This project challenges the prevailing weight-centric paradigm of present-day medicine which focuses on weight as a primary indicator of health. This study aimed to understand the impact of a brief pragmatic intervention to facilitate shifting healthcare providers' clinical conceptualization, attitudes, and practices from weight-centric to weight-inclusive care. A one-hour pragmatic training was composed and presented to providers at a community health clinic. The intervention highlighted the critical gap in our understanding of health and attempted to bring attention to the intricate web of factors that play into the complexity of weight. The education also provided specific tools that providers can put into practice to better cultivate weight-inclusive care. Mixed methods were used to evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of the intervention via changes in provider attitudes, treatment behaviors, and conceptualization of patient issues. Findings reveal modest differences from pre- to post-intervention as well as a notable disconnect among providers’ understanding and application of concepts. Participants expressed significant interest in the training and weight-inclusive care.

Examining Weight Stigma within Adolescent/Parent Dyads

Description
Weight stigma is a prevalent issue that has detrimental effects on health for both adolescents and parents. Adolescents are in a formative stage of life, so it is important to understand how parents may impact adolescents’ own experience with weight

Weight stigma is a prevalent issue that has detrimental effects on health for both adolescents and parents. Adolescents are in a formative stage of life, so it is important to understand how parents may impact adolescents’ own experience with weight stigma. Past research has examined adolescent coping, body image, and associated stigma in the context of the parent-child relationship. This cross-sectional study examined self-reported weight stigma experience and internalization within 42 parent/adolescent dyads to provide greater understanding of how adolescents and parents are experiencing and internalizing weight stigma independently and transversely.

The integration of behavioral health services into primary care in a rapidly evolving innovation that has shown potential to improve access to care, health outcomes, and lower health costs. In an effort to reform healthcare system, integrating behavioral health services become a vital part of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH). As research and developments in integration continue to evolve, there is a need to identify consistencies, discrepancies, and gaps in the field to inform the best ways to move forward. This study is a systematic review seeking to identify trends, gaps, and future directions of research in integrated behavioral health in primary care. Using Google Scholar 171 papers were included, 95 being original research and 76 being reviews, commentary, and editorials. From the results, it is clear that the case for integration has been made, and now it is time to move to the specifics. Both empirical and theoretical evidence supports the benefits of integration to patients and health systems. However, there is a lack of literature that tackles problems that hinder or facilitate integration in independent clinics with unique characteristics. Most notably, specific interventions that are effective and appropriate in primary care, payment reforms that are feasible and sustainable, and the effect of integration on health disparities.
