High-quality learning environments are critical to support students’ learning and development. This study supported eight lead teachers of Starting Strong classrooms in four different early learning programs to try to improve teachers’ knowledge, self-efficacy, and use of Developmentally Appropriate Practices (DAP) within their classrooms. Four Starting Strong supports were evaluated during this research, including an asynchronous video series, coaching with use of the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) Report, and Community of Practice (CoP) meetings. The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scales, Third Edition (ECERS-3) was used to measure the overall quality of preschool classrooms before and after the intervention. Pre- and post-intervention surveys were also conducted to measure participants' knowledge and self-efficacy. While there was no change in participant knowledge of DAP or self-efficacy, there was significant improvement in the ECERS-3 scores from the Spring to the Fall assessment. All participants reported the four Starting Strong supports as being very useful and offered suggestions for improvements, explicitly suggesting consistency and shared learning experiences. Collectively, the Starting Strong supports helped the teachers apply their knowledge of developmentally appropriate practices in early childhood education in establishing quality preschool environments.

Students’ motivation is what helps them learn best and as a teacher, it is important to effectively use teaching strategies that enhance their students’ motivation. Strategies include establishing a connection with students that makes the class personal for them because this gives the students a safe space to learn and feel welcome. When students feel welcome and have a connection with their teacher, they are more likely to be excited to learn and their self-efficacy will increase. Their self-efficacy comes from their past experience in school and their level of confidence so ensuring that they are encouraged and have the confidence to learn helps them to be more open when encountering new concepts. Aside from creating a positive environment for students, teachers need to also teach their content in a way that increases their students’ motivation to learn. Establishing learning goals that connect to the students’ personal interests is one of the most effective ways to teach because the students are more likely to be interested in the content if they have a connection with it. Mathematics is a subject that becomes much more difficult to teach because of the bad reputation it receives. However, teachers can help their students learn more effectively and be excited to learn mathematical concepts by using a more conceptual approach. This includes utilizing discussions and visualizations to assist in teaching concepts. Both of these strategies help students understand the content at a deeper level which helps them in their future mathematical courses. Lastly, the student-teacher connection is very important, so the teacher should also establish a connection with their students’ parents. The parents should know about the class their child is taking and by creating this connection, students can learn more effectively.

The purpose of this action research study is to examine the effect of an innovation that includes staff coaching, curriculum adaptation, and researcher reflection on increasing staff effectiveness in supporting students with complex communication needs. This study included four participants (two special educators and two speech-language pathologists (SLPs) working in Preschool Special Education (PSE) classrooms within a public school district. The study was conducted while navigating a global pandemic and emergency remote learning. Through the use of curricular noticing and an approach inspired by a Technological Pedagogical and Content Knowledge Framework (TPACK) framework, an innovation of a staff coaching model combined with adapted curriculum resources was designed to support staff members using the Big Day for PreK curriculum. Analysis of the data indicates that supporting staff through staff coaching and adapted curriculum materials increased their use and own adaptation of the curriculum. In addition, providing a staff coach with the opportunity to document and reflect on experiences can increase the use of curricula and coaching effectiveness.

There are many benefits for children, teachers, families, and schools when partnerships are formed between families and teachers. However, many new teachers are entering the teaching profession not feeling confident about communicating and engaging with parents. This lack of confidence stems from some teacher preparation programs not including curriculum that explicitly addresses how to communicate and engage with parents. The focus of this study was to investigate the extent to which four Family Engagement Trainings affected preservice teachers during their student teaching practicum. A quasi-experimental approach using an explanatory sequential mixed method action research design was used to measure changes in preservice teachers’ knowledge, value, and self-efficacy regarding communicating and engaging with parents throughout the 19 weeks of the study. A survey instrument, personal meaning maps, and reflections were used to gather data. Results indicated the Family Engagement Trainings were effective in positively changing the preservice teachers’ knowledge, value, and self-efficacy to communicate and engage with families.

Media and technology are integral parts of today’s society. Unlike in the past, most adults in the United States now have access to the internet via their own personal devices. Technology’s popularity does not stop with adults. The children of this generation are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to media and technology and are exposed to it at a very young age. This paper analyzes the effect that this exposure is having on early childhood development. The research shows that there are several benefits to children using technology at a young age. Some of these benefits include increased learning opportunities, preparation for future careers, and support for children with disabilities. However, there are also several challenges that technology can cause. Some of these challenges include increased violence, exposure to inappropriate content, sleep issues, and an increased chance of obesity. In addition to this paper, a resource website titled Toddlers and Technology was created. The purpose of this website is to give parents insight into the information that is available in regards to technology and child development. The website includes the benefits and challenges of children using technology, recommendations on how parents can combat the challenges, and a list of 10 educational apps for early childhood development.

Undergraduate teacher preparation programs face scrutiny regarding pre-service teachers' preparation upon graduation. Specifically, scholars contend that teacher preparation programs do not adequately prepare pre-service teachers to plan for effective instruction. Situated in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University, this action research study used the Theory of Pedagogical Content Knowledge to examine (a) how pre-service teachers developed unit planning practices using the Backward Design framework and (b) the pedagogical teaching practices used as they implemented the unit plan in the classroom. During the student teaching course, pre-service teachers received instruction on how to use the Backward Design framework to plan a unit of instruction to implement in their placement classroom. Results from the mixed-methods study provided evidence that Backward Design was an effective way for pre-service teachers to plan instruction. Results from the study indicated that implementing and reflecting on lessons taught from the unit plan contributed to the pedagogical teaching practices used in the classroom. Furthermore, results demonstrated that designing, implementing, and reflecting on the unit plan contributed to a shift in how participants viewed themselves.
