Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Life and Sports is a collection of short stories about how sports shape the daily lives and outlooks of four main characters. In "Like Father, Like Son," Carson learns the ins and outs of the game of golf from his father, Frank, but is shocked to learn that his dad won some of his trophies by cheating. Carson has always firmly believed in fair, competitive play \u2014 a lesson he thought he had learned from his father. Now, with a big tournament coming up, Carson is forced to face the unpleasant truth that his father is not the upright idol he had once thought him to be. "Cracked Ice" follows the story of Jamal Booker, a hockey player from the small town of Jackson Wyoming. His father is in jail for armed robbery, so he and his mother are forced to live off her single paycheck. Money is tight, but Jamal's battered hockey equipment is no reflection of his skill, as scouts come from all over to observe his Wayne Gretzky-like skating ability. When he takes a bad hit in a game, Jamal realizes he has to choose between his passion for hockey and his health and family. "Troubled Past" is a story about a boy whose love of baseball is all that remains after the loss of his father. When that love is tested, Johnny turns to his mother for comfort and realizes that she might present just as real of a connection to his father as the game they loved, that is if the story she is telling can be trusted. In "Dribbling Between the Cones," star player Zach Farmer learns the hard way the importance of being a team player. He may be the star of the team, but the star has to shine in a way that makes his whole team brighter.

Much of this thesis deals with taking for-profit business principles and applying them to a non-profit institution. The ASU Art Museum is a public institution; therefore, it needs to measure success by how well it maximizes public benefit. Profit is the main gauge used for assessing the success of a business. Public benefit is more important for a museum because a museum remains a going concern regardless of whether money is made, as long as it receives the stipulated amounts in donations, grants, and endowment. Our work includes proposals for marketing, the board, product, charging admission, child development, signage, and finances. We seek to make recommendations that are in line with the museum's mission and that help fulfill its role as a public institution. We commend the Museum, as it is a fine institution.

Abstract Development of a Vaccine for Immunization Against Smallpox and Anthrax Jason Maurice Cameron Biological weapons are often considered to be the most dangerous weapons of mass destruction because of there potential to infect huge numbers of people, who may then in turn infect others who were not even present at the point of initial impact. Among the most feared biological weapons are those that contain smallpox and anthrax because of these diseases' high rates of both infection and death. For this reason, the development of a vaccine that immunizes the receivers against both smallpox and anthrax would be great progress. This study seeks to develop such a vaccine by constructing a recombination plasmid that will introduce new genes that combat anthrax into the strain of vaccinia virus (VV), the virus used to vaccinate against smallpox. This study includes a highly detailed analysis of the various processes used to attempt this recombination and proposes plans further research into the subject.

Under the supervision of Pofessor Robert Hammond, I handled the programming and record-keeping needs of a project at the Arizona Public Service Solar Test and Research Center (STAR). In the course of the first year that I worked there, I became aware that STAR's Data Management System (DMS) was in need of an overhaul due to an increasingly volatile date set that was quickly growing in size. STAR management was looking for a software system that would retrieve and store data automatically, that would contain a friendly user-interface, that minimized space usage on a crowded hard drive, that provided quick access to charts, and that generated statistical analysis of solar plant operation. STAR's current DMS consists of four top-level procedures. The latest version of STAR's DMS began operation two and a half years ago. The goal of the following chapters is to document and critique the software development process that I used to bring the Visual Basic for Excel version of the current software components into existence. In addition, the conclusion will include a look into the future of STAR's DMS as management introduces an Access database version for the implementation of the DMS.
