The pervasive use of social media gives it a crucial role in helping the public perceive reliable information. Meanwhile, the openness and timeliness of social networking sites also allow for the rapid creation and dissemination of misinformation. It becomes increasingly difficult for online users to find accurate and trustworthy information.

The pervasive use of social media gives it a crucial role in helping the public perceive reliable information. Meanwhile, the openness and timeliness of social networking sites also allow for the rapid creation and dissemination of misinformation. It becomes increasingly difficult for online users to find accurate and trustworthy information. As witnessed in recent incidents of misinformation, it escalates quickly and can impact social media users with undesirable consequences and wreak havoc instantaneously. Different from some existing research in psychology and social sciences about misinformation, social media platforms pose unprecedented challenges for misinformation detection. First, intentional spreaders of misinformation will actively disguise themselves. Second, content of misinformation may be manipulated to avoid being detected, while abundant contextual information may play a vital role in detecting it. Third, not only accuracy, earliness of a detection method is also important in containing misinformation from being viral. Fourth, social media platforms have been used as a fundamental data source for various disciplines, and these research may have been conducted in the presence of misinformation. To tackle the challenges, we focus on developing machine learning algorithms that are robust to adversarial manipulation and data scarcity.

The main objective of this dissertation is to provide a systematic study of misinformation detection in social media. To tackle the challenges of adversarial attacks, I propose adaptive detection algorithms to deal with the active manipulations of misinformation spreaders via content and networks. To facilitate content-based approaches, I analyze the contextual data of misinformation and propose to incorporate the specific contextual patterns of misinformation into a principled detection framework. Considering its rapidly growing nature, I study how misinformation can be detected at an early stage. In particular, I focus on the challenge of data scarcity and propose a novel framework to enable historical data to be utilized for emerging incidents that are seemingly irrelevant. With misinformation being viral, applications that rely on social media data face the challenge of corrupted data. To this end, I present robust statistical relational learning and personalization algorithms to minimize the negative effect of misinformation.

Models using feature interactions have been applied successfully in many areas such as biomedical analysis, recommender systems. The popularity of using feature interactions mainly lies in (1) they are able to capture the nonlinearity of the data compared with linear effects and (2) they enjoy great interpretability. In this thesis, I propose a series of formulations using feature interactions for real world problems and develop efficient algorithms for solving them.

Specifically, I first propose to directly solve the non-convex formulation of the weak hierarchical Lasso which imposes weak hierarchy on individual features and interactions but can only be approximately solved by a convex relaxation in existing studies. I further propose to use the non-convex weak hierarchical Lasso formulation for hypothesis testing on the interaction features with hierarchical assumptions. Secondly, I propose a type of bi-linear models that take advantage of interactions of features for drug discovery problems where specific drug-drug pairs or drug-disease pairs are of interest. These models are learned by maximizing the number of positive data pairs that rank above the average score of unlabeled data pairs. Then I generalize the method to the case of using the top-ranked unlabeled data pairs for representative construction and derive an efficient algorithm for the extended formulation. Last but not least, motivated by a special form of bi-linear models, I propose a framework that enables simultaneously subgrouping data points and building specific models on the subgroups for learning on massive and heterogeneous datasets. Experiments on synthetic and real datasets are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness or efficiency of the proposed methods.

Social media is used by people every day to discuss the nuances of their lives. Major League Baseball (MLB) is a popular sport in the United States, and as such has generated a great deal of activity on Twitter. As fantasy baseball continues to grow in popularity, so does the research into better algorithms for picking players. Most of the research done in this area focuses on improving the prediction of a player's individual performance. However, the crowd-sourcing power afforded by social media may enable more informed predictions about players' performances. Players are chosen by popularity and personal preferences by most amateur gamblers. While some of these trends (particularly the long-term ones) are captured by ranking systems, this research was focused on predicting the daily spikes in popularity (and therefore price or draft order) by comparing the number of mentions that the player received on Twitter compared to their previous mentions. In doing so, it was demonstrated that improved fantasy baseball predictions can be made through leveraging social media data.

Bots tamper with social media networks by artificially inflating the popularity of certain topics. In this paper, we define what a bot is, we detail different motivations for bots, we describe previous work in bot detection and observation, and then we perform bot detection of our own. For our bot detection, we are interested in bots on Twitter that tweet Arabic extremist-like phrases. A testing dataset is collected using the honeypot method, and five different heuristics are measured for their effectiveness in detecting bots. The model underperformed, but we have laid the ground-work for a vastly untapped focus on bot detection: extremist ideal diffusion through bots.

Twitter, the microblogging platform, has grown in prominence to the point that the topics that trend on the network are often the subject of the news and other traditional media. By predicting trends on Twitter, it could be possible to predict the next major topic of interest to the public.

Twitter, the microblogging platform, has grown in prominence to the point that the topics that trend on the network are often the subject of the news and other traditional media. By predicting trends on Twitter, it could be possible to predict the next major topic of interest to the public. With this motivation, this paper develops a model for trends leveraging previous work with k-nearest-neighbors and dynamic time warping. The development of this model provides insight into the length and features of trends, and successfully generalizes to identify 74.3% of trends in the time period of interest. The model developed in this work provides understanding into why par- ticular words trend on Twitter.

The spread of fake news (rumors) has been a growing problem on the internet in the past few years due to the increase of social media services. People share fake news articles on social media sometimes without knowing that those articles contain false information. Not knowing whether an article is fake or real is a problem because it causes social media news to lose credibility. Prior research on fake news has focused on how to detect fake news, but efforts towards controlling fake news articles on the internet are still facing challenges. Some of these challenges include; it is hard to collect large sets of fake news data, it is hard to collect locations of people who are spreading fake news, and it is difficult to study the geographic distribution of fake news. To address these challenges, I am examining how fake news spreads in the United States (US) by developing a geographic visualization system for misinformation. I am collecting a set of fake news articles from a website called snopes.com. After collecting these articles I am extracting the keywords from each article and storing them in a file. I then use the stored keywords to search on Twitter in order to find out the locations of users who spread the rumors. Finally, I mark those locations on a map in order to show the geographic distribution of fake news. Having access to large sets of fake news data, knowing the locations of people who are spreading fake news, and being able to understand the geographic distribution of fake news will help in the efforts towards addressing the fake news problem on the internet by providing target areas.

Social media sites are platforms in which individuals discuss a wide range of topics and share a huge amount of information about themselves and their interests. So much of this information is encoded through unstructured text that users post on the these types of sites. There has been a considerable amount of work done in respect to sentiment analysis on these sites to infer users' opinions and preferences. However there is a gap where it may be difficult to infer how a user feels about particular pages or topics that they have not conveyed their sentiment for in a observable form. Collaborative filtering is a common method used to solve this problem with user data, but has only infrequently been used with sentiment information in order to make inferences about users preferences. In this paper we extend previous work on leveraging sentiment in collaborative filtering, specifically to approximate user sentiment and subsequently their vote for candidates in an online election. Sentiment is shown to be an effective tool for making these types of predictions in the absence of other more explicit user preference information. In addition to this, we present an evaluation of sentiment analysis methods and tools that are used in state of the art sentiment analysis systems in order to understand which of these methods to leverage in our experiments.

The fight for equal transgender rights is gaining traction in the public eye, but still has a lot of progress to make in the social and legal spheres. Since public opinion is critical in any civil rights movement, this study attempts to identify the most effective methods to elicit public reactions in support of transgender rights. Topic analysis through Latent Dirichlet Allocation is performed on Twitter data, along with polarity sentiment analysis, to track the subjects which gain the most effective reactions over time. Graphing techniques are used in an attempt to visually display the trends in topics. The topic analysis techniques are effective in identifying the positive and negative trends in the data, but the graphing algorithm lacks the ability to comprehensibly display complex data with more dimensionality.

Prior research has confirmed that supervised learning is an effective alternative to computationally costly numerical analysis. Motivated by NASA's use of abort scenario matrices to aid in mission operations and planning, this paper applies supervised learning to trajectory optimization in an effort to assess the accuracy of a less time-consuming method of producing the magnitude of delta-v vectors required to abort from various points along a Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit. Although the utility of the study is limited, the accuracy of the delta-v predictions made by a Gaussian regression model is fairly accurate after a relatively swift computation time, paving the way for more concentrated studies of this nature in the future.

The explosive Web growth in the last decade has drastically changed the way billions of people all around the globe conduct numerous activities including creating, sharing, and consuming information. The massive amount of user-generated information encourages companies and service providers to collect users' information and use it in order to better their own goals and then further provide personalized services to users as well. However, the users' information contains their private and sensitive information and can lead to breach of users' privacy. Anonymizing users' information before publishing and using such data is vital in securing their privacy. Due to the many forms of user information (e.g., structural, interactions, etc), different techniques are required for anonymization of users' data. In this thesis, first we discuss different anonymization techniques for various types of user-generated data, i.e., network graphs, web browsing history, and user-item interactions. Our experimental results show the effectiveness of such techniques for data anonymization. Then, we briefly touch on securely and privately sharing information through blockchains.
