Implementing new technologies, better quality control, more research, and standardization of procedures are just a few of the multiple changes that can enhance forensic pathology.

This paper introduces the causes and effects of domestic violence in a general sense, and further focuses on the specific consequences experienced by Latinos of traditional culture in regards to partner abuse. While it is unclear why rates of intimate partner violence are higher for Latinas, their cultural values associated with gender roles and spiritual beliefs are complicating factors that are further magnified by socioeconomic challenges many Latinas experience. This paper examines the interplay between Latino cultural values and intimate partner violence, and highlights the relevance of this knowledge to inform effective social work practice in the Latino community.

In 2012, Chick-fil-A president Dan Cathy's "came out" about his anti-same sex marriage views, launching an enormous negative backlash across social media networks. To counteract this, former governor Mike Huckabee called on his Facebook fans to support the company on "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day," both on Facebook and in person. The project examines both the backlash and Appreciation Day on social media networks. Posts on the Appreciation Day Facebook event page and similar posts on Twitter were first broken down in the framework of supportive and oppositional posts and then analyzed in further contexts. Comments on official Chick-fil-A Facebook statuses were then examined in a similar fashion. The research concludes that a strong support system both online and offline were necessary for Chick-fil-A to recover from its backlash. The controversy that ensued is ultimately a case study in the growing influence of Facebook as a tool for small-scale activism.

About 1% of the United States adult population currently suffers from schizophrenia. The symptoms of schizophrenia can be broken down into three main categories including: positive symptoms such as psychoses, negative symptoms such as anhedonia, and cognitive symptoms such as memory difficulties. The early growth response 3 (Egr3) is part of a family of genes known as the immediate early genes (IEGs), which are zinc-finger transcription factors. IEGs are not protein synthesis dependent, which means that they can be activated quickly, within 30-45 minutes, in response to certain environmental stimuli such as sleep deprivation. Egr3, an activity dependent gene, may be up-regulated by both genetic and environmental cues. Egr3 is thought to play an integral role in a biochemical pathway that may explain the onset of schizophrenia. However, the exact causes of schizophrenia remain unknown. Egr3 is not only activated in response to environmental factors, but has also been linked to many genes that are associated with schizophrenia in humans (Huentelman et al., 2015). Post-mortem brain tissue studies of patients with schizophrenia have decreased levels of EGR3 in their prefrontal cortex (PFC) and mice lacking Egr3 (Egr3 -/-) exhibit schizophrenia-like phenotypes such as locomotor hyperactivity. Egr 3 -/- mice also exhibit a diminished head twitch response to 2,5-Dimethoxy-4-iodoamphetamine (DOI), a 5-HT2A agonist (Yamada, et al., 2007; Gallitano-Mendel, et al., 2008). A link was established between schizophrenia patients and the serotonin 2A receptor (5-HT2AR) upon recognizing that 5-HT2AR agonists like lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) create hallucinations similar to those in schizophrenic patients and 5-HT2AR antagonists such as the second-generation antipsychotic clozapine can reverse those hallucinations (Sommer, 2012). Paradoxically, however, post-mortem studies of schizophrenia patients have actually shown a decrease in PFC 5-HT2ARs as well as a 70% decrease found in the PFC of Egr3 -/- mice (Rasmussen, et al., 2010; Williams, et al., 2012). Therefore, we hypothesize that EGR3 directly regulates expression of 5-HT2ARs. To test this we will use virus-mediated overexpression of 5-HT2ARs in the PFCs of mice to see if we can rescue the schizophrenia-like phenotypes of the Egr3 -/- mice. After bilateral PFC stereotaxic injection of herpes simplex virus (HSV) with enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) or HSV-Htr2a-EGFP in both wild type (WT) and Egr3 -/- mice, the mice were behaviorally tested using locomotor activity and DOI-induced head twitch response. We found that Egr3-/- mice, compared to WT mice, demonstrated locomotor hyperactivity and a decreased DOI-induced head twitch response, confirming prior findings, but no significant main effect of virus. A significant effect of the HSV-Htr2a-EGFP was seen when comparing DOI-induced head twitch response in WT mice to Egr3 -/- mice. WT mice showed a higher number of head twitches in comparison to the knockout mice. These findings suggest further research must be conducted in order to investigate whether a functional 5-HT2AR is being translated and correctly transported to the membrane. These findings may also point to an unknown factor mediating the regulation between Egr3 and 5-HT2ARs.

This project looks at the effects of American sanctions on the Sudanese economy. The purpose of the research is to evaluate the effects of the sanctions on the GDP (based on Purchasing Power Parity) of Sudan using linear regression analysis. We used a linear model to conduct analysis that included variables such as Sudan's trading partners, distance between Sudan and said partners, the GDP of these other countries, and whether there are sanctions imposed. The data collected runs from 1980 to 2011 \u2014 the year South Sudan became independent. The results of the analysis indicate that sanctions are ineffective in achieving their purpose which is ending the human rights violations in Sudan. The findings are consistent with arguments put forth by economics for decades.

Though problem-oriented policing and hot spot policing are both effective modern policing strategies, some critics have argued that the risk of crime displacement can outweigh the returns of hot spot policing, ultimately rendering it inefficacious. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that crime displacement is not only uncommon, but significantly rarer than diffusions of benefits. As diffusion is a desirable side effect of any policing strategy, it follows that police officers should use the phenomenon to their advantage. Using the data and methodologies of a number of hot spot policing studies—especially Koper’s (1995) research on temporal diffusion—this paper proposes a number of simple steps a police department can take to maximize their department’s effectiveness in high-crime areas.

Previous studies exploring variability in sentencing decisions have consistently found gender differences, such that women receive lighter sentences than men. In the proposed study, I present a new framework for understanding gender differences in sentencing preferences, including circumstances under which no gender differences should emerge. The Affordance Management Approach suggests that our minds are attuned to both group- and individual-level threats and opportunities that others afford us. I conceptualize the sentencing difference between men and women as driven by perceived affordances that assist or hinder an individual in achieving certain fundamental goals. When faced with sanctioning an offender in our community, the offender's sex, the victim's age, and environmental variables such as the ratio of men to women may influence our decision-making, because these factors have affordance implications. Thus, I hypothesized that individuals will express differences in the sentencing of offenders who commit assault, and that these differences vary by offender sex, victim age, and sex-ratio. The results indicate that, as predicted, female offenders received lighter sentencing than men when the offender committed an assault against a same-sex adult, but received equally punitive sentences as men when the assault was committed against a child. In general, results do not support a consistent effect of sex ratio as a factor when making sentencing decisions. Although results do not fully support the current study's specific hypotheses, there remains much to be gained from applying an affordance management perspective to understanding variability in sentencing between the sexes.

Home advantage affects the game in almost all team sports across the world. Due to<br/>COVID and all of the precautions being taken to keep games played, more extensive research is able to be conducted about what factors truly go into creating a home advantage. Some common factors of home advantage include the crowd, facility familiarity, and travel. In the English Premier League, there are no fans allowed at any of the games; furthermore, in the NBA, a bubble was created at one neutral venue with no fans in attendance. Even with the NBA being at a neutral site, there was still a “home team” at every game. The sports betting industry struggled due to failing to shift betting lines in accordance with this decreased home advantage. With these leagues removing some of the factors that are frequently associated with home advantage, analysts are able to better see what the results would be of removing these variables. The purpose of this research is to determine if these adjustments made due to COVID had an impact on the home advantage in different leagues around the world, and if they did, to what extent. Individual game data from the past 10 seasons were used for analysis of both the NBA and the Premier League. The results show that there is a significant difference in win percentage between prior seasons and seasons behind closed doors. In addition to win percentage, many other game statistics see a significant shift as well. Overall, the significance of being the home team disappears in games following the COVID-19 break.

Heliobacteria are an anaerobic phototroph that require carbon sources such as pyruvate, <br/>lactate, or acetate for growth (Sattley, et. al. 2008). They are known for having one of the <br/>simplest phototrophic systems, the central component of which is a Type I reaction center (RC) <br/>that pumps protons to generate the electrochemical gradient for making ATP. Heliobacteria <br/>preform cyclic electron flow (CEF) with the RC in the light but can also grow chemotropically in <br/>the dark. Many anaerobes like heliobacteria, such as other members of the class Clostridia, <br/>possess the capability to produce hydrogen via a hydrogenase enzyme in the cell, as protons can <br/>serve as an electron acceptor in anaerobic metabolism. However, the species of heliobacteria <br/>studied here, H. modesticaldum have been seen to produce hydrogen via their nitrogenase <br/>enzyme but not when this enzyme is inactive. This study aimed to investigate if the reason for <br/>their lack of hydrogen production was due to a lack of an active hydrogenase enzyme, possibly <br/>indicating that the genes required for activity were lost by an H. modesticaldum ancestor. This <br/>was done by introducing genes encoding a clostridial [FeFe] hydrogenase from C. thermocellum<br/>via conjugation and measuring hydrogen production in the transformant cells. Transformant cells <br/>produced hydrogen and cells without the genes did not, meaning that the heliobacteria ferredoxin <br/>was capable of donating electrons to the foreign hydrogenase to make hydrogen. Because the <br/>[FeFe] hydrogenase must receive electrons from the cytosolic ferredoxin, it was hypothesized <br/>that hydrogen production in heliobacteria could be used to probe the redox state of the ferredoxin <br/>pool in conditions of varying electron availability. Results of this study showed that hydrogen <br/>production was affected by electron availability variations due to varying pyruvate <br/>concentrations in the media, light vs dark environment, use acetate as a carbon source, and being <br/>provided external electron donors. Hydrogen production, therefore, was predicted to be an <br/>effective indicator of electron availability in the reduced ferredoxin pool.
