Abstract: With the advent of the prophet Muhammad in the seventh century CE, Arabia was unified under a single state. Such a historical development is essential to understand and appreciate. The life and career of the Prophet has been analyzed by both Muslims and non-Muslims alike. There is generally a lot of overlap between both groups of interpretations. However, the hierarchy of contributing factors to the unification of Arabia remains controversial. In my thesis, I put forth the significance of the Islamic religious teachings in this process of unification and centralization of power.

Whether we like it or not, we all have questions. What is being human? We use different responses for the same questions, using tools like religion, science, art and magic to make sense of our little existence. Everyone sees it. Everyone feels it. Everyone knows it. So, what is it?

Whether we like it or not, we all have questions. What is being human? We use different responses for the same questions, using tools like religion, science, art and magic to make sense of our little existence. Everyone sees it. Everyone feels it. Everyone knows it. So, what is it? In this podcast, I will review the major players and theories involved in five areas of philosophy: existentialism, ethics, epistemology, aesthetics and metaphysics. Through subsequent interviews with community connections, ASU professors and students, we will discuss and highlight how philosophical principles are present in all areas of life, as well as how knowledge of these principles can provide a more informed perspective on the world around us.

Because of the necessarily interwoven nature of existence and the human person’s formation in the image and likeness of God, one inherently has enough in common with any other in order to behold him/her properly. Such an interaction increases the beholder's proximity to both the beheld and God simultaneously; it enables one to briefly glimpse these pieces of reality as God Himself does. Such a claim falls primarily under Saint Thomas Aquinas’s foundation of creation (especially his fusion of Plato’s idea of participation and Aristotle’s concept of act and potency, resulting in his own contribution of esse and essence) and Saint Augustine’s concept of the human person. This remains true even under the pressing weight of liberalistic divisiveness and such potent objects as those raised by Muriel Rukeyser’s “Effort at Speech Between Two People,” Victor Hugo’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and Mary Shelley’s "Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus.”

In the developed world, we often take the positive correlation between openness to trade and development for granted. After all, the world has seen the greatest amount of economic growth ever in this relatively short period of time in which global markets have been very accessible. There can be many factors attributed to this perspective on the near-universal association between trade and wealth, such as its simple, intuitive reasoning, a historical drive for developed nations to seek out beneficial trade opportunities, or perhaps even a general lack of awareness when it comes to how such enterprising attitudes may impact those living in entirely different civilizations. Whatever the reasoning may be, the reality is that global trade or openness to it is not as cut and dry as many would like to believe, nor does trade openness come as freely as one might expect, as certain conditions are needed in order to foster access to well-developed markets. It has been observed recently that the cost of doing trade, so to speak, has been increasing globally as certain state and nonstate actors push against the free trade model developed by the United States after World War II. It is with this challenge in mind that we explore the recent changes in the balance of global power dynamics that have led to a decline in the openness of the globalized economy. Saying this, we are not advocating for an end to "globalization", rather, this paper is meant to observe multiple potential frustrations to the current economic global order and the resulting fallout of trade among the world’s top economies.

This project examines entry-level processors for Company X. Analyzing their current position and creating recommendations for their future positioning in regard to entry-level processors. Utilizing financial models, our group worked to determine the most effective way to optimize NPV and gross margin for this segment. With extensive step models and sensitivity analysis, we analyzed potential paths that Company X could take. Continuing to be mindful of the limitations that certain projected paths would entail. Through our analysis, we were able to form a comprehensive suggestion that had a positive 8-year NPV and an improved gross margin percentage.

Chisholm’s contrary-to-duty paradox raises important questions for formulating instances of conditional obligation. Chisholm’s contrary-to-duty paradox raises important questions for formulating instances of conditional obligation. Angelika Kratzer is one linguist whose theories offer some solutions to these questions; more generally, she provides theories for how we should represent modals, conditionals, and other features of language in terms of functions. Though her theories are incredibly useful, they do not adequately represent the Chisholm scenario as a whole. In this paper, I attempt to address this shortcoming in her theory. First, I present and explain some of Kratzer’s main ideas. Then, I explain how her theory offers a solution to Chisholm’s Paradox, and examine a shortcoming of her theory as presented– specifically, the fact that her theory does not account for the importance of different norms in relation to each other. Finally, with the Chisholm situation as a backdrop, I offer my own contribution to her theory. Namely, I propose assigning an importance “score” to each norm, and factoring that “score” into the machinery of Kratzer’s theory.

3D printing has been taking the world by storm for a couple of decades because of the benefits to increase efficiency in testing and part manufacturing. For a large university, serving a large population and promoting projects related to maker spaces, it is necessary to have a 3D printing lab

3D printing has been taking the world by storm for a couple of decades because of the benefits to increase efficiency in testing and part manufacturing. For a large university, serving a large population and promoting projects related to maker spaces, it is necessary to have a 3D printing lab which can effectively manage student and faculty 3D print requests. At the Arizona State University (ASU) print lab there is an efficiency issue which forces all employees of the lab to manage the printing process basically manually. Employees review the list of requests, download individual print files, and then try to fit them onto a print bed of a 3D printer. Downloading individual files causes the employees' computers to become burdened with several files that they do not need and slows down the 3D print job processing pipeline. Downloading and sorting through files is time consuming and employees spend most of their time in the lab trying to figure out what can fit on a print bed instead of fixing printing issues. If the employees had a way to automate some of this process it would allow for employees to handle more difficult work in the lab in a timely manner. This thesis creates a way for employees at the ASU 3D print lab to easily fill a print bed of a 3D printer without looking at each print part file individually improving the efficiency issue in the lab. This thesis uses a greedy algorithm by the press of a button to sort through the submitted print jobs to fill the print bed of each printer effectively and efficiently. The use of an algorithm reduces the time for employees to process print jobs which allows for employees to tackle harder problems.
