Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

We spent the past two semesters interviewing, surveying, and researching the fitness industry to design an fitness app that would be popular and helpful among our target market. We created an app that businesses will encourage their employees to download under the statistically-backed premise that active individuals display higher levels of cognitive function and lower health care rates on average than their sedentary counterparts. While designing the app we conducted both primary and secondary market research on which features and elements of the app would be most desired.

Legal socialization examines how people acquire their views about the law. A key tenet within this field is that fair interactions with nonlegal authorities, such as teachers, influence people’s legal values (i.e., the ubiquity hypothesis) which subsequently influences how people judge legal authority later in life. This study uses data from the New Hampshire Youth Survey to test the ubiquity hypothesis. Participants completed measures of how procedurally just their teachers were in general, as well as the procedural justice of their least and favorite teachers. Approximately 45 days later, they participated in an experiment where they read a vignette describing an interaction between a police officer and a young adult. Participants read vignettes where the officer either did or did not give a voice to the young adult and did or did not behave in a neutral manner. After reading the vignette, participants were asked to judge the procedural justice and legitimacy of the officer. The results indicated students’ judgments of the officer’s procedural justice were not influenced by prior experiences with teacher procedural justice. Judgments of officer legitimacy, on the other hand, were associated with teacher procedural justice, specifically participant’s least favorite teacher. These results indicate a more nuanced view of the ubiquity hypothesis than has been portrayed by legal socialization scholars whereby prior experiences with nonlegal authority affect some legal judgments but not others.

In our society, technology has found itself as the root cause of a certain level of modernization. It wasn’t long ago when people heavily depended on bank tellers to complete cash transactions at a bank. Now however, much of the bank teller’s job has been automated in the form of ATM’s and electronic kiosks at drive through lanes. Automation is the current trend, and more departments are going to experience it. To those wondering which area or department may be hit next by a wave of technological automation, the answer is quite simple: CRM. In its raw form, CRM, which stands for Customer Relationship Management, is a “system for managing your relationships with customers” (Hubspot). Essentially, it is a software intended to help companies maintain strong relationships with their customers, customers being a critical part of the process. A good CRM system should benefit both the business and the customer. However, this is easier said than done, making the million dollar question the following: how can CRM systems be improved to truly benefit both the business and the customer? This paper will demonstrate that the answer is quite simple: automation. Through secondary research, as well as interviews conducted with various business professionals, I will demonstrate that automation and integration can make the process much more efficient and can erase a lot of errors in the process. Automation is the future of business, and this fact is not any less true in the CRM field.

This research paper explores how different relationships between people and nature can be fostered by learning experiences to bridge harmful gaps in the field of sustainability. Current disconnectedness from nature and people both within and across geographical borders hinder the cultivation of sustainable solutions. After attending a sustainability-oriented educational experience abroad in Ecuador recently, I decided to investigate how cross-cultural exchanges in Ecuador influences participants’ views of nature, new points of intersectionality participants learn while amongst nature in Ecuador, and what about this experience made it uniquely meaningful. Research methods included individual interviews and a group hike and picnic focus group discussion to collect qualitative data. I found that during this experience, students were able to lean into being vulnerable with each other, connect with indigenous community members beyond language borders, and connect with nature in ways that fostered awareness of the human position within it. From this, I learned that there were unique aspects of this learning experience that allowed for these relationships to be built and therefore for sustainable knowledge from the trip to stick when participants got back to the United States. The amount and flexibility of learning and processing time and dynamics created by classroom structure were important variables to the effectiveness of the learning experience. Institutions can learn from these experiences and connect people back to nature to implement successful sustainability solutions in the future.

This Honors Thesis describes the work done to implement an assembler for a MIPS-like processor. MIPS was a processor designed in the 1980s. While assemblers are available for the MIPS processor, the assembler described below was developed specifically for a MIPS-like processor designed as part of another project. This project was undertaken to improve the understanding of processor architecture, assembly language, machine language, and how to translate assembly instructions into machine language. Assembly language is a human readable language for writing computer programs. It is a low-level language that is processor specific. Modern languages such as C++ have to first be translated into assembly language and then translated into machine language. Machine language is the zeros and ones that the computer understands. While the original programs written in the mid 1900s were required to be written in machine language, that is no longer feasible since programs are much larger and the processors are more complex. Therefore, a means of translating from high-level languages to machine language is required. The work described here concerns the translation from assembly language to machine language.

This thesis recalls a famous Greek comedy's critique of higher education and examines how it might apply to the modern university. In order to understand the application of such a critique, this thesis necessarily works to define the spirit of the university as it was formed in the cross-civilizational decedents of Plato's Academy. After the first universities, I examine the development of higher education in the United States. Ultimately I argue that the Aristophanic critique of Socrates and higher education is applicable in a very important way to the modern university. I offer two policy recommendations that might offer an important starting point for recalling the spirit of the university.

A collection of three short stories whose goal is to think about the differences between the lives of Tamil speaking Indians living in India and Tamil speaking Indians living in the US as immigrants. The central conflict in all three stories comes from a general sense of discomfort around family members made worse by the personal ideology of each story’s central character. Their family is more aligned with Indian values but they feel more aligned with American values.
