In contemporary society, the intersection between education and democratic engagement has become a focal point of inquiry, with researchers and educators alike recognizing the profound impact that educational experiences can have on shaping an individual's level of democratic engagement. Within this broader discourse, an increasingly relevant and pressing question emerges: How does the perception of, or the content within, ethnic studies education influence different forms of democratic engagement among college students who are notoriously known for their apathetic participation in politics and democracy? This inquiry delves into the intricate relationship between educational interventions addressing ethnic studies and the subsequent choices made by the emerging generation of politically active individuals. Understanding the nuances of this connection is crucial for informed educational practices and policies that seek to cultivate an engaged and socially conscious citizenry.

In 2022, California Governor Gavin Newsom passed Senate Bill 731 (SB731), landmark legislation that would allow individuals’ old convictions, or even an arrest without conviction, to be electronically sealed. Doing this would allow millions of people who fall into this category to not bear the burden of having limitations from their past lives. In understanding how transitional and pivotal this piece of legislation can be, the impact that it could have might be stifled due to various barriers. Understanding these truths, I take on the challenge of documenting my work with communities and community organizers to bridge the gap that is present so that we ensure that disenfranchised groups are aware and take advantage of legislation that has the potential to change their lives.

Whether we like it or not, we all have questions. What is being human? We use different responses for the same questions, using tools like religion, science, art and magic to make sense of our little existence. Everyone sees it. Everyone feels it. Everyone knows it. So, what is it? In this podcast, I will review the major players and theories involved in five areas of philosophy: existentialism, ethics, epistemology, aesthetics and metaphysics. Through subsequent interviews with community connections, ASU professors and students, we will discuss and highlight how philosophical principles are present in all areas of life, as well as how knowledge of these principles can provide a more informed perspective on the world around us.

Crisis communication in public relations involves managing communication during urgent situations that could pose a threat to a company's reputation, image, or operations. Effective crisis communication should begin with the eventual recovery of those things in mind. When a crisis occurs, the primary goals of the crisis communication team are to safeguard the company's reputation, handle media relations, and develop a recovery strategy. The fashion industry isn't immune to crises, and companies like Balenciaga, Victoria’s Secret, and adidas have faced significant public relations controversies in recent years. For instance, Balenciaga, a luxury fashion brand, faced backlash for a holiday advertising campaign that seemed to depict children holding teddy bears in bondage harnesses. Victoria’s Secret has encountered various controversies, including the release of a documentary series on Hulu uncovering connections between their CEO, Les Wexner, and Jeffrey Epstein. adidas, a sportswear brand, experienced its PR controversy, leading to the severing of ties with Kanye West, now known as Ye, following anti-Semitic remarks he made on social media. In each case, issuing a public apology was necessary. Apologies are pivotal in preventing future damage and repairing the harm caused by a crisis, including reputation restoration (Coombs, 2013). Each case study aims to identify crisis response elements that showcase companies’ efforts to recover and minimize damage to their brand reputation through their crisis communication responses. They will also explore instances where legal teams and strategies were integrated into crisis responses. Each case study examines the crises through the lenses of the initial story outbreak, media coverage, public reaction, and financial implications, showcasing the companies’ efforts to recover and minimize damage to their brand reputation through their crisis communication responses. The case studies also examine how the companies and their PR teams issued public statements and corrective action taken by the brand in order to move forward following the crisis.

Immediately following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the European Union (EU) activated the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) for Ukrainian refugees, contrasting with its inaction during the 2015 Syrian crisis. This inconsistency revealed double standards in EU refugee policy. This thesis explores the EU's Othering in its responses to the Syrian and Ukrainian refugee situations, showing how the EU portrays migrants to affirm its identity. While the response to Syrians in 2015 depicted refugees as a threat to European Christian identity, the response to Ukrainians in 2022 showed more solidarity due to shared "Europeanness." Using the TPD as a lens, this thesis exposes the EU's selective refugee protection based on racialized Othering, where more "European" groups receive favorable treatment. Media narratives further emphasize the differences between Syrian and Ukrainian refugees. The thesis calls for the EU to prioritize human rights over restrictive identity notions.

In the developed world, we often take the positive correlation between openness to trade and development for granted. After all, the world has seen the greatest amount of economic growth ever in this relatively short period of time in which global markets have been very accessible. There can be many factors attributed to this perspective on the near-universal association between trade and wealth, such as its simple, intuitive reasoning, a historical drive for developed nations to seek out beneficial trade opportunities, or perhaps even a general lack of awareness when it comes to how such enterprising attitudes may impact those living in entirely different civilizations. Whatever the reasoning may be, the reality is that global trade or openness to it is not as cut and dry as many would like to believe, nor does trade openness come as freely as one might expect, as certain conditions are needed in order to foster access to well-developed markets. It has been observed recently that the cost of doing trade, so to speak, has been increasing globally as certain state and nonstate actors push against the free trade model developed by the United States after World War II. It is with this challenge in mind that we explore the recent changes in the balance of global power dynamics that have led to a decline in the openness of the globalized economy. Saying this, we are not advocating for an end to "globalization", rather, this paper is meant to observe multiple potential frustrations to the current economic global order and the resulting fallout of trade among the world’s top economies.
