The United Nations identified global warming and climate change as the biggest challenge in modern human development. The reduction in the use of petroleum and oil will be a necessary step in the advancement for every industry using petroleum products. The engineered Escherichia coli strain M0158 produces malate, a food additive and cosmetic chemical. The bioreactor in this study uses carbon dioxide (CO2) delivered through hollow-fiber membranes (HFMs) to dissolve the gas efficiently into the growth solution, eliminating the conventional need for direct bicarbonate supplementation. The current mass balance assumes 100% of the CO2 into the solution was being fixed to the product and standing in the growth solution, or there was no CO2 moving out of the system without being utilized. A system of iterative experimentation was set up to measure the CO2 concentration and flow rate in the outlet gas. In the first iteration of the design, an Arduino microcontroller, a SprintIR-6S-5 CO2 sensor, and a flow rate sensor were used to measure these values at the outlet gas stream. Through the experimentation, the design removed the flow rate sensor at the outlet and added an argon sweep gas controlled with a mass flow controller (MFC). The sensor setup was assessed for its reliability and consistency over a 24-hour long experiment to understand if it could function continuously throughout a 6-day fermentation experiment. Then, characterization curves quantify the amount of CO2 that leaves the system without bacterial consumption and these curves were measured for 8, 10, and 12 HFMs in an abiotic system. Lastly, a bioreactor with active cells was fit with the sensor system and measured for 3 days continuously with 10 HFMs. The results of this final experiment begin to show the consumption rates of the bacteria and quantify the CO2 lost from the system. With this data and further experimentation with other HFM setups and bacteria, the loss of CO2 in membrane bioreactor systems can be quantified and the overall sustainability can be measured.

Global, historical, political, and economic factors demand that we pay close attention to the diplomatic ties between the United States and Taiwan. The recent more aggressive foreign policy of the People's Republic of China (PRC) directed at unification with Taiwan makes consideration of the implications increasingly important. This is especially so, given that Taiwan, despite its significant contributions to global affairs and its democratic achievements, has faced unique challenges in securing formal diplomatic recognition from major world powers. My thesis addresses this issue by employing the innovative concept of an integrated country strategy. An integrated country strategy, from the perspective of the U.S. Department of State, is a holistic plan that combines diplomatic, economic, and development efforts to achieve strategic objectives in a specific country or region. For this thesis, the specific mission goals of the integrated country strategy will be related to economics, people-to-people diplomacy, and bolstering Taiwan's international presence. Each mission goal will be covered in their own chapter. The aim is to empower broader diplomatic engagement while deterring potential Chinese intervention in Taiwan and maintaining the status quo of the one China policy. Analyzing the potential benefits of this integrated country strategy provides an opportunity to address the challenges of recognizing the One China status quo while raising the cost for President Xi Jinping of unification by force of coercion. The American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) emerges as a central player in this narrative, tasked with supporting Taiwan's self-defense, fostering cooperation, and safeguarding U.S. interests. AIT operates within a unique policy and legal framework, reflecting the nuanced diplomatic landscape surrounding Taiwan. At its core, my thesis underscores the shared values of democracy, human rights, and the rule of law that bind the United States and Taiwan together. By exploring strategic cooperation, diplomatic initiatives, and resilience-building efforts, my thesis aims to offer insights into how the United States can bolster Taiwan's global standing while navigating complex geopolitical challenges. Mission Statement: To secure U.S. foreign interests by advancing diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations with Taiwan, thereby promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region. To secure U.S. foreign interests through U.S.-Taiwan ties by advancing diplomatic, economic, and people-to-people relations, thus promoting stability in the Indo-Pacific region.

With a recent boom in the popularity of Large Language Model (LLM) chatbots such as ChatGPT, the generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) landscape has seen a massive increase in market size. Along with this boom in generative AI, other sectors of AI have seen massive growth as well. One such area of interest is the Edge AI software market. Because this market is so new, there is an immense amount of room for growth and profit since most firms have yet to obtain a firm foothold in this space. Therefore, it makes sense that Company X is seeking to enter this market. With the successful release of Product O, an open-source AI development and optimization program, and Product G, a program for the development and deployment of computer vision models, Company X is seeking to understand the market landscape, overall potential returns, and broad applications for contingency in various scenarios before making further investments into this market. Through our in-depth analysis of the market, which examines current competitors, and includes top-down and bottoms-up analyses, we were able to create a detailed picture of potential market states, their effects on our recommendation, and the initial outlay needed for Company X to actively pursue our recommendation. As for our final recommendation, we believe that Company X should continue to market Product O to draw users into Company X’s hardware ecosystem, similar to what Apple did with the iPhone, which will allow Company X to obtain a greater market share and long-term user loyalty. Software-hardware synergies will continue to drive an increase in Company X’s overall profits. This secondary source of hardware sales will be insulated from the cyclical nature of the CPU market, allowing for less variability in revenues during market downturns. This decrease in the hardware sales cycle should lead to higher stock prices and increase stakeholder confidence. Successful implementation of these strategies boosts the success of future Company X product launches and stops any competitors from entering the market, solidifying Company X’s hold on its market share.

Although previous work on body image was centered around women, recently there has been research done including male body image perception. The purpose of this paper is to see the affects of social media on male body image and how this aspect interplays within gym culture. This study specifically examines the impact of social media on the perspective of males and their body, as well as its potential influence on their mental well-being. It also looked at if men were taking any steps to improve their mental health. Overall, the study found that social media plays a different role then anticipated towards male body image perception and mental health. Many viewed it as a source of inspiration and motivation rather than a source of discomfort for their own personal body image perception.

In this project, I worked with Innovation Space and Keep Tempe Beautiful to help design a Zero Waste Music Festival called Tempe City Roots. I worked with an interdisciplinary team to research, design and prototype two main ideas to help give Tempe City Roots the push it would need to get the festival started. My team and I chose to design a recyclable cups system where festival attendees would be able to use one reusable aluminum cups throughout the festival and wash them when desired. The cups would also serve as souvenirs after the festival if attendees desired. We also designed a transportation system by partnering with the ASU shuttle system and Valley Metro to allow sustainable transportation from across Arizona to Tempe.

Sustainability is an unloaded word, in a dire world. It often lacks the backbone to stand firm against the groups that manipulate its meaning to their own ends. Yet it is the foundation I, and the four interviewees from this project, build our livelihoods on. This work distills the definitions, model cases, strategies, and assumptions that comprise a successful sustainable business through narrative retellings. Collected by semi structured long form interviews, these conversations offer real world implications of strategic sustainability practice on health, happiness, and prosperity in communities- locally and globally.
