In nearly all commercially successful internal combustion engine applications, the slider crank mechanism is used to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into rotary motion. The hypocycloid mechanism, wherein the crankshaft is replaced with a novel gearing arrangement, is a viable alternative to the slider crank mechanism. The geared hypocycloid mechanism allows for linear motion of the connecting rod and provides a method for perfect balance with any number of cylinders including single cylinder applications. A variety of hypocycloid engine designs and research efforts have been undertaken and produced successful running prototypes. Wiseman Technologies, Inc provided one of these prototypes to this research effort. This two-cycle 30cc half crank hypocycloid engine has shown promise in several performance categories including balance and efficiency. To further investigate its potential a more thorough and scientific analysis was necessary and completed in this research effort. The major objective of the research effort was to critically evaluate and optimize the Wiseman prototype for maximum performance in balance, efficiency, and power output. A nearly identical slider crank engine was used extensively to establish baseline performance data and make comparisons. Specialized equipment and methods were designed and built to collect experimental data on both engines. Simulation and mathematical models validated by experimental data collection were used to better quantify performance improvements. Modifications to the Wiseman prototype engine improved balance by 20 to 50% (depending on direction) and increased peak power output by 24%.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is currently a leading and growing field of researchwithin the biomedical industry. With its primary use in pulse oximetry and capability of quickly, non-intrusively, evaluating essential vital signs like heart rate and oxygen levels. This thesis will explore the literature on new and innovative research in pulse oximetry. Then introduce PPG signals including how to calculate heart rate, oxygen saturation, and current problems, mainly focused on motion artifacts. The development of hardware and software systems using Bluetooth to transmit data to MATLAB for algorithm processing. Testing different signal processing techniques and parameters evaluating their effects on algorithm accuracy and reduction of motion artifact. Using accelerometers to identify motion and apply filters to effectively reduce minor motion artifacts. Then perform real-time data analysis and algorithm processing resulting in heart rate and oxygen level calculations.

While pulse oximeter technology is not necessarily an area of new technology, advancements in performance and package of pulse sensors have been opening up the opportunities to use these sensors in locations other than the traditional finger monitoring location. This research report examines the full potential of creating a minimally invasive physiological and environmental observance method from the ear location. With the use of a pulse oximeter and accelerometer located within the ear, there is the opportunity to provide a more in-depth means to monitor a pilot for a Gravity-Induced Loss of Consciousness (GLOC) scenario while not adding any new restriction to the pilot's movement while in flight. Additionally, building from the GLOC scenario system, other safety monitoring systems for military and first responders are explored by alternating the physiological and environmental sensors. This work presents the design and development of hardware, signal processing algorithms, prototype development, and testing results of an in-ear wearable physiological sensor.

Photoplethysmography (PPG) is a noninvasive optical signal that measures the change in blood volume. This particular signal can be interpreted to yield heart rate (HR) information which is commonly used in medical settings and diagnostics through wearable devices. The noninvasive nature of the measurement of the signal however causes it to be susceptible to noise sources such as motion artifacts (MA). This research starts by describing an end-to-end embedded HR estimation system that leverages noisy PPG and accelerometer data through machine learning (ML) to estimate HR. Through embedded ML for HR estimation, the limitations and challenges are highlighted, and a different HR estimation method is proposed. Next, a point-based value iteration (PBVI) framework is proposed to optimally select HR estimation filters based on the observed user activity. Lastly, the underlying dynamics of the PPG are explored in order to create a sparse dynamic expression of the PPG signal, which can be used to simulate PPG data to improve ML or remove MA from PPG.

The slider-crank mechanism is popularly used in internal combustion engines to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston into a rotary motion. This research discusses an alternate mechanism proposed by the Wiseman Technology Inc. which involves replacing the crankshaft with a hypocycloid gear assembly. The unique hypocycloid gear arrangement allows the piston and the connecting rod to move in a straight line, creating a perfect sinusoidal motion. To analyze the performance advantages of the Wiseman mechanism, engine simulation software was used. The Wiseman engine with the hypocycloid piston motion was modeled in the software and the engine's simulated output results were compared to those with a conventional engine of the same size. The software was also used to analyze the multi-fuel capabilities of the Wiseman engine using a contra piston. The engine's performance was studied while operating on diesel, ethanol and gasoline fuel. Further, a scaling analysis on the future Wiseman engine prototypes was carried out to understand how the performance of the engine is affected by increasing the output power and cylinder displacement. It was found that the existing Wiseman engine produced about 7% less power at peak speeds compared to the slider-crank engine of the same size. It also produced lower torque and was about 6% less fuel efficient than the slider-crank engine. These results were concurrent with the dynamometer tests performed in the past. The 4 stroke diesel variant of the same Wiseman engine performed better than the 2 stroke gasoline version as well as the slider-crank engine in all aspects. The Wiseman engine using contra piston showed poor fuel efficiency while operating on E85 fuel. But it produced higher torque and about 1.4% more power than while running on gasoline. While analyzing the effects of the engine size on the Wiseman prototypes, it was found that the engines performed better in terms of power, torque, fuel efficiency and cylinder BMEP as their displacements increased. The 30 horsepower (HP) prototype, while operating on E85, produced the most optimum results in all aspects and the diesel variant of the same engine proved to be the most fuel efficient.

About 20-50% of industrial processes energy is lost as waste heat in their operations. The thermal hydraulic engine relies on the thermodynamic properties of supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) to efficiently perform work. Carbon dioxide possesses great properties that makes it a safe working fluid for the engine’s applications. This research aims to preliminarily investigate the actual efficiency which can be obtained through experimental data and compare that to the Carnot or theoretical maximum efficiency. The actual efficiency is investigated through three approaches. However, only the efficiency results from the second method are validated since the other approaches are based on a complete actual cycle which was not achieved for the engine. The efficiency of the thermal hydraulic engine is found to be in the range of 0.5% to 2.2% based on the second method which relies on the boundary work by the piston. The heating and cooling phases of the engine’s operation are viewed on both the T-s (temperature-entropy) and p-v (pressure-volume) diagrams. The Carnot efficiency is also found to be 13.7% from a temperature difference of 46.20C based on the measured experimental data. It is recommended that the thermodynamic cycle and efficiency investigation be repeated using an improved heat exchanger design to reduce energy losses and gains during both the heating and cooling phases. The temperature of CO2 can be measured through direct contact with the thermocouple and pressure measurements can be improved using a digital pressure transducer for the thermodynamic cycle investigation.
