High-entropy alloys possessing mechanical, chemical, and electrical properties that far exceed those of conventional alloys have the potential to make a significant impact on many areas of engineering. Identifying element combinations and configurations to form these alloys, however, is a difficult, time-consuming, computationally intensive task. Machine learning has revolutionized many different fields due to its ability to generalize well to different problems and produce computationally efficient, accurate predictions regarding the system of interest. In this thesis, we demonstrate the effectiveness of machine learning models applied to toy cases representative of simplified physics that are relevant to high-entropy alloy simulation. We show these models are effective at learning nonlinear dynamics for single and multi-particle cases and that more work is needed to accurately represent complex cases in which the system dynamics are chaotic. This thesis serves as a demonstration of the potential benefits of machine learning applied to high-entropy alloy simulations to generate fast, accurate predictions of nonlinear dynamics.

The development of stab-resistant Kevlar armor has been an ongoing field of research
since the late 1990s, with the ultimate goal of improving the multi-threat capabilities of
traditional soft-body armor while significantly improving its protective efficiency - the amount
of layers of armor material required to defeat threats. To create a novel, superior materials
system to reinforce Kevlar armor for the Norica Capstone project, this thesis set out to
synthesize, recover, and characterize zinc oxide nanowire colloids.

The materials synthesized were successfully utilized in the wider Capstone effort to
dramatically enhance the protective abilities of Kevlar, while the data obtained on the 14
hydrothermal synthesis attempts and numerous challenges at recovery provided critical
information on the synthesis parameters involved in the reliable, scalable mass production of the
nanomaterial additive. Additionally, recovery was unconventionally facilitated in the absence of
a vacuum filtration apparatus with nanoscale filters by intentionally inducing electrostatic
agglomeration of the nanowires during standard gravity filtration. The subsequent application of
these nanowires constituted a pioneering use in the production of nanowire-reinforced
STF-based Kevlar coatings, and support the future development and, ultimately, the
commercialization of lighter and more-protective soft armor systems.

In this thesis, Inception V3, a convolutional neural network model from Google, was partially retrained to categorize pipeline images based on their damage modes. The images for different damage modes of the pipeline were simulated through MATLAB to represent image data collected from in-line pipe inspection. The final convolutional layer of the model was retrained with the simulated pipeline images using TensorFlow as the base platform. First, a small-scale retraining was done with real images and simulated images to compare the differences in performance. Then, using simulated images, a 2^5 full factorial design of experiment and individual parametric studies were performed on five different chosen parameters, including training steps, learning rate, batch size, training data size and image noise. The effect of each parameter on the performance of the model was evaluated and analyzed. It is crucial to understand that due to the nature of the experiment, the learnings may or may not apply to neural network models trained for other tasks. After analyzing the results, the effects and trade-offs for each parameter are discussed in detail. In addition, a method of predicting the training time was proposed. Based on the findings, an optimized model was proposed for this training exercise, with 1180 training steps, a learning rate of 0.01, a batch size of 100 and a training data set of 200 images. The optimized model reached 87.2% accuracy with a training time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds. This study will enhance our understanding in applying machine learning techniques in damage and risk identification.

Widespread knowledge of fracture mechanics is mostly based on previous models that generalize crack growth in materials over several loading cycles. The objective of this project is to characterize crack growth that occurs in titanium alloys, specifically Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, at the sub-cycle scale, or within a single loading cycle.

Widespread knowledge of fracture mechanics is mostly based on previous models that generalize crack growth in materials over several loading cycles. The objective of this project is to characterize crack growth that occurs in titanium alloys, specifically Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, at the sub-cycle scale, or within a single loading cycle. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), imaging analysis is performed to observe crack behavior at ten loading steps throughout the loading and unloading paths. Analysis involves measuring the incremental crack growth and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of specimens at loading ratios of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5. This report defines the relationship between crack growth and the stress intensity factor, K, of the specimens, as well as the relationship between the R-ratio and stress opening level. The crack closure phenomena and effect of microcracks are discussed as they influence the crack growth behavior. This method has previously been used to characterize crack growth in Al 7075-T6. The results for Ti-6Al-4V are compared to these previous findings in order to strengthen conclusions about crack growth behavior.

This research examines the current challenges of using Lamb wave interrogation methods to localize fatigue crack damage in a complex metallic structural component subjected to unknown temperatures. The goal of this work is to improve damage localization results for a structural component interrogated at an unknown temperature, by developing a probabilistic and reference-free framework for estimating Lamb wave velocities and the damage location. The methodology for damage localization at unknown temperatures includes the following key elements: i) a model that can describe the change in Lamb wave velocities with temperature; ii) the extension of an advanced time-frequency based signal processing technique for enhanced time-of-flight feature extraction from a dispersive signal; iii) the development of a Bayesian damage localization framework incorporating data association and sensor fusion. The technique requires no additional transducers to be installed on a structure, and allows for the estimation of both the temperature and the wave velocity in the component. Additionally, the framework of the algorithm allows it to function completely in an unsupervised manner by probabilistically accounting for all measurement origin uncertainty. The novel algorithm was experimentally validated using an aluminum lug joint with a growing fatigue crack. The lug joint was interrogated using piezoelectric transducers at multiple fatigue crack lengths, and at temperatures between 20°C and 80°C. The results showed that the algorithm could accurately predict the temperature and wave speed of the lug joint. The localization results for the fatigue damage were found to correlate well with the true locations at long crack lengths, but loss of accuracy was observed in localizing small cracks due to time-of-flight measurement errors. To validate the algorithm across a wider range of temperatures the electromechanically coupled LISA/SIM model was used to simulate the effects of temperatures. The numerical results showed that this approach would be capable of experimentally estimating the temperature and velocity in the lug joint for temperatures from -60°C to 150°C. The velocity estimation algorithm was found to significantly increase the accuracy of localization at temperatures above 120°C when error due to incorrect velocity selection begins to outweigh the error due to time-of-flight measurements.

The wall thicknesses in applications for these components typically range between 0.03-2.5mm. Laser Powder Bed Fusion (PBF) Fatigue standards assume thickness over 5mm and consider Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) as conventional heat treatment. This study aims at investigating the dependence of High Cycle Fatigue (HCF) behavior on wall thickness and Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) for as-built Additively Manufactured Thin Wall Inconel 718 alloys. To address this aim, high cycle fatigue tests were performed on specimens of seven different thicknesses (0.3mm,0.35mm, 0.5mm, 0.75mm, 1mm, 1.5mm, and 2mm) using a Servohydraulic FatigueTesting Machine. Only half of the specimen underwent HIP, creating data for bothHIP and No-HIP specimens. Upon analyzing the collected data, it was noticed that the specimens that underwent HIP had similar fatigue behavior to that of sheet metal specimens. In addition, it was also noticed that the presence of Porosity in No-HIP specimens makes them more sensitive to changes in stress. A clear decrease in fatigue strength with the decrease in thickness was observed for all specimens.

Polylactic Acid (PLA), a thermoplastic polymer is well-known for its biocompatibility, making it ideal for the manufacturing of biomedical devices. However, the current applications of PLA are commonly limited by its intrinsic polymer characteristics, such as low modulus, mechanical strength, and thermal conductivity. To enhance these physical properties, a biocompatible nanodiamond enhanced PLA filament has been studied. Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to unveil the composition of nanodiamond in the composite. Four printing parameters: nozzle temperature, layer height, infill pattern and printing speed were considered and the Taguchi L9 orthogonal array was implemented for the design of experiments. Fused deposition modeling (FDM) technique was utilized to 3D print the PLA/Nanodiamond samples by altering the four printing parameters considered and were tested according to the standards for tensile strength, flexural strength, and thermal conductivity. Using the Taguchi optimization approach and analysis of variance (ANOVA), the generated experimental data was used to find the optimum set of printing parameters. Finally, cell studies were performed to demonstrate the biocompatibility of PLA/Nanodiamond. All these results could aid in determining the working ranges for FDM fabrication of PLA/Nanodiamond for biomedical applications.

Laser powder bed fusion (LPBF) additive manufacturing (AM) has received widespread attention due to its ability to produce parts with complicated design and better surface finish compared to other additive techniques. LPBF uses a laser heat source to melt layers of powder particles and manufactures a part based on the CAD design. This process can benefit significantly through computational modeling. The objective of this thesis was to understand the thermal transport, and fluid flow phenomena of the process, and to optimize the main process parameters such as laser power and scan speed through a combination of computational, experimental, and statistical analysis. A multi-physics model was built using to model temperature profile, bead geometry and elemental evaporation in powder bed process using a non-gaussian interaction between laser heat source and metallic powder. Owing to the scarcity of thermo-physical properties of metallic powders in literature, thermal conductivity, diffusivity, and heat capacity was experimentally tested up to a temperature of 1400 degrees C. The values were used in the computational model, which improved the results significantly. The computational work was also used to assess the impact of fluid flow around melt pool. Dimensional analysis was conducted to determine heat transport mode at various laser power/scan speed combinations. Convective heat flow proved to be the dominant form of heat transfer at higher energy input due to violent flow of the fluid around the molten region, which can also create keyhole effect. The last part of the thesis focused on gaining useful information about several features of the bead area such as contact angle, porosity, voids and melt pool that were obtained using several combinations of laser power and scan speed. These features were quantified using process learning, which was then used to conduct a full factorial design that allows to estimate the effect of the process parameters on the output features. Both single and multi-response analysis are applied to analyze the output response. It was observed that laser power has more influential effect on all the features. Multi response analysis showed 150 W laser power and 200 mm/s produced bead with best possible features.

Because of having a better axial and lateral resolution, and high attenuation coefficient, quantitative high-frequency ultrasound analysis (HFUA)

Ultrasound has become one of the most popular non-destructive characterization tools for soft materials. Compared to conventional ultrasound imaging, quantitative ultrasound has the potential of analyzing detailed microstructural variation through spectral analysis. Because of having a better axial and lateral resolution, and high attenuation coefficient, quantitative high-frequency ultrasound analysis (HFUA) is a very effective tool for small-scale penetration depth application. One of the QUS parameters, peak density had recently shown a promising response with the variation in the soft material microstructure. Acoustic scattering is arguably the most important factor behind different parametric responses in ultrasound spectra. Therefore, to evaluate peak density, acoustic scattering at different frequency levels was investigated. Analytical, computational, and experimental analysis was conducted to observe both single and multiple scattering in different microstructural setups. It was observed that peak density was an effective tool to express different levels of acoustic scattering that occurred through microstructural variation. The feasibility of the peak density parameter was further evaluated in ultrasound C-scan imaging. The study was also extended to detect the relative position of the imaged structure in the direction of wave propagation. For this purpose, a derivative parameter of peak density named mean peak to valley distance (MPVD) was developed to address the limitations of peak density. The study was then focused on detecting soft tissue malignancy. The histology-based computational study of HFUA was conducted to detect various breast tumor (soft tissue) grades. It was observed that both peak density and MPVD parameters could identify tumor grades at a certain level. Finally, the study was focused on evaluating the feasibility of ultrasound parameters to detect asymptotic breast carcinoma i.e., ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) in the surgical margin of the breast tumor. In that computational study, breast pathologies were modeled by including all the phases of DCIS. From the similar analysis mentioned above, it was understood that both peak density and MPVD parameters could detect various breast pathologies like ductal hyperplasia, DCIS, and calcification during intraoperative margin analysis. Furthermore, the spectral features of the frequency spectrums from various pathologies also provided significant information to identify them conclusively.

Disordered many-body systems are ubiquitous in condensed matter physics, materials science and biological systems. Examples include amorphous and glassy states of matter, granular materials, and tissues composed of packings of cells in the extra-cellular matrix (ECM). Understanding the collective emergent properties in these systems is crucial to improving the capability for controlling, engineering and optimizing their behaviors, yet it is extremely challenging due to their complexity and disordered nature. The main theme of the thesis is to address this challenge by characterizing and understanding a variety of disordered many-body systems via unique statistical geometrical and topological tools and the state-of-the-art simulation methods. Two major topics of the thesis are modeling ECM-mediated multicellular dynamics and understanding hyperuniformity in 2D material systems. Collective migration is an important mode of cell movement for several biological processes, and it has been the focus of a large number of studies over the past decades. Hyperuniform (HU) state is a critical state in a many-particle system, an exotic property of condensed matter discovered recently. The main focus of this thesis is to study the mechanisms underlying collective cell migration behaviors by developing theoretical/phenomenological models that capture the features of ECM-mediated mechanical communications in vitro and investigate general conditions that can be imposed on hyperuniformity-preserving and hyperuniformity-generating operations, as well as to understand how various novel transport physical properties arise from the unique hyperuniform long-range correlations.
