Stoicism is a philosophy that emerged in the Hellenistic Age, between 323 BCE and 30 BCE in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (Irvine, 2009). Stoicism was born into an exceptionally transitional social and political time period, and three major philosophers, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, and Epictetus, rose to fame and established this manner of interacting with the world around them. These teachings and writings, still read throughout the world today due to their practicality and effectiveness, provide a major framework for “(It is [Stoicism]) the power of the mind to be unconquerable,” (Seneca, The Stoic Letters). Stoicism can be used as a tool in the pursuit of perseverance, wisdom, self control, and self mastery, which can ultimately lead to a more fulfilling and happy life. This philosophy is a practical one, and is designed with the intention to help those who practice it live well rather than just provide a theoretical understanding of the teaching of the world. Stoicism is a way to interact with others and the world in a way that reduces the amount of suffering experienced and can increase the capacity for joy. As a high achieving college student, it may not be feasible or entirely practical to live as Stoics did in the ancient world. Yet, aspects of ancient Stoicism can still be applied to modern-day living and can be used to make college students more resilient, happier, and allow them to live a fuller, more satisfied life. In this 7 week asynchronous program designed for high achieving college students, we will explore the most common barriers to happiness that college students face and explore what Stoic philosophies offer to help remedy these barriers.

Through interviews with teachers, faculty, and research on ocean literacy and coral reefs, My Coral Reef Booklet assembles various learning activities to cater to students from a variety of education, financial and impairment backgrounds. My Coral Reef Booklet addresses coral reef basics and how students can play their part in coral reef conservation despite their location.

Originally master-planned for white middle-class families, Maryvale has become a majority-minority neighborhood that is still impacted by socioeconomic problems left from the 1980's white flight, as well as a reputation for being dangerous. Residents share their experiences living in the community and their opinions about its problematic reputation and its impact and current development efforts. Oral history brings a personal perspective to the literal history of Maryvale to create a more accurate and comprehensive story.

Understanding the shear strength of soil at different levels of saturation is necessary for various engineering applications, especially in geotechnical and civil engineering projects. The objective of this thesis is to conduct an extensive literature review of the use of geosynthetics to improve the strength of soil material, conduct laboratory testing components to assess the shear strength of soil at different water contents, and participate in the Leadership through Mentoring program to gain mentoring and leadership skills. The laboratory component focuses on analyzing the shear strength of soil samples with different water contents, specifically at 6%, 10%, 12.3%, 15%, 17%, and 19%. The soil-water mixtures were prepared with precision to achieve these specific water contents. Static compaction techniques were then employed to mold the soil samples to desired densities. The experimental setup involved subjecting the molded soil samples to a direct shear test using a direct shear machine. This apparatus allowed for the measurement of normal and shear stress, as well as shear and normal displacements during the testing process. These data were used to determine the cohesion and internal friction characteristics of the soil samples at different degrees of saturation. The results obtained from the direct shear tests revealed valuable insights into the shear strength behavior of the soil under varying saturation levels. The cohesion and internal friction parameters were found to exhibit distinct trends as the water content in the soil changed. The friction angle did not change significantly at different water contents, while the cohesion intercept trend appears to be contradicted the results reported in the literature, as there is a slight increase. The unexpected results might be due to the testing device failing after the third moisture content test. A different approach could have been taken to compact the specimens at optimum moisture content to get the same soil structure for each moisture content. These findings need to be re-evaluated based on the conclusion outlined in this report. Further research in this area could lead to enhanced models and methodologies for predicting soil behavior in real-world scenarios. In addition to the experimental tasks performed, I participated in a program to gain leadership skills through a mentoring format. The goal of the program was to help me understand my strengths and weaknesses to become a better leader. Through interactive assessments, feedback mechanisms, 3 and learning resources, I was able to understand what I was good and bad at. The weekly assessments helped me to constantly be honest with myself and evaluate myself as a student, peer, and leader. The program gave me a graduate student mentor that guided me through the process of learning how to manage projects effectively and understanding how to lead. Through the lessons learned and challenges encountered, I was able to grow and become a more efficient listener as well as analyze information better. These tools helped me to enhance my leadership skills and become a more effective and impactful leader.

InnovationSpace is a Design School program wherein teams of students spend a full year together generating, researching, and prototyping concepts for a sponsor company, which in our case was a local non-profit called Keep Tempe Beautiful. Although InnovationSpace typically entails designing and engineering physical products, Keep Tempe Beautiful took things in a different direction—they wanted our help designing a zero-waste music festival through which they could generate revenue for their park clean-up events. This thesis documents and describes the eight months of work my team undertook, from our earliest brainstorming sessions to our polished proposals, to produce two final concepts: a reusable cup system and alternative attendee transportation. Over the course of two semesters, Team Terøza dove into the literature on zero-waste event planning, generated dozens of both logistical and entertainment-focused concepts, conducted our own surveys and analysis, and progressively culled the herd until only our two best ideas remained to be presented to our colleagues at the end of the year.

This duo thesis is an autoethnography of what it means to be Filipino-American in the United States. Being raised in varying backgrounds yet with the similarity of being Filipino, there are aspects of our lives that are simultaneously similar and different. The goal of this project is the exploration of one’s cultural, familial and personal identities and how they intersect with their individuality and sense of belonging. Through this project, we documented our experience as Filipinos in the United States and our travel back to the Philippines and showcased it through videos. It is a means to document our reflections on this project to share with the Filipino community and individuals who share the same sentiments.

This thesis investigates the extrusion rheology of concrete mixes tailored for 3D printing applications. The study aimed to determine the pressure requirements for maintaining extrusion at various rates using an MTS machine. The experimental approach involved preparing different concrete mixes, filling syringes with them, and measuring the pressure necessary for constant extrusion over the displacement of the syringe's plunger. Special attention was given to minimizing errors, including manual agitation to eliminate air bubbles, precise alignment of syringes in the MTS machine for uniform displacement, and careful rotation and reuse of syringes to ensure consistent damage levels. Lubrication of syringe interiors was employed to reduce friction effects. Despite meticulous experimental procedures, the research encountered a critical issue wherein the rubber stopper reacted with the lubricant, leading to unpredictable inflation. Consequently, no usable data could be collected. This setback underscores the importance of addressing unforeseen technical challenges in experimental setups. Future studies could focus on alternative materials or methodologies to overcome such issues and advance the understanding of concrete extrusion rheology for 3D printing applications.
