The aim of this project is to show an in-depth look at the complexity of creating a small business venture while also doing so in a sustainable manner. My business venture is a brand called Makeshifts where I create garments as well as other products through sustainable methods such as upcycling and zero waste practices. Everything from the material sourcing to the finished product will be done in an effort to leave no waste behind. As for the background portion, it dives into how we got to this point in garment production where the need for sustainable production methods have become increasingly apparent. Lastly, the creative project portion is documented here along with the supplemental attachments with my overall conclusions from this endeavor being summarized to wrap it all up.

“They told us that if your brain was less developed than others, less fit, more cruel, you were more likely to mutate due to the virus.” Drew can’t remember her life before she woke up on the cold concrete floor of the hospital, chained up alongside several others. All she– and anyone else in the facility– knows is what the guards have told her: they’ve been exposed to the Insects, prior humans who caught an airborne virus that turned them into zombie-like creatures. To prevent a mutation into an insect, Drew and the others must quarantine inside the abandoned hospital, training their minds and bodies against the virus living dormant inside of them. The virus that is triggered by one’s cruelty. As time goes on, lines begin to blur between being kept safe and being kept a prisoner, and it becomes hard for Drew to know who to trust. Combining elements of sci-fi and horror, Operation Insect serves as a cautionary tale of current incarceration issues in America.

Human beings have always created shelters in order to live within the context of Earth’s natural processes. Of course, different places have yielded different solutions. Dictated by climate, physical conditions, natural resources, and hazards, people have both adapted to the environments in which they live and shaped them over time. Inevitably, the relationship between humans and the planet has shifted over time, as the effects of climate change increase with rising global temperatures, natural disasters are increasing in frequency and intensity (Fig. 1). Consequently, establishing precedents for increasingly effective temporary disaster relief housing is a crucial step toward supporting at-risk communities. Implementing clear and efficient procedures in areas around the world with a natural proclivity for geophysical, climatological, hydraulic, and meteorological disasters is paramount. Time-efficient, sustainably built, and cost-effective temporary housing and community support spaces that inherently promote the social-cultural values of at-risk areas will help mitigate the lasting detriment of disasters. This proposal advocates for a new precedent in designing disaster relief housing to address the pressing global issue of community displacement resulting from natural disasters.

This thesis explores the evolution of Indian bridal attire and its cultural significance within the context of modern weddings. It delves into the intersection of tradition and contemporary influences, particularly examining the impact of Indian cinema and Indian couture on bridal aspirations. While Bollywood and Indian fashion have played substantial roles in shaping perceptions of the "Big Fat Indian Wedding," this study reveals a growing disconnect between mainstream representations and authentic cultural heritage. Through empirical research and personal narratives, it advocates for a celebration of diverse regional customs while embracing contemporary trends, highlighting the importance of cultural authenticity and women's empowerment in shaping the narrative of Indian weddings. Accompanied by a creative project in the form of a short film, this endeavor aims to inspire filmmakers and fashion designers to prioritize diverse representation and individualized expression, ensuring that Indian weddings remain dynamic manifestations of tradition and identity.

Japanese puzzle boxes are exquisite wooden creations that combine artistry, craftsmanship, and the thrill of solving intricate puzzles. Originating in Hakone, Japan, over 100 years ago, these boxes are called "himitsu-bako," which translates to "Personal Secret Box" due to their meticulously designed hidden compartments and complex locking mechanisms. Unlocking these boxes involves a precise sequence of movements, twists, and rotations, turning the process into an interactive and engaging challenge. The goal of this project is to create a puzzle box from scratch while incorporating some of the mechanics from the traditional Japanese puzzle boxes.

This thesis addresses the Cary Ballet Company's challenges in costume management by creating a comprehensive digital database and reorganizing their storage system. The company's relocation to a smaller space resulted in disorganized offsite storage, leading to damaged costumes and financial inefficiencies, This project was designed to create a comprehensive management system through the creation of a custom created database. Costumes were reorganized and had data collected and then a custom database was designed to collect all of the aforementioned data. Collaboration with volunteers enabled accurate data entry and retrieval, intuitive labeling, and conditional input systems which improved physical and digital organization and streamlined costume access. Future plans include expanding the database to incorporate barcode scanning and prop management, reducing costs and optimizing the company's artistic assets. This project hopes to demonstrate how structured costume management can balance artistic heritage with financial sustainability.
