A brief history of the Mediterranean diet and its geographical origins as a meeting point for cultures will guide understanding of the construction of this specific dietary pattern. The nutrients and foods typical of the Mediterranean diet will be outlined as well as their health benefits, allowing for a deeper analysis of the ways in which the Mediterranean diet is associated with reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases. The lifestyle choices and physical activity practiced adjacently to the diet will establish the positive synergistic effects of conviviality and moderate exercise on general human health. Contemporary movements in the Mediterranean region, like Slow Foods, aim to preserve traditional dietary and lifestyle choices. In comparison, the U.S. food system seems to be most shaped by the influences of globalization and industrialization. Economic and health-cost perspectives as well as the role of modern-day media in diet trends, body image, and food marketing will establish and deepen the complexities of food choices and health disparities in Western societies. The diagnosis of the Mediterranean Diet in the U.S. as a solution to poor general population health will be challenged and holistic perspectives on eating will provide an exploratory lens for understanding health and food choice as a modern-day consumer.

In September 2022, production company Netflix released their limited series Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, a series that focuses on the life and crimes of infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Shortly thereafter the series would become one of the most successful series in Netflix history. However, this popularity did not come without extensive criticism from viewers, critics, and family members of Dahmer’s victims. This project seeks to evaluate the mass appeal of Netflix’s Dahmer through the theoretical framework of Carl Jung’s collective unconscious and the shadow archetype. Scholars have previously tried to explain the appeal of true crime as a genre without reaching a consensus. This project analyzes the existing explanations for the appeal of true crime along with why these explanations are unsatisfactory when seeking to explain the appeal of Dahmer, followed with an analysis of how the shadow engages with Netflix’s Dahmer through the ability to become secondarily conscious through Dahmer and the projection of one’s shadow qualities onto Dahmer.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether athletes were impacted by wearing a mask and playing competitively, by measuring their mental skills (confidence, anxiety, and focus) levels. This study surveyed 7 high school students who played sports in the year 2020-2021. They were surveyed using the “state sport confidence inventory”, “sport competition anxiety test”, and a created focus survey (Appendix D). The participants were asked a series of questions reflecting back on before wearing a mask and questions pertaining to how they feel about wearing a mask in sports. The survey asked the participants specifically about their mental skills. These mental skills are important factors in optimal performance of an athlete, athletes should have high confidence, low anxiety, and high focus levels (Lautenbach et al., 2016). The results showed that athletes had high confidence, low anxiety, and high focus; athletes were more worried about getting the proper amount of oxygen and fixing their mask. This suggests that the athletes who participated in the survey were mentally tough (Bédard Thom et al., 2021) and resilient (Sarkar & Fletcher, 2014).

Mast cells are granulated immune cells with a known role in allergies due to the mediators they release upon activation, for example histamine, leukotrienes, prostaglandins, TNF-α, IL-6, and MCP-1 . Environmental factors like nutrient availability can impact the survival, proliferation and activation of these cells. In this study, we investigated whether fasting induced by reducing the amount of nutrient source, FBS (fetal bovine serum) affects the allergic activation of mast cells. To accomplish this, mature bone marrow-derived mast cells were incubated in media containing different concentrations of FBS overnight along with anti-DNP IgE. The cells were stimulated with DNP-BSA (the antigen) and the activation of cells was quantified using ELISA (for TNF-α and IL-6). Results showed that fasting state prevented TNF-α and IL-6 production in a dose dependent manner, suggesting that fasting state prevents allergic activation of mast cells. Therefore, it can be concluded that a nutrient factor present in the FBS serum contributes to mast cell activation upon allergen challenge. The understanding of the precise mechanisms underlying prevention of mast cell activation to allergens will highlight new therapeutic avenues for hypersensitivities.

Sex education curricula often do not discuss topics of pleasure and pain, thus perpetuating a cycle of stigma within intimate partnerships. Sex education curricula often do not discuss topics of pleasure and pain, thus perpetuating a cycle of stigma within intimate partnerships. This thesis examines the current research surrounding conversations about pleasure and pain within interpersonal relationships and comprehensive sex education curricula. Interviews were conducted with upper-class undergraduate women at Arizona State University about their sex education history and how this impacted their knowledge and perceptions of sexual pleasure and pain. The interviews also focused on how pleasure and pain have impacted a woman’s sexuality and intimacy both personally and with a partner. This study found that women value sexually fulfilling lives with the absence of pain; however, the sex education they were given did not provide them with the confidence or language to discuss pleasure and pain with their partners. These findings allow for recommendations for developmentally appropriate sex education programs that focus on encouragement and teach women to confidently discuss their pleasure and pain with their partners to ensure they feel safe, comfortable, and fulfilled during sex.

This research paper examines the impact of journaling on anxiety and team cohesion on a women’s beach volleyball team (n=12). Each athlete was given a 30-Day Reset Journal to complete and asked to complete a mid and end of program survey assessing their anxiety and team cohesion levels. The team head coach (n=1) was asked to have weekly discussions with the team about the journal and respond to a mid and end of program survey assessing if they perceived their team was benefiting from the journal. Athlete anxiety results were broken into four categories: Total Anxiety (p value: 0.40), Worry Score (p value: 0.41), Concentration Disruption Score (p value: 0.82), and Somatic Trait Score (p value: 0.20). Team cohesion results were displayed in five categories: Total Team Cohesion (p value: 0.46), Purpose and Goals (p value: 0.17), Team Relationships (p value: 0.26), Problem Solving (p value: 0.85), and Skills and Learning (p value: 0.47). Although anxiety scores did overall decrease, the data reflected no significant difference between the middle and end surveys. Team cohesion results also displayed decreases with no significant difference between the two surveys. Throughout the study, only four statements within the survey displayed significant change between mid and end program surveys (three anxiety and one team cohesion). Though results were not found to be significant, this study provides some insight into the potential benefits journaling can offer athletes in lowering their anxiety and how placing an emphasis on team discussion with a focus on goal development and shared purpose can increase team cohesion.

Romantic relationship research has focused on various characteristics of individual and partner dynamics including intimacy and trust which are important aspects of relationship success. High levels of intimacy in relationships is associated with commitment, passion, psychosocial identity, and lower self-consciousness. Similarly, trust involves the perception of stability and consistency in partner behavior that is in accordance with one’s best interests. Another aspect of romantic relationships that has been heavily researched is attachment style which has been shown to strongly influence how partners behave in relationships. Couples that face relationship challenges have been found to benefit from dance and movement therapy. Current research does not investigate the interactions of all of these facets of relationships and how they might be improved. Therefore, the present study strives to explore how established research on trust, intimacy, and attachment style can be used to improve relationships in the context of dance and movement. The experimental group consisted of 7 couples who participated in partnership dance lessons over the course of one month. The control group consisted of 9 couples who did not participate in the classes. We predicted that partnership dance classes would increase intimacy and trust in couples. We also investigated how attachment style might be implicated in this change. Results show a significant increase in intimacy for participants in the experimental group who participated in partnership dance classes. There was no significant increase in trust. While some participants did change attachment style throughout the study, the majority of participants retained their attachment style from the beginning of the study. Future research should focus on what types of dance are most beneficial for romantic couples, coding participant emotions during the dance class, and how the approach to teaching impacts participants’ experience.
