Network-on-Chip (NoC) architectures have emerged as the solution to the on-chip communication challenges of multi-core embedded processor architectures. Design space exploration and performance evaluation of a NoC design requires fast simulation infrastructure. Simulation of register transfer level model of NoC is too slow for any meaningful design space exploration. One of the solutions to reduce the speed of simulation is to increase the level of abstraction. SystemC TLM2.0 provides the capability to model hardware design at higher levels of abstraction with trade-off of simulation speed and accuracy. In this thesis, SystemC TLM2.0 models of NoC routers are developed at three levels of abstraction namely loosely-timed, approximately-timed, and cycle accurate. Simulation speed and accuracy of these three models are evaluated by a case study of a 4x4 mesh NoC.

The use of energy-harvesting in a wireless sensor network (WSN) is essential for situations where it is either difficult or not cost effective to access the network's nodes to replace the batteries. In this paper, the problems involved in controlling an active sensor network that is powered both by batteries and solar energy are investigated. The objective is to develop control strategies to maximize the quality of coverage (QoC), which is defined as the minimum number of targets that must be covered and reported over a 24 hour period. Assuming a time varying solar profile, the problem is to optimally control the sensing range of each sensor so as to maximize the QoC while maintaining connectivity throughout the network. Implicit in the solution is the dynamic allocation of solar energy during the day to sensing and to recharging the battery so that a minimum coverage is guaranteed even during the night, when only the batteries can supply energy to the sensors. This problem turns out to be a non-linear optimal control problem of high complexity. Based on novel and useful observations, a method is presented to solve it as a series of quasiconvex (unimodal) optimization problems which not only ensures a maximum QoC, but also maintains connectivity throughout the network. The runtime of the proposed solution is 60X less than a naive but optimal method which is based on dynamic programming, while the peak error of the solution is less than 8%. Unlike the dynamic programming method, the proposed method is scalable to large networks consisting of hundreds of sensors and targets. The solution method enables a designer to explore the optimal configuration of network design. This paper offers many insights in the design of energy-harvesting networks, which result in minimum network setup cost through determination of optimal configuration of number of sensors, sensing beam width, and the sampling time.

Error correcting systems have put increasing demands on system designers, both due to increasing error correcting requirements and higher throughput targets. These requirements have led to greater silicon area, power consumption and have forced system designers to make trade-offs in Error Correcting Code (ECC) functionality. Solutions to increase the efficiency of ECC systems are very important to system designers and have become a heavily researched area.

Many such systems incorporate the Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) method of error correcting in a multi-channel configuration. BCH is a commonly used code because of its configurability, low storage overhead, and low decoding requirements when compared to other codes. Multi-channel configurations are popular with system designers because they offer a straightforward way to increase bandwidth. The ECC hardware is duplicated for each channel and the throughput increases linearly with the number of channels. The combination of these two technologies provides a configurable and high throughput ECC architecture.

This research proposes a new method to optimize a BCH error correction decoder in multi-channel configurations. In this thesis, I examine how error frequency effects the utilization of BCH hardware. Rather than implement each decoder as a single pipeline of independent decoding stages, the channels are considered together and served by a pool of decoding stages. Modified hardware blocks for handling common cases are included and the pool is sized based on an acceptable, but negligible decrease in performance.

At modern-day intersections, traffic lights and stop signs assist human drivers to cross the intersection safely. Traffic congestion in urban road networks is a costly problem that affects all major cities. Efficiently operating intersections is largely dependent on accuracy and precision of human drivers, engendering a lingering uncertainty of attaining safety and high throughput. To improve the efficiency of the existing traffic network and mitigate the effects of human error in the intersection, many studies have proposed autonomous, intelligent transportation systems. These studies often involve utilizing connected autonomous vehicles, implementing a supervisory system, or both. Implementing a supervisory system is relatively more popular due to the security concerns of vehicle-to-vehicle communication. Even though supervisory systems are a step in the right direction for security, many supervisory systems’ safe operation solely relies on the promise of connected data being correct, making system reliability difficult to achieve. To increase fault-tolerance and decrease the effects of position uncertainty, this thesis proposes the Reliable and Robust Intersection Manager, a supervisory system that uses a separate surveillance system to dependably detect vehicles present in the intersection in order to create data redundancy for more accurate scheduling of connected autonomous vehicles. Adding the Surveillance System ensures that the temporal safety buffers between arrival times of connected autonomous vehicles are maintained. This guarantees that connected autonomous vehicles can traverse the intersection safely in the event of large vehicle controller error, a single rogue car entering the intersection, or a sybil attack. To test the proposed system given these fault-models, MATLAB® was used to create simulations in order to observe the functionality of R2IM compared to the state-of-the-art supervisory system, Robust Intersection Manager. Though R2IM is less efficient than the Robust Intersection Manager, it considers more fault models. The Robust Intersection Manager failed to maintain safety in the event of large vehicle controller errors and rogue cars, however R2IM resulted in zero collisions.

In the recent times, traffic congestion and motor accidents have been a major problem for transportation in major cities. Intelligent Transportation Systems has the potential to be an effective solution in order to tackle this issue. Connected Autonomous Vehicles can cooperate at intersections, ramp merging, lane change and other conflicting scenarios in order to resolve the conflicts and avoid collisions with other vehicles. A lot of works has been proposed for specific scenarios such as intersections, ramp merging or lane change which partially solve the conflict resolution problem. Also, one of the major issues in autonomous decision making - deadlocks have not been considered in some of the works. The existing works either do not consider deadlocks or lack a safety proof. This thesis proposes a cooperative driving solution that provides a complete navigation, conflict resolution and deadlock resolution for connected autonomous vehicles. A graph-based model is used to resolve the deadlocks between vehicles and the responsibility sensitive safety (RSS) rules have been used in order to ensure safety of the autonomous vehicles during conflict detection and resolution. This algorithm provides a complete navigation solution for an autonomous vehicle from its source to destination. The algorithm ensures that accidents do not occur even in the worst-case scenario and the decision making is deadlock free.
