As the sports and entertainment industry shifts toward sustainable operations, State Farm Stadium (SFS), owned by the Arizona Sports and Tourism Authority and operated by Legends Global, seeks to transition from internal back-of-house efficiency to public-facing leadership. Despite established internal waste-sorting and employee training protocols, a significant communication gap exists, resulting in high volumes of preventable landfill waste from over 1.2 million annual guests.
To bridge this gap, the Green Zone Game Changers, a Capstone team from Arizona State University’s Master of Sustainability Solutions (MSUS) program, developed a strategic framework to transform passive spectators into active sustainability participants.
Methodology
The project employed a multi-method approach to identify barriers and opportunities:
Data Collection: Conducted a stadium site audit, collaborated with the Sustainable Stadium Alliance, and surveyed 206 eventgoers to gauge sustainability perceptions and behaviors.
Analysis: Performed a Landscape Analysis of NFL peer venues (e.g., Lumen Field, Levi’s Stadium) and a SWOT Analysis to identify scalable best practices, such as "gamified" challenges and dedicated sustainability teams.
Deliverables
The team produced three actionable toolkits designed for immediate and scalable implementation:
Fan Engagement Plan (FEP): A roadmap for consistent digital and physical messaging across social media, the SFS mobile app, and updated stadium signage.
Green Game Guide (GGG): An internal operational resource for staff to pilot "Green Games," featuring waste-sorting protocols, gameday timelines, and performance metrics.
Sustainability Activation Ideas (SAI): Ten interactive fan experiences, including a volunteer "Green Team," a Greenest Tailgate Contest, and a Spin-to-Win Recycling Wheel, designed to make environmental stewardship a memorable part of the fan experience.
By translating complex internal operations into compelling storytelling and interactive touchpoints, these deliverables provide Legends Global with a pathway to improve waste diversion and brand reputation. This project reframes the "wicked problem" of stadium waste as an opportunity for climate action, positioning SFS as a premier leader in the sustainable sports landscape.
