Barrett, The Honors College at Arizona State University proudly showcases the work of undergraduate honors students by sharing this collection exclusively with the ASU community.

Barrett accepts high performing, academically engaged undergraduate students and works with them in collaboration with all of the other academic units at Arizona State University. All Barrett students complete a thesis or creative project which is an opportunity to explore an intellectual interest and produce an original piece of scholarly research. The thesis or creative project is supervised and defended in front of a faculty committee. Students are able to engage with professors who are nationally recognized in their fields and committed to working with honors students. Completing a Barrett thesis or creative project is an opportunity for undergraduate honors students to contribute to the ASU academic community in a meaningful way.

Poetry therapy is an arts-based therapy that has the potential to be applied to any population if the facilitator is motivated to work closely and compassionately with people of various backgrounds. Therapeutic poetry workshops were conducted with adults with disabilities and previously incarcerated men over the course of several months.

Poetry therapy is an arts-based therapy that has the potential to be applied to any population if the facilitator is motivated to work closely and compassionately with people of various backgrounds. Therapeutic poetry workshops were conducted with adults with disabilities and previously incarcerated men over the course of several months. Each workshop was analyzed for successes and areas for improvement, and adaptations were made between consecutive workshops. After the completion of all the workshops, recommendations were provided for working with each population and for applying poetry therapy successfully. Finally, the application of poetry therapy to healthcare, specifically nursing, was addressed as a way to use the knowledge gained from this project to lessen the emotional burden of being a patient and being a healthcare provider.

This paper dives into the economic theory behind credit and lending markets to uncover the driving forces behind financial exclusion in modern finance. It breaks down the market size and demographic of the unbanked population in the United States and highlights the market failures and bad actors responsible for causing financial exclusion in credit markets. Finally, it introduces Zivoe Finance, a new approach to financial inclusion that is designed to expand affordable credit access across the globe. Zivoe is a decentralized credit protocol started in part by the authors of this paper that empowers anyone to fund affordable, inclusive loans in underserved financial sectors. The remainder of this paper is dedicated to understanding Zivoe Finance, how it works, the challenges the authors faced in building it, and how one can participate in its mission moving forward.

The aim of this thesis is to provide prelicensure nursing faculty at Arizona State University with a supplemental resource and presentation on inclusivity, with specific respect to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transexual, Queer (LGBTQ+) demographic. Background research posits that prelicensure nursing faculty possess limited information about how to teach students to provide inclusive care and communicate respectfully with patients in the LGBTQ+ population group. This project synthesizes current research pertaining to health inequities within this demographic, and summarizes reported patient care experiences to illustrate a need for prelicensure faculty education in this area. Information from this research was extrapolated, and a supplemental resource regarding inclusivity created, which was presented to prelicensure nursing faculty at a staff meeting using an in-person modality. A survey was conducted at the conclusion of this educational presentation, gathering anonymous demographic data, as well as opinions as to the usefulness of the presentation in the setting of prelicensure nursing education. Results were then analyzed thematically, with 70% of those surveyed currently incorporating some form of LGBTQ+ education within their curriculum. These results suggest the majority of surveyed prelicensure faculty found the educational presentation and accompanying resource both useful and informative, and intend to apply information learned to their future practice as a nursing educator. These findings provide justification for continuing education and additional learning experiences in this area.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of Singapore’s education fundamentals, policy outlook, and how it relates to the overall economic conditions in Singapore. It begins by providing context to modern Singapore’s economy and how it has become a leading global economic player. It then lays out the founding principles of education – primarily influenced by Lee Kuan Yew– and how it relates to the education system, policy, and Ministry of Education today. In order to better understand the impact of investing in human capital via education, the paper examines the relatively new policy “SkillsFuture” and the impact it has made on education advancement, the economic state within Singapore, and the impact it has made on Singapore’s foreign relations and FDI. I find that while it is not possible to conclude direct causation, SkillsFuture’s course offerings generally align with GDP growth by industry, job availability, and FDI flows by industry. This indicates that SkillsFuture as a lifelong learning initiative may have a positive impact on Singapore’s economy and global presence. SkillsFuture’s effects attest to the necessity of lifelong learning and the positive impact it can have on both the economy and individuals in Singapore.

This thesis focuses on the increasing emphasis on sustainability within the fashion industry and how brands, specifically H&M, can increase their market share through updating their in-store retail strategy. This thesis focuses on the increasing emphasis on sustainability within the fashion industry and how brands, specifically H&M, can increase their market share through updating their in-store retail strategy. Seven common retail strategies are analyzed and recommendations in each area are made to enhance H&M’s emphasis on sustainability. To support these potential recommendations, two focus groups were conducted to evaluate some potential in-store marketing elements. Upon the conclusion of the focus group research, participant’s thoughts were taken into consideration to revise the recommended retail strategies. Overall, by implementing the recommended retail marketing strategies, H&M can incorporate their Conscious line more fully within their stores and promote their new sustainable focus to further their brand in the future.

Heart Rate Variability is a measurement of the autonomic response to stimulation or the body's ability to adapt to changes in stimuli. Heart rate variability is a representation of stress reaction of the body, and so a higher heart rate variability is a higher overall state of health and higher resilience. Furthermore, with increased availability of devices, heart rate variability can be utilized to track and measure health, wellness and fitness. Therefore, there is great potential for application of heart rate variability to track levels of performance and adaptation to stress and training loads. Heart rate variability can be a very useful for individuals to have a greater understanding of overall resilience.
