Chronic stress is a risk factor for many diseases that impact the brain, including Alzheimer’s Disease. Unlike acute stress, chronic stress reduces neuronal plasticity, which can lead to neuronal remodeling and suppression. This project investigates the effect of stress on the dendritic complexity of hippocampal neurons in rats, demonstrating a methodology for procuring and analyzing these neurons. The brains of the 160 rats from the Sustained Threat and Timing (STAT) experiment were frozen. The STAT experiment investigated the effect chronic variable stress had on prospective and retrospective timing in rodents. Using a cryostat, thin coronal slices of brain tissue were placed on microscopic slides. The tissue samples were then stained using the Golgi method of silver staining. Hippocampal neurons were assessed using Sholl Analysis; the dendritic complexity of these neurons was quantified. The method of using Sholl Analysis was found to be an effective process in measuring dendritic length of hippocampal neurons.

“Tell It to the Frogs: Fukushima’s nuclear disaster and its impact on the Japanese Tree Frog” is a representation of the work from Giraudeau et. al’s “Carotenoid distribution in wild Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica) exposed to ionizing radiation in Fukushima.” This paper looked to see if carotenoid levels in

“Tell It to the Frogs: Fukushima’s nuclear disaster and its impact on the Japanese Tree Frog” is a representation of the work from Giraudeau et. al’s “Carotenoid distribution in wild Japanese tree frogs (Hyla japonica) exposed to ionizing radiation in Fukushima.” This paper looked to see if carotenoid levels in the tree frog’s vocal sac, liver, and blood were affected by radiation from Fukushima’s power plant explosion. Without carotenoids, the pigment that gives the frogs their orange color on their necks, their courtship practices would be impacted and would not be as able to show off their fitness to potential mates. The artwork inspired by this research displayed the tree frog’s degradation over time due to radiation, starting with normal life and ending with their death and open on the table. The sculptures also pinpoint where the carotenoids were being measured with a brilliant orange glaze. Through ceramic hand building, the artist created larger than life frogs in hopes to elicit curiosity about them and their plight. While the paper did not conclude any changes in the frog’s physiology after 18 months of exposure, there are still questions that are left unanswered. Why did these frogs not have any reaction? Could there be any effects after more time has passed? Is radiation leakage as big of a problem as previously thought? The only way to get the answers to these questions is to be aware of these amphibians, the circumstances that led them to be involved, and continued research on them and radiation.

With the Latinx community anticipated to make up ~30% of the population by 2060, it will be crucial more than ever to mitigate the health disparities preventing them from equitable well-being. From a higher prevalence of obesity to better understanding mental health, there exists a myriad of challenges imposed against the community; however, its largest barrier is American hegemony. This is because their biases have exacerbated the public health system, preventing one from accessing their right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. As a result, intervention goals, most commonly through educational settings, fail to be met. One of the worst results: poor health literacy rates. Without proper health literacy skills, individuals lack the knowledge required to best manage their health. Unfortunately, the Latinx community is reported to have fewer strengths in terms of this; hence, Sana Sana was created. Through this magazine, the project intends to increase general healthy literacy, improve health trajectories, and promote overall well-being amongst Latino adolescents.

Samantha and Rachel both have a history in gifted education and wanted to create a safe space for the two of them and their peers to discuss the effects gifted/ accelerated education has had on them, specifically pertaining to burnout. To best dive into this matter, Gifted Kid Syndrome podcast was born! During which, our hosts interviewed students and professionals, allowing everyone to share their pasts, their hopes for the future, and what they’ve learned along the way regarding mental health, identity, education, and personal success.

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease characterized primarily by physical impairments such as tremors, poor balance, and bradykinesia; however, some individuals with PD will additionally experience numerous nonmotor symptoms such as dementia, depression, and sleep disturbances amongst various other life-altering ailments. Two of the key pathological hallmarks of

Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease characterized primarily by physical impairments such as tremors, poor balance, and bradykinesia; however, some individuals with PD will additionally experience numerous nonmotor symptoms such as dementia, depression, and sleep disturbances amongst various other life-altering ailments. Two of the key pathological hallmarks of PD include the death of melanated dopaminergic neurons in the nigrostriatal pathway and the accumulation of Lewy bodies, which are primarily composed of aggregates of the protein α-synuclein (α-syn). Interestingly, members of the chitinase protein family, namely chitinase-3-like protein-1 (L1), have heightened concentrations in a number of neurodegenerative diseases other than PD. To investigate the specific role L1 plays in PD etiology, we evaluated if astrocytic L1 expression was elevated in postmortem brain tissue of PD patients as well as in an α-syn overexpression rat model, and further tested if manipulating astrocytic-specific L1 expression correlated with neuroinflammation and nigral neuronal degeneration in the model. Preliminary histological analysis has shown increased levels of L1 expression in the α-syn model before neuronal loss occurs, and in human tissue, L1 was found to be significantly increased in the postmortem tissue of individuals with PD versus non-diseased controls. Investigations in identifying an astrocytic-specific virus capsid and manipulating L1 expression in the α-syn model are ongoing. This preliminary data thus far supports that increased astrocytic expression of L1 is associated with PD pathology.

This project was an exploratory take on outreach in the life sciences - looking into the existing literature and practices and formulating a proof of concept for future outreach with synthesizes my findings. The research culminated in the creation of an insect guide for the novice observer, which reads as a modern take on the dichotomous key and allows amateur insect observers to develop some skills of identification with relatively little entomological knowledge.
