The original goal of this project was to create a case study that would help figure out a way to figure out how to get better food, and more food, to areas where there is little to no logistical infrastructure in place. Specifically, the Navajo Nation in North Eastern Arizona

The original goal of this project was to create a case study that would help figure out a way to figure out how to get better food, and more food, to areas where there is little to no logistical infrastructure in place. Specifically, the Navajo Nation in North Eastern Arizona where the road infrastructure is not as developed and without enough stores to saturate the region. A partnership with Peddler's Son Produce, a company who was hoping to expand their distribution services to North-Eastern Arizona and other lesser-served areas across Arizona, allowed for the creation of Logistical Route Simulations which allowed the expanse of what areas could be reached with cross-docking stations in various areas. After all the information of the route simulations was compiled, it was abstracted to a case study. There is no one solution of how to expand a company so what the case study does is give students all of the information for costs and potential routes and then tells them to decide how many stops should be taken at each city in each route, which routes should be taken, and which routes shouldn't, and which cross-docking station, or multiple cross-docking stations the company should choose. The Case Study also includes teaching notes for the professor doing it which have the completed logistic route simulations and all the data and information that was learned but not included in the case study. This case study can now be used to help others figure out how to create profitable logistics routes which serves the original goal of the project.

This thesis looks at a short-term solution to the truck driver shortage: transitioning U.S. military veterans into truck driver roles. Due to the adoption of self-driving trucks, the shortage is projected to end in 2022; however, freight companies may not be able to keep up with growing freight volumes until then. In the meantime, providing commercial driver's license (CDL) training on military bases has the potential to alleviate the shortage and veteran unemployment. A number of journal articles were read and interviews were conducted to determine the practicality of this solution. This thesis includes those findings and a number of considerations that should be made before implementing it.

This research focuses and discusses on the Supply Chain process within the mental health industry and its impact on the center for health empowerment education employment recovery. Our first approach was to research background information on mental health sector. With 115 billion dollars on mental health treatment investment annually nationwide, many citizens continues to struggle to find help. Due to such a complex structure of specific industry, we needed to focus more specifically, Arizona. Even within Arizona, we chose one organization to discuss their complex supply chain logistic issues. Through analysis of beneficiaries, technology system, finance management, employer, many educational programs, we were able to identify possible improvements. Through utilizing Supply Chain concepts, my co-author and I came up with few solutions that can greatly benefit the organization.

Despite significant growth in research about supply chain integration, many questions remain unanswered regarding the path to integration and the benefits that can be accrued. This dissertation examines three aspects of supply chain integration in the health sector, leveraging the healthcare context to extend the theoretical boundaries, as well as applying supply chain knowledge to an industry known to be immature in terms of its supply chain practices.

In the first chapter, a supply chain operating model that breaks away from the traditional healthcare supply chain structures is examined. Consolidated Service Centers (CSCs) embody a shared services strategy, consolidating supply chain functions across multiple hospitals (i.e. horizontal integration) and disintermediating several key roles in healthcare supply chains such as the group purchasing organizations and national distributors. Through case studies, key characteristics of CSCs that enable them to reduce the level of supply chain complexity are examined.

The second chapter investigates buyer-supplier relationships in healthcare (i.e. supplier integration), where a high level of distrust exists between hospitals and their suppliers. This context is leveraged to study both enablers and barriers to buyer-supplier trust. The results suggest that contracting counteracts the negative effects of dependence on trust. Furthermore, the study reveals that hospital buyers may, in some situations, perceive dedicated resource investments made by suppliers as trust barriers, associating such investments with supplier upselling and entrenchment tactics. This runs contrary to how dedicated investments are perceived in most other industries.

In the third chapter, the triadic relationship between the hospital, supplier, and physician is taken into consideration. Given their professional autonomy and power, physicians commonly undermine hospital efforts in supply base rationalization and standardization. This study examines whether physician-hospital integration (i.e. customer integration) can drive physicians towards supply selection practices that align with the hospital’s sourcing strategies and ultimately result in better supply chain performance. This study utilizes theory on agency triads and professionalism and tests hypotheses through a random effects regression model applied to data about hospital financial performance and physician-hospital arrangements.

Within humanitarian logistics, there has been a growing trend of adopting information systems to enhance the responsiveness of aid delivery. By utilizing such technology, organizations are able to take advantage of information sharing and its benefits, including improved coordination and reduced uncertainty. This paper seeks to explore this phenomenon using organizational information processing theory. Drawing from complexity literature, we argue that demand complexity should have a positive relationship with information sharing. Moreover, higher levels of information sharing should generate higher responsiveness. Lastly, we examine the effects of organizational structure on the relationship between information sharing and responsiveness. We posit that the degree of centralization will have a positive moderation effect on the aforementioned relationship. The paper then describes the methodology planned to test these hypotheses. We will design a case-based simulation that will incorporate current disaster situations and parameters experienced by Community Preparedness Exercise and Fair (COMPEF), which acts as a broker for the City of Tempe and various humanitarian groups. With the case-based simulation data, we will draw theoretical and managerial implications for the field of humanitarian logistics.

This thesis will analyze the operations of two nonprofit organizations located in different parts of the world. One local and one international nonprofit organization was chosen for this thesis/creative project because of the diverse culture, customs and regulations in each setting. The paper will discuss the operations of St. Vincent de Paul, the Chandler Conference of St. Vincent de Paul, and Sri Sai Darshan Trust (SSDT). The paper begins with a brief history of nonprofit organizations followed by a detailed background on both organizations. The management (organizational structure), finances, marketing, and legalities will be discussed of each nonprofit. The paper will then examine the specialized projects of each organization throughout the year. A PEST, SWOT, value chain, Kraljic, spend, and demand analysis were conducted based off of the research on each nonprofit. The paper will then discuss the problems each organization exhibits and the potential solutions the nonprofits can implement into their daily operations in order to resolve them. This section analyzes the similarities and differences within each business area of the nonprofit organization. Short-term solutions to current business problems and long-term solutions to organizational problems will be discussed in this section. The conclusion is the final element of the thesis. In this section, a balanced scorecard will be created for each nonprofit organization. In addition, the authors will discuss what they learned throughout the entire process. The goal of this thesis/creative project was to integrate the knowledge and concepts from business (marketing, finance, management, accounting, supply chain management, and computer information systems), and find an application for each within nonprofit organizations around the world.

The purpose of this honors thesis is to discover ways for a large humanitarian organization to more cost effectively manage its fleet of vehicles. The first phase of work involved cleaning the large data set provided by the organization. Next, we used the program STATA to run a Seemingly Unrelated Regression (SUR) to see which variables have the largest effect on the percentage of price decline and total mileage of each vehicle. The SUR model indicated that price decline is most influenced by cumulative minor repairs, total accessories, age, percentage of paved roads, and number of accidents. In addition, total mileage was most affected by percentage of paved roads, cumulative minor repairs, all wheel drive, and age. The final step of the project involved providing recommendations to the humanitarian organization based on the above results. We recommend several changes to their fleet management, including: driver training programs, increasing the amount of preventative maintenance performed on vehicles, and increasing the amount of accessories purchased for each vehicle. Implementing these changes could potentially save the organization millions of dollars due to the scope of its operation.
