In the modern age of marketing and the growing use of influencer marketing, the use of these influencers and social platforms is rapidly evolving. With the rise of TikTok during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, there was a shift as consumers started to prefer short-form video content and new influencers started to gain popularity. The beauty industry in particular had a large increase in marketing as new influencers popped up with a new style, leading to changing consumer desires and attitudes. This case study aims to aid future researchers in understanding a new topic of research in the rapidly changing marketing world. For this study, I defined three subtypes of beauty mega-influencers: first-mover beauty influencers, who have been in the industry for a decade or more, controversial influencers, who actively create content but have problematic pasts, and beauty lifestyle influencers who gained their popularity on TikTok and their styles develop parasocial relationships with their followers. I gathered a sample of sponsored posts on both TikTok and Instagram to look into the effectiveness of each type’s style for marketing use and how consumers reacted to these types of posts. With this sample, I tested how the credibility within each group and as individuals affected consumer attitudes, and which group is the most effective overall in receiving positive attitudes in terms of response to persuasion. This was done by comparing engagement rates and tracking attitudes in each comment section. My findings found that those with all three facets of credibility, knowledge, expertise, and attractiveness, received the best responses from their audience, and this was found mostly within the newer, TikTok-based beauty lifestyle influencers, however, each subtype had different advantages. There was also the unexpected finding of platform difference, and how much effect that had on consumer attitudes overall.

With the acknowledgement of Type 2 Diabetes as a disease that disproportionately affects the Latinx communities, this study is designed to look at the relationship between health literacy and diabetes awareness. This research was conducted using data from Dr. Felipe Castro's previous study on Latino Lifestyles for Diabetes Prevention. Multiple linear regressions were ran to find the correlation between certain measures and diabetes awareness. Major findings included seeing the positive relationship between education and diabetes awareness and the negative correlation between Behavior Intentions Self Monitoring and diabetes awareness. Further studies are required to see how different social factors impact an individual's ability to gain health literacy regarding Type 2 Diabetes.

The 19th century marked a period of transformative global change where various movements sought to shape society in radical ways. One such movement was eugenics, which fostered perceptions of disability that led to the widespread acceptance of involuntary and coerced sterilizations of disabled females in the United States. In the 20th century, politicians employed eugenics to its end, demonstrating the greatest horrors it could hold. This thesis will investigate the rationale behind sterilizations, the evolution of societal attitudes towards disability, and the contemporary role of guardianships in medical decision-making processes through the theoretical lenses of critical disability studies, the models of disability, and the moral principles of bioethics – justice, autonomy, and nonmaleficence. Findings indicate that individuals with disabilities may need additional support in the medical decision-making process, and while historically guardianships have been used to achieve this, they should be a last resort if the individual has the competence necessary to partake in collaborative decision-making with the support of a third-party, particularly in instances that involve the irreversible procedure of sterilization.

In recent years, diversity and inclusion has become the focus of every company and business in the world due to the rising societal pressure of avoiding being “canceled”. In America, the unfortunate truth is that healthcare is a business, and it is not exempt from feeling these societal pressures, and although strides are being made in a positive direction, racism is a systemic issue that spans far beyond a change in company culture. Being that skin tone is a pertinent element of racism, one can see how the study of skin, known as dermatology, can easily be influenced by racial discrimination. Throughout this thesis paper, I want to discuss not only the racial disparities in healthcare, but I want to also explore how these disparities impact the patient and provider alike.

This duo thesis is an autoethnography of what it means to be Filipino-American in the United States. Being raised in varying backgrounds yet with the similarity of being Filipino, there are aspects of our lives that are simultaneously similar and different. The goal of this project is the exploration of one’s cultural, familial and personal identities and how they intersect with their individuality and sense of belonging. Through this project, we documented our experience as Filipinos in the United States and our travel back to the Philippines and showcased it through videos. It is a means to document our reflections on this project to share with the Filipino community and individuals who share the same sentiments.

Search Engine Marketing is one of the most commonly utilized digital marketing strategies. However, it is also relatively new and unstudied. A study is necessary to address how consumers are interacting with search engines both organically and through paid sponsored results. First, information must be compiled on what the current industry best practices are when marketing through search engines. This means acquiring data on how marketers are using Search Engine Optimization and Paid Search campaigns to target their customers and potential customers. Next, information must be gathered on what current research exists regarding the consumer behavior of search engines. In other words, how, where, and why are users searching? Finally, a study will be conducted surveying 385 college students to address unanswered questions about how younger generations are searching and where the future of search lies.

Sustainability has become an increasingly important topic in the food service industry, particularly in restaurants as consumers have become increasingly aware of the impact of their choices. Restaurants have many different factors that contribute to climate change, ranging from food waste, purchasing of harmful crop production, and support of cattle products. Many ideas and suggestions have been proposed and pitched to reduce the negative effects the food industry has put on the environment. Common ideas include buying ingredients from local farmers, composting, and offering plant-based products. This paper explores the viability of these solutions, focusing on the perspective of local businesses and how possible these solutions are financially and in practice. To gather a broad perspective on different restaurants and their insights on the challenges that come with sustainable living, exploratory interviews of restaurants were conducted to assess their attitudes towards plant-based meals, sustainably sourced ingredients, and food waste reduction. These interviews helped give a new insight into the attitudes of both restaurant workers and owners towards sustainability and their willingness to pay for sustainable options. The research findings were the responses of restaurant workers and owners from the interview, their attitudes towards sustainability, their ability to invest in sustainable options, and the practicality of popular sustainable living ideas. The results illustrate the subtleties and intricacies of the restaurant industry taking sustainable actions.
