Purpose: The COVID-19 pandemic has increased depression among the population. Exercise is a useful coping mechanism for depression and high intensity interval training (HIIT) can be utilized. Background: A community exercise facility provides HIIT exercises for gym members. The gym owner believed their HIIT program is a great tool for coping with depression. Methods: The gym offered a 21-day free HIIT program. Those who signed up for the program, 18 years of age or older, and were able to exercise under the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire were offered to participate in the study. Participants were given a pre-survey before they started exercises. This survey utilized the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), a standard depression rating tool that determines depression symptom prevalence. After the 21-day program, participants were given a post-survey involving the same PHQ-9. The survey scores were compared pre- to post-program. The surveys were coded to exclude any identifying information. Results: Mean PHQ-9 pre-test was 7.67, mean score post-test was 3. A paired t-Test resulted in a p=0.60, showed that it was not statistically significant. Discussion: The goal of this study was to determine if HIIT training was an effective coping mechanism for depression. The data shows that participants had decreased PHQ-9 scores from the pre- and post-program surveys showing a clinical significance. This data can be used to provide those suffering from depression a coping mechanism.

Purpose & Background: This project evaluates the impact of education on a provider’s intent to screen for vitamin D deficiency in adults with depression. An internal Quality Improvement (QI) study at a local mental health primary care clinic revealed that only 1 in 3 patients with depression were routinely screened for vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is a crucial component of numerous systemic functions, including mental health, specifically depression. Methods: This QI project used the Rosswurm and Larrabee Model implementation framework. Institution Review Board (IRB) expedited review approval was received. This project was conducted at 10 Veteran’s Affairs (VA) primary care clinics in Arizona. An initial email with a recruitment flyer was sent to providers to launch the project. A second email was sent to participants who volunteered to participate in the project, with instructions and links to the asynchronous pre-survey, recorded education PowerPoint, and post-survey. Responses were analyzed using Intellectus Statistics software. Results: Provider knowledge of impact and intent to screen for vitamin D deficiency increased after viewing a brief education video (n=30). Frequency distribution analyses revealed a 23% average increase in agreement to screen for vitamin D deficiency at annual visits, “at-risk” individuals, knowledge of the association, and intent to screen regularly in depression. Conclusion: The education intervention was found to positively impact the provider’s intent and demonstrate the importance of screening for vitamin D deficiency in adults with depression.

Traditional medications to treat the disorder demonstrate modest efficacy while best outcomes are seen when psychotherapy is implemented adjunctively. Barriers to delivering optimal treatment can lead to relapse, diminished psychosocial functioning, and suicide, a leading cause of death in the United States. The purpose of this paper is to examine the rapid antidepressant effects of ketamine combined with nurse-delivered mindfulness-based cognitive therapy to help reduce depression severity and support remission. Research differentiating ketamine’s mechanism of action from traditional anti-depressants and the efficacy of mindfulness-based interventions to reduce depression, have led this evidence-based project integrating these modalities.

Objective: Pediatric patients with asthma are frequently cared for in the emergency department (ED). Many studies show early administration of corticosteroids (CS) can improve outcomes for children experiencing an asthma exacerbation. Despite the evidence, delays in care remain. The purpose of this study is to streamline the process for nurse-initiated, triage-based CS administration and determine the effect on overall length of stay (LOS). Methods: For this quality improvement initiative, ED nurses at a large, freestanding, children’s emergency department in the southwestern United States were given education on inclusion and exclusion criteria for nurse-initiated CS in ED triage. Time to CS administration, LOS, and whether the ED nurse or provider ordered the CS were evaluated through chart reviews of patients presenting with a chief complaint of difficulty breathing. These metrics were compared to charts from the previous year during the same timeframe to evaluate for improved timeliness of CS delivery. Results: Time to CS administration decreased from a mean of 98.6 minutes to 57.6 minutes. LOS decreased from an average of 259.3 minutes to 169.6 minutes. The effect of timely CS on LOS was significant for December p =.003, January p =.002, and February p = <.001. Conclusion: A streamlined process for CS delivery to pediatric patients experiencing an asthma exacerbation can enable providers to achieve efficient and effective care in the ED and decrease a patient’s overall LOS.

Background: Around 40-50% of people with Parkinson’s disease will develop anxiety or depression, the number one factors affecting their quality of life. Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most well-established intervention for anxiety and depression in people with Parkinson’s disease. Purpose: The project addresses a southwestern Parkinson-specific community center’s need for mental health by incorporating a cognitive behavioral therapy-based mental health program, guided by the Cognitive Behavioral Model. Methods: Recruitment at the center took place during a virtual weekly meeting with inclusion criteria of a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis, 50 years or older, and English speaking. A four-week, virtual, nurse-led cognitive behavioral therapy-based mental health program was created to examine the effects on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in ten people with Parkinson’s disease. Pre-and post-intervention Geriatric Anxiety Inventory (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.91), Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.87), and Parkinson’s Disease Questionnaires (Cronbach’s alpha, 0.84) were used to assess anxiety, depression, and quality of life. Results: Using a Two-tailed paired samples t-Test, mean values and p-value were calculated with alpha value of 0.05, t(39) = -0.10, p = .922 for anxiety, Alpha value of 0.05, t(16)=3.69, p=0.002 for depression, Alpha value of 0.05, t(38)=5.07, p<0.001 for quality of life, and Alpha value of 0.05, t(5)=4.54, p=0.006 for emotional wellbeing. Conclusion: A cognitive behavioral therapy-based mental health program at a Parkinson-specific center has the potential to improve quality of life and decrease depression in people with Parkinson’s disease. Implications: Research with larger sample sizes, longer duration of therapy, and in-person format would be beneficial.

Objective: Nearly 90% of sex trafficking victims will come into contact with an emergency department healthcare provider during his or her period of exploitation. Yet, victim identification by healthcare providers remains inadequate. The purpose of this quality improvement project is to improve emergency department healthcare providers’ confidence and ability to identify sex trafficking victims through staff education centered around sex trafficking. Method: A quality improvement project, guided by the Social Cognitive Theory, was implemented in an Arizona emergency department. ED staff were provided with a 40-minute education video about sex trafficking, including victim identification and appropriate responses. Participation in this project was open to all current healthcare workers employed at this emergency department. Stakeholders within the facility assisted with recruitment via weekly staff emails over a three-week period. A pre- and post-survey, consisting of a self-evaluation Likert scale, was used to assess confidence in identifying victims. Case studies were included to measure the participants’ ability to identify victims of trafficking. All aspects of this project were approved by Arizona State University’s and the organization’s Institutional Review Board. Results: One hundred percent of staff agreed to feeling confident in their ability to identify sex trafficking victims post intervention. However, there was no improvement in staff’s actual ability to identify victims through case studies post intervention. Conclusions: Education can be a valuable tool to improve confidence in identifying victims of sex trafficking in an emergency setting.

The electric transportation (ET) and electric vehicle (EV) landscape is currently inequitable and inaccessible for many living in the Phoenix area. This is especially true for people without single-occupancy vehicles (SOVs), who are reliant on public transit, or do not live in the Metropolitan center. Transit is intricately related to the environment and, due to societal and political structures, most of these environmental injustices are concentrated in low-income and minority communities. The lack of political representation within these communities has led to increased exposure to a variety of issues. Equitable transportation has also suffered due to a significant gap in addressing the needs of these underserved communities (Bolin, et al., 2005). The concentration of inequities and environmental injustices is a direct result of the lack of representation. Therefore, equitable and inclusive collaboration on solutions is required in order to maintain fairness and access, (Clement, 2020) considering the legacy of institutional harm within historically marginalized communities. The TE Activator was created by Salt River Project (SRP) and Anthesis Group, a sustainability consulting agency. The Activator is a group of Phoenix-area organizations interested in shaping the ET landscape to positively influence the well-being of Arizonans. With this in mind, they have asked our team to focus on making the transition to electric transportation equitable and inclusive. Our report details the current state of electric transportation nationally and locally, analyzes equitable EV/ET programs and utility plans across the country, and reviews the City of Tempe’s electric transportation related efforts. For this, we conducted listening sessions with a national expert, the City of Tempe, Tempe Community Action Agency, and CHISPA, creating a Community Listening Pilot Project based on the preliminary listening sessions. Through our research, listening, and discussions we compiled tiered recommendations for the TE Activator that suggest systemic policy changes based on community priorities. Accompanying the report is an Equity Roadmap, Community Listening Script, and one-page Debrief.
