Falls are a leading cause of disability in the older population. In hospitalized patients, falls account for approximately 11,000 annual deaths in the U.S. (JCO, 2014). Falls can occur for a complexity of reasons. Orthostatic hypotension (OH), the change of blood pressure with position changes, is common amongst the elderly. Some believe that because of orthostatic symptoms, such as dizziness, change in vision, and vertigo, a patient is at higher risk for falling. However, the actual relationship of orthostatic hypotension to falls is uncertain.
