Highly culturally-embedded elements of language like linguistic style and norms of formality and informality can pose a challenge for translators. Theorists of translation studies have historically considered the field of audiovisual translation in particular as a culturally homogenizing institution due to the strong commercial forces surrounding production of audiovisual translation. In this thesis, I discuss how speakers of French use lexical items to index linguistic formality and informality as an element of style. Style itself is a dynamic and continually innovative tool available to speakers to express identity and positionality of the speaker as well as attitudes toward their interlocutors. In French film and television, these stylistic features are critical to character identity-building and storytelling. In this thesis, I analyze France.tv Slash’s teen drama, Skam France (2018-2023), to explore how independent fan translators tackle complex translational issues of culture and linguistic style and how their choices influence meaning-making in narrative television. Ultimately, despite its drawbacks and complications, the collaborative, decentralized, and reciprocal nature of the fansubbing model reveals new potentialities in the form and function of audiovisual translation.

By delving into the personal diaries and memoirs of this iconic director and drawing from a rich array of essays, articles, and interviews found in the pages of Cahiers du Cinéma and Revue du Cinéma, this study seeks to unravel the intricate web of influences and ideological connections that link the two cinematic movements. Sergei Eisenstein, a pioneering figure in Soviet film, is examined in the context of his most prominent cinematic works, including "Battleship Potemkin" and "October." By scrutinizing Eisenstein's theories on montage and the dialectical synthesis of images, this paper uncovers the profound impact of his ideas on the aesthetics and narrative strategies employed by the directors of the French New Wave. This study determines if principles of embodied cognition can be used to enhance the teaching of self-regulation skills in a sample of preschoolers. The current research replicates Conway and McKinney (2022). In the replication study, 15 participants were recruited at ASU’s Child Study Lab (CSL) for a total of 39 participants (when combined with Conway and McKinney) ages three to six, across the entire experiment. The combined results of both the original study and the replicated study are reported. The participants were matched on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test (PPVT) scores and one from each pair was randomly placed in the embodied group and the other was placed in the traditional group. The structure of the experiment had two phases, with four lesson plans each; the first focuses on sequential thought, and the second focuses on impulse control and how that could relate to emotions (i.e., self-regulation). Because the sequential thought pattern (First, Next, Last) resembles self-monitoring via impulse control (Stop and Think), we expected the sequential thought pattern to transfer across the phases. In Phase 1 of the experiment, the embodied group received four embodied lesson plans (i.e., with physical manipulable items) and the traditional group received four traditional, two-dimensional style lesson plans (i.e., flipbook with pictures). In Phase 2 of the experiment, each participant received four traditional-style impulse control lesson plans. The hypothesis for this study is that the embodied condition would see an increase in overall net scores in Phase 1 and 2 of the experiment compared to the traditional condition. The researchers conducted a two-way factorial ANOVA to analyze both group pre- and post-test scores. While there was no evidence that the effect of condition, either embodied or traditional, influenced pre- and post-test scores, there was evidence that the participants learned in the experiment. This experiment may need to be modified to have more lesson plans and be replicated with a larger sample size to determine any statistically significant effect.

Through examining several distinct categories of fictional animal portrayal (animals in roles of leading protagonists and antagonists, anthropomorphized animals, human characters who are associated with animals, animal symbolism and motifs, and depictions of nature as a whole unified entity), the specific mechanisms which cause a portrayal to have a greater or weaker impact on real-world perceptions are identified, as well as the motives behind these mechanisms and how they are used to both aid and harm animal conservation outlooks.

The objective of this project is to determine whether a finite-element model can predict the threshold temperatures at which mechanical failure will occur in perovskite-silicon tandem modules. No such computational thermomechanical analysis has been performed on perovskite-silicon tandem modules. Previous literature has demonstrated the effectiveness of finite element methods in predicting cracking of perovskites under bending loads and for characterizing the thermomechanical behavior of solar photovoltaic devices. This work computationally synthesizes these two research areas to determine design criteria for mechanically robust next-generation tandem photovoltaic devices and modules.
