The contributions made by architects to our society are rarely understood or recognized by the average citizen. Furthermore, architecture, though truthfully lacking in diversity, is a field plagued by unhelpful an incorrect stereotypes, deterring many from attempting to enter the field. The blame is not on the community alone; by failing to engage in public discourse about the importance of good design in the built environment and remaining aloof, many architects have contributed to their own marginalization. Part of the problem is a gap in communication between architects and non-architects \u2014 how can we hope to understand one another when it appears that we don't even speak the same language? Some design advocates believe that basic design should be taught in schools, just as we teach algebra and English. This would allow architects to teach the basic language that we speak to a broad audience, thus expanding discourse and appreciation for the potential of the built environment. In this way, people will become actively involved in the spaces around them, and hopefully be willing to devote money and effort into the betterment of their community through the promotion of good architectural practices.

The development of plant-derived antigens is very promising in vaccine research and the ability to synthesize vaccines cheaply and safely in plant, which can then be ingested, has enormous potential benefits. The goal of this project is to summarize and synthesize the work of current scientists on this issue into a cohesive argument in favor of plant-derived vaccinations, while acknowledging any possible drawbacks to their development and the actions that are being taken to overcome them. Hepatitis B, a virus for which orally administered, plant-based vaccines are currently being developed, serves as the case study in which these issues are analyzed. It was found that the synthesized protein is effective immunogenic in humans, but there is still the remaining challenge of making it generate a strong enough immune response through simple ingestion. For this reason, it is clear that plant-derived, oral vaccinations merit further research and hold real prospects of success.

Abstract Hope and Dreams: Insight into Autism Art Benefit Exhibition Megan H. Tollefson Hope and Dreams: Insight into Autism was a social outreach project benefiting autism research in the Phoenix Valley via an art exhibition. Autism is a widely discussed disorder that affects more than 1.5 million people in the United States. It has had a significant personal impact on my life, as I have two cousins with the disorder, as well as o the lives of millions of others. The project aimed to educate the public on autism, support families dealing with the disorder, and raise funds for essential research to better understand, treat, and prevent autism. The variety of paintings in the exhibition was meant to be representative of the many facets of autism while inspiring hope for viewers. The project also intended to advocate the arts as a viable method for communicating for collective community pulse in the face of increasing autism prevalence. The project process hoped to speak as a visual, social and most importantly, a human commentary on the current state of autism in America. My artwork was selected as the winner for the Sally A. McKenna memorial exhibition for spring 2008, and the exhibition took place in the Step Gallery in the heart of Tempe. The paintings I created and the marketing for the event allowed me to create a meaningful thesis project and combine my interest in business and the arts. I was also able to donate several thousand dollars and one of the paintings to the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center.

Abstract Molecular Engineering of Novel Polymeric Agents for Targeted Cancer Gene Therapy Dana Matthews Cancer gene cell therapy is a strategy that involves the administration of genes for correcting the effect of mutated cancer cells in order to induce tumor cell death. In particular, genes that encode for pro-apoptotic proteins can result in death of tumor cells. Prostate cancer is a very common cancer among males in America, and as highly destructive chemotherapy and radiation are generally the only treatments available once the cancer has metastasized, there is a need for the development of treatments that can specifically target and kill prostate cancer cells, while demonstrating low toxicity to other tissue. This experiment will attempt to create such a treatment through gene therapy techniques. The parallel synthesis and DNA binding affinity assay utilized in these experiments have produced a polymer that surpasses pEI-25, a gene delivery polymer standard, in both transfection efficacy and low cytotoxicity and trafficking of polyplexes in the cell, and finding methods to increase the transfection efficacy and specificity of polyplexes for PC3-PSMA cells.

A calculation of the dwell time for two successive rectangular barriers in the opaque limit is given and the result depends on the barrier widths and hence does not lead to superluminal tunneling or the Hartman effect.

As am artist, I am primarily interested in the representation of the human form. I am most interested in self-portraiture, which serves as a tool to better understand my perception of myself and how it fluctuates based on context. Each self-portrait is indicative of my reactions to the world around me and also to dreams, by which I mean the involuntary experiences that occur while we sleep or are unaware of the physical world around us. I tend to take a Freudian approach to understand the concepts of the subconscious mind and dreams. I also use pattern and design elements in my work to serve backgrounds for my figures. These hold symbolic significance and illustrate the idea of using dreams as a source for my imagery.

Unfortunately, rape has always been a part of war, but recently, media attention has focused on how rape has become a weapon of war on a massive scale. Though wartime rape and sexual assault has come to the forefront of our attention, the theories explaining wartime rape are still not

Unfortunately, rape has always been a part of war, but recently, media attention has focused on how rape has become a weapon of war on a massive scale. Though wartime rape and sexual assault has come to the forefront of our attention, the theories explaining wartime rape are still not adequate enough to explicate its presence in both the Rwandan and Bosnian Wars. These conflicts were chosen for two reasons. Firstly, they are two of the major conflicts in which rape ahs played a significant part. Secondly, these conflicts played an important role in the transistion in international law from focusing on murders and death to rape and sexual violence. For example, the Jean-Paul Akayesu trial was the first time in which rape was considered a crime against humanity. However, if the ultimate goal is to prevent wartime rape, it is not enough to simply prosecute those who commit it; rather, we must understand the reasons that it occurs. All of the existing theories are partially valid, but none presents a truly holistic explanation for wartime rape. In this paper, I will seek to composite a holistic approach, with the hope that such an approach will prevent the institution of policies that may be either ineffective or counter-productive for the safety of women.

HIV/AIDS exists in a rapidly globalizing world, but areas such as South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa bear the greatest burden of the disease. The World Health Organization has created UNAIDS and a multitude of NGOs have also sprung up in response. However, the United States' President's Emergency Plan for AIDS

HIV/AIDS exists in a rapidly globalizing world, but areas such as South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa bear the greatest burden of the disease. The World Health Organization has created UNAIDS and a multitude of NGOs have also sprung up in response. However, the United States' President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is the first state-sponsored organization entirely funded by the government and various charities. The creation and implementation of this act can be seen as a unilateral act by the US in the global health arena and a departure away from individual states only funding unilateral campaigns within their own borders, which gives rise to the questions of the motives of the US in providing this AID outside of established global agencies such as UNAIDS. By Examining the case of South Africa, the conclusion will be reached that PEPFAR is a success. There has been noticeable and positive change in the country since the US intervention in the form of PEPFAR. An analysis and review of PEPFAR in South Africa will serve as evidence for the success of PEPFAR and the case for the US's continued unilateralism in global healthcare.

The implementation of a farmers market on the Arizona State University Tempe campus would benefit student helath, the local community, and the environment. A 2009 survey of university students states that "over 60 percent [of students] eat two or fewer servings of fruits and vegetables a day," which falls below the health standard. A campus farmers market would give students easier access to fresh produce. Through purchasing products from local vendors, students will establish better connections with the community while supporting the local economy. In addition, farmers markets encourage sustainable practices. According to a survey conducted by Farmers Markets Today, "85% of farmers market vendors traveled fewer than 50 miles to sell at a famers market [while]... nationwide, food travels an average of 1,500 miles before reaching its consumer." Thus, greenhouse gas emissions can be significantly reduced through purchasing local products. The purposes of a campus farmers market act in conjunction with ASU's intentions to become a New American University, which values students' well-being, the local community, and sustainability.

Sprouts Farmers Market is a natural grocery retailer that has undertaken a major growth strategy in recent years, and as a result, will soon face the task of managing over 150 stores in 7 states. This rapid expansion has created a need for process improvement and automation for many tasks that have become too time consuming and cumbersome. As an intern working in the purchasing division of this company for over a year now, I have had the opportunity to identify some of these issues, one of which I have addressed through completion of my honors creative project.
