The act of writing music criticism comes with numerous difficulties inherently involved in describing the ineffable qualities of audio in the medium of the written word. My music criticism podcast, Here and Now with Steve Jozef, offers a method of reviewing albums that sidesteps these problems by interweaving the criticism with clips of the songs discussed. This format holds the critic accountable to root their opinion in tangible components in the music, and makes clear the direct line between the qualities of the music at hand and the reviewer's verdict on that music. I wrote, recorded, edited, and distributed 13 episodes of the podcast over the course of six months; I've selected four of those episodes to represent my work for the purposes of the thesis. Their scripts, as well as links to the full episodes, are included with this paper. In addition, I thoroughly researched modern academic thought on the nature, purpose, and future of popular music criticism. This research helped me refine a conception of my ideal theoretical audience for the podcast, forced me to confront and assess my music evaluation criteria through various lenses, and develop the goal of creating a pattern of empathetic listening amongst my listeners. Over the course of developing the project, I ran into several obstacles in using copyrighted material on the show without permission from the copyright holders. Thus the podcast also became a case study in evaluating modern copyright law and its application, and demonstrating what needs to change about both for music criticism to sustain in this form.

There is a disconnect between the way people are taught to find success and happiness, and the results observed. Society teaches us that success will lead to happiness. Instead, it is argued that success is engrained in happiness. Case studies of four, established, successful people: Jack Ma, Elon Musk, Ricardo Semler, and William Gore, have been conducted in order to observe an apparent pattern. This data, coupled with the data from Michael Boehringer's story, is used to formulate a solution to the proposed problem. Each case study is designed to observe characteristics of the individuals that allow them to be successful and exhibit traits of happiness. Happiness will be analyzed in terms of passion and desire to perform consistently. Someone who does what they love, paired with the ability to perform on a regular basis, is considered to be a happy person. The data indicates that there is an observable pattern within the results. From this pattern, certain traits have been highlighted and used to formulate guidelines that will aid someone falling short of success and happiness in their lives. The results indicate that there are simple questions that can guide people to a happier life. Three basic questions are defined: is it something you love, can you see yourself doing this every day and does it add value? If someone can answer yes to all three requirements, the person will be able to find happiness, with success following. These guidelines can be taken and applied to those struggling with unhappiness and failure. By creating such a formula, the youth can be taught a new way of thinking that will help to eliminate these issues, that many people are facing.

The purpose of our research was to develop recommendations and/or strategies for Company A's data center group in the context of the server CPU chip industry. We used data collected from the International Data Corporation (IDC) that was provided by our team coaches, and data that is accessible on the internet. As the server CPU industry expands and transitions to cloud computing, Company A's Data Center Group will need to expand their server CPU chip product mix to meet new demands of the cloud industry and to maintain high market share. Company A boasts leading performance with their x86 server chips and 95% market segment share. The cloud industry is dominated by seven companies Company A calls "The Super 7." These seven companies include: Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Alibaba, Tencent, and Baidu. In the long run, the growing market share of the Super 7 could give them substantial buying power over Company A, which could lead to discounts and margin compression for Company A's main growth engine. Additionally, in the long-run, the substantial growth of the Super 7 could fuel the development of their own design teams and work towards making their own server chips internally, which would be detrimental to Company A's data center revenue. We first researched the server industry and key terminology relevant to our project. We narrowed our scope by focusing most on the cloud computing aspect of the server industry. We then researched what Company A has already been doing in the context of cloud computing and what they are currently doing to address the problem. Next, using our market analysis, we identified key areas we think Company A's data center group should focus on. Using the information available to us, we developed our strategies and recommendations that we think will help Company A's Data Center Group position themselves well in an extremely fast growing cloud computing industry.

Transient Receptor Potential (TRP) ion channels are a diverse family of nonselective, polymodal sensors in uni- and multicellular eukaryotes that are implicated in an assortment of biological contexts and human disease. The cold-activated TRP Melastatin-8 (TRPM8) channel, also recognized as the human body's primary cold sensor, is among the few TRP channels responsible for thermosensing. Despite sustained interest in the channel, the mechanisms underlying TRPM8 activation, modulation, and gating have proved challenging to study and remain poorly understood. In this thesis, I offer data collected on various expression, extraction, and purification conditions tested in E. Coli expression systems with the aim to optimize the generation of a structurally stable and functional human TRPM8 pore domain (S5 and S6) construct for application in structural biology studies. These studies, including the biophysical technique nuclear magnetic spectroscopy (NMR), among others, will be essential for elucidating the role of the TRPM8 pore domain in in regulating ligand binding, channel gating, ion selectively, and thermal sensitivity. Moreover, in the second half of this thesis, I discuss the ligation-independent megaprimer PCR of whole-plasmids (MEGAWHOP PCR) cloning technique, and how it was used to generate chimeras between TRPM8 and its nearest analog TRPM2. I review steps taken to optimize the efficiency of MEGAWHOP PCR and the implications and unique applications of this novel methodology for advancing recombinant DNA technology. I lastly present preliminary electrophysiological data on the chimeras, employed to isolate and study the functional contributions of each individual transmembrane helix (S1-S6) to TRPM8 menthol activation. These studies show the utility of the TRPM8\u2014TRPM2 chimeras for dissecting function of TRP channels. The average current traces analyzed thus far indicate that the S2 and S3 helices appear to play an important role in TRPM8 menthol modulation because the TRPM8[M2S2] and TRPM8[M2S3] chimeras significantly reduce channel conductance in the presence of menthol. The TRPM8[M2S4] chimera, oppositely, increases channel conductance, implying that the S4 helix in native TRPM8 may suppress menthol modulation. Overall, these findings show that there is promise in the techniques chosen to identify specific regions of TRPM8 crucial to menthol activation, though the methods chosen to study the TRPM8 pore independent from the whole channel may need to be reevaluated. Further experiments will be necessary to refine TRPM8 pore solubilization and purification before structural studies can proceed, and the electrophysiology traces observed for the chimeras will need to be further verified and evaluated for consistency and physiological significance.

Netflix has positioned itself at the forefront of the future of television with its original programming, which has been rolled out in greater and more frequent amounts just in the last couple of years. The streaming service has already experimented with creativity in ways most other shows and creators haven't, playing with the pacing of overall seasons as well as the length of episodes. So, too, Netflix has been at the forefront of increasing visibility for minority characters on television. Many of its shows incorporate racially diverse casts and depict lots of LGBTQ characters, a refreshingly realistic view of the world that many of its viewers have always lived in but haven't yet witnessed on television. Visibility and representation are critical concepts for analyzing minority characters on television. It is important for diverse characters to be seen, first and foremost, but also to be seen in positive or at least realistic lights. Care must be taken to avoid fulfilling stereotypes or tropes, and attention must be paid to what has happened to other characters who have come before. However, many of Netflix's portrayals of these characters, particularly bisexual characters, leave much to be desired. With the original dramas House of Cards, Hemlock Grove, Orange is the New Black, and Sense8, all of which include characters who identify as or behave bisexually, Netflix has been reluctant to use the specific word bisexual to describe characters, and many don't even identify their sexuality with a synonym for the term. Many of the bisexual characters that I identified died or were killed on the shows, and nearly all of them fulfilled stereotypes or tropes in some way. There were multiple scenes of threesomes or other distinctly kinky sexual encounters, which served to exoticize bisexuality and distance it from the more normatively viewed identities of heterosexuality and homosexuality. Ultimately, while Netflix's original programming has offered increased visibility to bisexual characters, it has yet to reflect the real community it seeks to portray. In particular, Netflix's refusal to label characters as bisexual is frustrating and limiting. It can be argued that this is a progressive move toward more ideas of sexual fluidity and a post-modern lack of sexual labels, but there are not enough depictions of identified bisexual characters on television yet for this to make sense. Until bisexual characters and their identities are not invisibilized or stigmatized, more work has to be done to ensure that bisexual people are represented fairly and accurately on television and in all media.

This is a constructed language made for fictional creatures that will be featured in a novel. The creatures are feral goblins, and they are based on Irish mythology. The novel that the goblins and the language will be featured in is titled MaddConn, and it was written by Jon Bendera. It is an urban fantasy novel. The goblins have a language in the novel because there are a number of goblin characters throughout the story. One of the main characters, Maddi, has to survive amongst the feral goblins for a portion of the novel while another main character, Connor, works his way to her. She has multiple close encounters with them, and also has to find her way around their territory, so she comes into contact with the language many times. Although the language in the story was created to have developed prior to humanity, this constructed language was made to look somewhat similar to human language. As it will be involved in fiction that will be read by humans, it needs to be easily understood by humans. The language reveals features of the goblin culture and anatomy. For instance, it can be seen in the language that their shallow, wide mouths and thin lips influence their phonology. Their physiology influences much of their language. Likewise, they have three fingers on each hand, which influences their number system. As the goblins and their language developed before humans and because they are not human creatures, the typology and word order do not follow all of the correlations found in human languages. All in all, the lexicon includes many words that have to do with three of their favorite things: violence, food, and work.

As mobile devices have risen to prominence over the last decade, their importance has been increasingly recognized. Workloads for mobile devices are often very different from those on desktop and server computers, and solutions that worked in the past are not always the best fit for the resource- and energy-constrained computing that characterizes mobile devices. While this is most commonly seen in CPU and graphics workloads, this device class difference extends to I/O as well. However, while a few tools exist to help analyze mobile storage solutions, there exists a gap in the available software that prevents quality analysis of certain research initiatives, such as I/O deduplication on mobile devices. This honors thesis will demonstrate a new tool that is capable of capturing I/O on the filesystem layer of mobile devices running the Android operating system, in support of new mobile storage research. Uniquely, it is able to capture both metadata of writes as well as the actual written data, transparently to the apps running on the devices. Based on a modification of the strace program, fstrace and its companion tool fstrace-replay can record and replay filesystem I/O of actual Android apps. Using this new tracing tool, several traces from popular Android apps such as Facebook and Twitter were collected and analyzed.

A specific species of the genus Geobacter exhibits useful electrical properties when processing a molecule often found in waste water. A team at ASU including Dr Cèsar Torres and Dr Sudeep Popat used that species to create a special type of solid oxide fuel cell we refer to as a microbial fuel cell. Identification of possible chemical processes and properties of the reactions used by the Geobacter are investigated indirectly by taking measurements using Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy of the electrode-electrolyte interface of the microbial fuel cell to obtain the value of the fuel cell's complex impedance at specific frequencies. Investigation of the multiple polarization processes which give rise to measured impedance values is difficult to do directly and so examination of the distribution function of relaxation times (DRT) is considered instead. The DRT is related to the measured complex impedance values using a general, non-physical equivalent circuit model. That model is originally given in terms of a Fredholm integral equation with a non-square integrable kernel which makes the inverse problem of determining the DRT given the impedance measurements an ill-posed problem. The original integral equation is rewritten in terms of new variables into an equation relating the complex impedance to the convolution of a function based upon the original integral kernel and a related but separate distribution function which we call the convolutional distribution function. This new convolutional equation is solved by reducing the convolution to a pointwise product using the Fourier transform and then solving the inverse problem by pointwise division and application of a filter function (equivalent to regularization). The inverse Fourier transform is then taken to get the convolutional distribution function. In the literature the convolutional distribution function is then examined and certain values of a specific, less general equivalent circuit model are calculated from which aspects of the original chemical processes are derived. We attempted to instead directly determine the original DRT from the calculated convolutional distribution function. This method proved to be practically less useful due to certain values determined at the time of experiment which meant the original DRT could only be recovered in a window which would not normally contain the desired information for the original DRT. This limits any attempt to extend the solution for the convolutional distribution function to the original DRT. Further research may determine a method for interpreting the convolutional distribution function without an equivalent circuit model as is done with the regularization method used to solve directly for the original DRT.

A problem of interest in theoretical physics is the issue of the evaporation of black holes via Hawking radiation subject to a fixed background. We approach this problem by considering an electromagnetic analogue, where we have substituted Hawking radiation with the Schwinger effect. We treat the case of massless QED in 1+1 dimensions with the path integral approach to quantum field theory, and discuss the resulting Feynman diagrams from our analysis. The results from this thesis may be useful to find a version of the Schwinger effect that can be solved exactly and perturbatively, as this version may provide insights to the gravitational problem of Hawking radiation.

This creative project consists of three short stories with a common theme of release, letting go, and exhalation. Nymphal Instar is a story about Tommy, a young boy, and his encounter with his uncle, a troubled man who has just returned from war. The story explores the idea of growth and maturation, and the ability to move past and let go of trauma. A Cat Goes Away is about a young man, Richard, who is required to simultaneously deal with the loss of his cat and the suicide attempts of his sister. He also runs into his sister's ex-husband and is forced to deal with him. The story explores the difficulty in recognizing one's own emotions and the importance of knowing the difference between what one can change and what one cannot. Since Diagnosis is a story about Kate, a woman who has just been diagnosed with cancer and who is unable to tell her loved ones. The story explores acceptance and the idea that letting go can allow one to live more fully. Though the three stories are disparate in their characters and events, they share a commonality in their endings and in the final realizations of the characters. There is a focus on the importance of breath and breathing, and the essentiality of acceptance and release.
