In 2012, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy's "came out" about his anti-same sex marriage views, launching an enormous negative backlash across social media networks. To counteract this, former governor Mike Huckabee called on his Facebook fans to support the company on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," both on Facebook and in person. The project examines both the backlash and Appreciation Day on social media networks. Posts on the Appreciation Day Facebook event page and similar posts on Twitter were first broken down in the framework of supportive and oppositional posts and then analyzed in further contexts. Comments on official Chick-fil-A Facebook statuses were then examined in a similar fashion. The research concludes that a strong support system both online and offline were necessary for Chick-fil-A to recover from its backlash. The controversy that ensued is ultimately a case study in the growing influence of Facebook as a tool for small-scale activism.

Highly publicized cases involving citizen fatalities due to police use of force raise questions about perceptions of danger. Arrest-related deaths due to weapons, accidental injuries, and natural causes remain high year after year. Communities are greatly affected, and mistrust with the police continues to increase when these situations happen. There seem to be inaccurate perceptions that may stem from implicit associations, stereotypes, and social learning. These psychological concepts may provide theoretical explanations of how decisions are made when police officers are faced with danger. Some elements of this decision-making process may include suspect characteristics, officer experience, and police sub-culture. In this review, race/ethnicity and socio-economic status are examined as factors that contribute to police use of force. Disparities in use of force data often involve young, Black males living in low-income neighborhoods. The stereotype that this group is more dangerous than others stems from underlying prejudices and previous situations where Black people are targeted more in certain areas. Training, education, and community outreach programs can assist in mending relations between police and affected communities. Acknowledging these inaccurate perceptions, making the adjustments to police training and community relations, and being open to exploration in future research of other minority groups will assist in eliminating prejudices and creating better connections between law enforcement and the community.

The purpose of this project was to evaluate possible adjudicative causes of wrongful convictions, which were strictly defined as cases where a defendant is convicted for a crime in which they are factually innocent. Most of the existing research on the causes of wrongful convictions suggests that errors occur during the investigative process. However, there is little to no research on how the court system, whose purpose is to catch and correct these mistakes prior to sentencing, fails to do just that. As such, a few possible adjudicative causes were proposed based on existing literature: errors in expert witness testimony, prosecutorial misconduct, representation by the defense, and race. Interview questions were generated based on each of these topics. Four attorneys \u2014 two prosecutors, one public defender, and one private defense attorney \u2014 were interviewed with these questions in order to qualitatively evaluate the legitimacy and the accuracy of these proposed adjudicative causes. The results indicated that attorneys rely on (and believe that jurors rely heavily on) an expert witness' performance rather than their statements and that race does not play a role in the likelihood that a defendant will be wrongfully convicted. Likewise, all four attorneys indicated that both prosecutors and defense attorneys are eager to pursue justice and that no one person is to blame for a wrongful conviction. In conclusion, errors made in the adjudicative process that lead to wrongful convictions might simply be the cause of human error.

This study was conducted to determine the difference in compressive strength between decayed and healthy teeth. The teeth were subjected to a compressive force to simulate the process of mastication. This was done to show that healthy teeth would be better at handling these compressive forces since they have more enamel. 26 teeth samples were collected (19 molars, 4 canines, and 3 premolars) evenly distributed between healthy and decayed. The samples were dimensionally analyzed using electronic calipers and then categorized as either decayed or healthy. The samples were then placed in a nut bolt with epoxy so that the samples could be compressed. Each sample was recorded on video while they were being exposed to the compressive force. This was done to observe how the samples were coming in contact with the Shimadzu compression machine. The amount of force that was required for the samples to exhibit the first point of breakage was recorded by the machine in pounds of force. Various analyses were conducted to determine relationships between several variables. The results showed that as the total and occlusal surface area increased, so did the amount of force the samples could absorb before breakage. As the machine came in contact with more cusps among the molar samples, those samples were able to absorb a larger compressive force. The average force that the decayed and healthy molar samples endured before breakage was roughly even, with the decayed samples average being slightly greater.

Stress is a necessary and functional part of human physiology. From responding to life-threatening situations to getting people out of bed in the morning, stress serves a major purpose in human survival. However, when consistent and high levels of stress are experienced, it can pose a threat to human health.

Stress is a necessary and functional part of human physiology. From responding to life-threatening situations to getting people out of bed in the morning, stress serves a major purpose in human survival. However, when consistent and high levels of stress are experienced, it can pose a threat to human health. One of the major mediators of physiological stress is a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol is a well-defined substance and its function in normal physiology is well understood. Scientific research indicates that consistent and high levels of this hormone may be an aid in cancer’s ability to evade the human immune response. Despite this, there is not much known about its relationship with cancer. I used immunofluorescence to determine cell-to-cell variability of vimentin expression and DNA content for cells that were exposed to cortisol at consistent and frequent doses overtime and those not exposed to cortisol to determine if cortisol altered the variability of vimentin expression and DNA content. I observed no change in the variability in vimentin expression across both cell conditions. I did observe variability in DNA content across both cell conditions, with more variability in the population affected by cortisol. These results suggest that there might be a relationship between the stress induced by cortisol, taking place at the genomic level but may have no impact on specific protein expression. Potential implications of the research conducted are looks to preventative medicine in the context of stress experienced by members of marginalized groups as a way of preventing cancer development.

Homeless populations are often disproportionately impacted by several diseases due to factors such as overcrowding, unsanitary conditions, lack of access to healthcare and most importantly lack of education. The purpose of this project was to decrease a part of this health gap by spreading awareness of certain illnesses impacting Arizona’s homeless population and to increase the use plausible prevention methods. This was done through the creation of three simplified brochures that contained information regarding influenza, hepatitis, and schizophrenia. Two surveys were distributed to a local homeless population; the first survey was given prior to handing out the brochures and the second survey was given a week later after the participants had some time to read the information from the brochures. The data from the surveys supported the goal of the project by showing an increase in overall awareness of the diseases as well as an increase in behavioral changes that would lead to the increase of plausible prevention methods.

This thesis seeks to understand how the film Legally Blonde has portrayed the interaction between femininity and women. Specifically, this paper will consider how feminism—defined through the context of the era and Legally Blonde—has empowered women to enter male-dominated professional workspaces—specifically in consideration of the legal profession. The feminism presented in Legally Blonde can be characterized through Elle Wood’s simultaneous displays of intelligence and focus on typical feminine interests: such as marriage, cosmetics, and the like (Marsh, 2005; Lucia, 2005; Hoffman-Longtin & Feldner, 2016). The “third-wave” feminist era surrounding Legally Blonde promotes the duality of women in expressing femininity and holding agentic capability (Dole, 2008). This thesis uses the film’s definition of feminism to consider the changes in women entering the legal profession, the identity of women who connect to the film, and the media’s responses and portrayal of the film. Legally Blonde defines feminism by presenting women as both intelligent and typically feminine—challenging the typical gender role of women in society with her expression of capability and seriousness. While the film elucidates a definition of feminism based on femininity and female agency, some women may not fit into this definition based on the lack of consideration of intersectionality in the film. While the film underlines a changing shift in acceptance of women’s expression of femininity, the film’s message may not apply to all women. Yet, Elle Woods remains a role model for many women to attend law school and her impact is emphasized in popular culture even today.

Exposure of harmful ultraviolet rays (UV) is a great concern in many locations around the world, as skin diseases and cancer continue to surge. With the number of skin cancer skyrocketing past all the types of known cancers, a vast majority of cases are reported daily. When the skin is exposed to UVA or UVB radiation, primarily from the sun, the UV radiation damages the DNA within the cells, which results in skin cancer. However, most damaged DNA of cells can undergo nucleotide excision repair. This involves a nuclease molecule that cuts the damaged bases. Preliminary research has developed other ways of repairing DNA damage in cells by implementing organic compounds. An organic chemical such as, ferulic acid has the ability to aid the mechanisms involved in nucleotide excision repair that takes place in your cells after DNA damage.

To test this, Saccharomyces cerevisiae was utilized. This is a primary model used in most medicinal studies due to the resemblance to human cells. This study evaluates the effect of ferulic acid, concentrations on ultraviolet radiated Rad 1 (mutant) and HB0 (wild type) yeast cells. The yeast strains were grown in two different concentrations for ferulic acid and treated with long-wave UV light under 30 seconds, 45 seconds, and 60 seconds. It is observed that, Rad 1 had heavier growth in the presence of high concentration of ferulic acid after UV treatment than HB0. But, HB0 yeast had heavier growth in the presence of lower concentrations of ferulic acid after UV treatment. Ferulic acid concentrations of 1 mM can influence cell repair after UV application by mRNA expression during nucleotide excision repair and higher absorption of UV.
