The first part describes Metal Semiconductor Field Effect Transistor (MESFET) based fundamental analog building blocks designed and fabricated in a single poly, 3-layer metal digital CMOS technology utilizing fully depletion mode MESFET devices. DC characteristics were measured by varying the power supply from 2.5V to 5.5V. The measured DC transfer curves of amplifiers show good agreement with the simulated ones with extracted models from the same process. The accuracy of the current mirror showing inverse operation is within ±15% for the current from 0 to 1.5mA with the power supply from 2.5 to 5.5V. The second part presents a low-power image recognition system with a novel MESFET device fabricated on a CMOS substrate. An analog image recognition system with power consumption of 2.4mW/cell and a response time of 6µs is designed, fabricated and characterized. The experimental results verified the accuracy of the extracted SPICE model of SOS MESFETs. The response times of 4µs and 6µs for one by four and one by eight arrays, respectively, are achieved with the line recognition. Each core cell for both arrays consumes only 2.4mW. The last part presents a CMOS low-power transceiver in MICS band is presented. The LNA core has an integrated mixer in a folded configuration. The baseband strip consists of a pseudo differential MOS-C band-pass filter achieving demodulation of 150kHz-offset BFSK signals. The SRO is used in a wakeup RX for the wake-up signal reception. The all digital frequency-locked loop drives a class AB power amplifier in a transmitter. The sensitivity of -85dBm in the wakeup RX is achieved with the power consumption of 320µW and 400µW at the data rates of 100kb/s and 200kb/s from 1.8V, respectively. The sensitivities of -70dBm and -98dBm in the data-link RX are achieved with NF of 40dB and 11dB at the data rate of 100kb/s while consuming only 600µW and 1.5mW at 1.2V and 1.8V, respectively.

Micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) demonstrates label-free biosensing capabilities and is considered to be a promising alternative of quartz crystal microbalance (QCM). FBARs achieve great success in vacuum, or in the air, but find limited applications in liquid media because squeeze damping significantly degrades quality factor (Q) and results in poor frequency resolution. A transmission-line model shows that by confining the liquid in a thickness comparable to the acoustic wavelength of the resonator, Q can be considerably improved. The devices exhibit damped oscillatory patterns of Q as the liquid thickness varies. Q assumes its maxima and minima when the channel thickness is an odd and even multiple of the quarter-wavelength of the resonance, respectively. Microfluidic channels are integrated with longitudinal-mode FBARs (L-FBARs) to realize this design; a tenfold improvement of Q over fully-immersed devices is experimentally verified. Microfluidic integrated FBAR sensors have been demonstrated for detecting protein binding in liquid and monitoring the Vroman effect (the competitive protein adsorption behavior), showing their potential as a promising bio-analytical tool. A contour-mode FBAR (C-FBAR) is developed to further improve Q and to alleviate the need for complex integration of microfluidic channels. The C-FBAR consists of a suspended piezoelectric ring made of aluminum nitride and is excited in the fundamental radial-extensional mode. By replacing the squeeze damping with shear damping, high Qs (189 in water and 77 in human whole blood) are obtained in semi-infinite depth liquids. The C-FBAR sensors are characterized by aptamer - thrombin binding pairs and aqueous glycerine solutions for mass and viscosity sensing schemes, respectively. The C-FBAR sensor demonstrates accurate viscosity measurement from 1 to 10 centipoise, and can be deployed to monitor in-vitro blood coagulation processes in real time. Results show that its resonant frequency decreases as the viscosity of the blood increases during the fibrin generation process after the coagulation cascade. The coagulation time and the start/end of the fibrin generation are quantitatively determined, showing the C-FBAR can be a low-cost, portable yet reliable tool for hemostasis diagnostics.

The structural design of pavements in both highways and airfields becomes complex when one considers environmental effects and ground water table variation. Environmental effects have been incorporated on the new Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide (MEPDG) but little has been done to incorporate environmental effects on airfield design. This work presents a developed code produced from this research study called ZAPRAM, which is a mechanistically based pavement model based upon Limiting Strain Criteria in airfield HMA pavement design procedures. ZAPRAM is capable of pavement and airfield design analyses considering environmental effects. The program has been coded in Visual Basic and implemented in an event-driven, user-friendly educational computer program, which runs in Excel environment. Several studies were conducted in order to insure the validity of the analysis as well as the efficiency of the software. The first study yielded the minimum threshold number of computational points the user should use at a specific depth within the pavement system. The second study was completed to verify the correction factor for the Odemark's transformed thickness equation. Default correction factors were included in the code base on a large comparative study between Odemark's and MLET. A third study was conducted to provide a comparison of flexible airfield pavement design thicknesses derived from three widely accepted design procedures used in practice today: the Asphalt Institute, Shell Oil, and the revised Corps of Engineering rutting failure criteria to calculate the thickness requirements necessary for a range of design input variables. The results of the comparative study showed that there is a significant difference between the pavement thicknesses obtained from the three design procedures, with the greatest deviation found between the Shell Oil approach and the other two criteria. Finally, a comprehensive sensitivity study of environmental site factors and the groundwater table depth upon flexible airfield pavement design and performance was completed. The study used the newly revised USACE failure criteria for subgrade shear deformation. The methodology utilized the same analytical methodology to achieve real time environmental effects upon unbound layer modulus, as that used in the new AASHTO MEPDG. The results of this effort showed, for the first time, the quantitative impact of the significant effects of the climatic conditions at the design site, coupled with the importance of the depth of the groundwater table, on the predicted design thicknesses. Significant cost savings appear to be quite reasonable by utilizing principles of unsaturated soil mechanics into the new airfield pavement design procedure found in program ZAPRAM.

With increasing demand for System on Chip (SoC) and System in Package (SiP) design in computer and communication technologies, integrated inductor which is an essential passive component has been widely used in numerous integrated circuits (ICs) such as in voltage regulators and RF circuits. In this work, soft ferromagnetic core material, amorphous Co-Zr-Ta-B, was incorporated into on-chip and in-package inductors in order to scale down inductors and improve inductors performance in both inductance density and quality factor. With two layers of 500 nm Co-Zr-Ta-B films a 3.5X increase in inductance and a 3.9X increase in quality factor over inductors without magnetic films were measured at frequencies as high as 1 GHz. By laminating technology, up to 9.1X increase in inductance and more than 5X increase in quality factor (Q) were obtained from stripline inductors incorporated with 50 nm by 10 laminated films with a peak Q at 300 MHz. It was also demonstrated that this peak Q can be pushed towards high frequency as far as 1GHz by a combination of patterning magnetic films into fine bars and laminations. The role of magnetic vias in magnetic flux and eddy current control was investigated by both simulation and experiment using different patterning techniques and by altering the magnetic via width. Finger-shaped magnetic vias were designed and integrated into on-chip RF inductors improving the frequency of peak quality factor from 400 MHz to 800 MHz without sacrificing inductance enhancement. Eddy current and magnetic flux density in different areas of magnetic vias were analyzed by HFSS 3D EM simulation. With optimized magnetic vias, high frequency response of up to 2 GHz was achieved. Furthermore, the effect of applied magnetic field on on-chip inductors was investigated for high power applications. It was observed that as applied magnetic field along the hard axis (HA) increases, inductance maintains similar value initially at low fields, but decreases at larger fields until the magnetic films become saturated. The high frequency quality factor showed an opposite trend which is correlated to the reduction of ferromagnetic resonant absorption in the magnetic film. In addition, experiments showed that this field-dependent inductance change varied with different patterned magnetic film structures, including bars/slots and fingers structures. Magnetic properties of Co-Zr-Ta-B films on standard organic package substrates including ABF and polyimide were also characterized. Effects of substrate roughness and stress were analyzed and simulated which provide strategies for integrating Co-Zr-Ta-B into package inductors and improving inductors performance. Stripline and spiral inductors with Co-Zr-Ta-B films were fabricated on both ABF and polyimide substrates. Maximum 90% inductance increase in hundreds MHz frequency range were achieved in stripline inductors which are suitable for power delivery applications. Spiral inductors with Co-Zr-Ta-B films showed 18% inductance increase with quality factor of 4 at frequency up to 3 GHz.

The design and development of analog/mixed-signal (AMS) integrated circuits (ICs) is becoming increasingly expensive, complex, and lengthy. Rapid prototyping and emulation of analog ICs will be significant in the design and testing of complex analog systems. A new approach, Programmable ANalog Device Array (PANDA) that maps any AMS design problem to a transistor-level programmable hardware, is proposed. This approach enables fast system level validation and a reduction in post-Silicon bugs, minimizing design risk and cost. The unique features of the approach include 1) transistor-level programmability that emulates each transistor behavior in an analog design, achieving very fine granularity of reconfiguration; 2) programmable switches that are treated as a design component during analog transistor emulating, and optimized with the reconfiguration matrix; 3) compensation of AC performance degradation through boosting the bias current. Based on these principles, a digitally controlled PANDA platform is designed at 45nm node that can map AMS modules across 22nm to 90nm technology nodes. A systematic emulation approach to map any analog transistor to 45nm PANDA cell is proposed, which achieves transistor level matching accuracy of less than 5% for ID and less than 10% for Rout and Gm. Circuit level analog metrics of a voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) emulated by PANDA, match to those of the original designs in 22nm and 90nm nodes with less than a 5% error. Several other 90nm and 22nm analog blocks are successfully emulated by the 45nm PANDA platform, including a folded-cascode operational amplifier and a sample-and-hold module (S/H). Further capabilities of PANDA are demonstrated by the first full-chip silicon of PANDA which is implemented on 65nm process This system consists of a 24×25 cell array, reconfigurable interconnect and configuration memory. The voltage and current reference circuits, op amps and a VCO with a phase interpolation circuit are emulated by PANDA.

In recent years, an increase of environmental temperature in urban areas has raised many concerns. These areas are subjected to higher temperature compared to the rural surrounding areas. Modification of land surface and the use of materials such as concrete and/or asphalt are the main factors influencing the surface energy balance and therefore the environmental temperature in the urban areas. Engineered materials have relatively higher solar energy absorption and tend to trap a relatively higher incoming solar radiation. They also possess a higher heat storage capacity that allows them to retain heat during the day and then slowly release it back into the atmosphere as the sun goes down. This phenomenon is known as the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect and causes an increase in the urban air temperature. Many researchers believe that albedo is the key pavement affecting the urban heat island. However, this research has shown that the problem is more complex and that solar reflectivity may not be the only important factor to evaluate the ability of a pavement to mitigate UHI. The main objective of this study was to analyze and research the influence of pavement materials on the near surface air temperature. In order to accomplish this effort, test sections consisting of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Porous Hot Mix asphalt (PHMA), Portland Cement Concrete (PCC), Pervious Portland Cement Concrete (PPCC), artificial turf, and landscape gravels were constructed in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Air temperature, albedo, wind speed, solar radiation, and wind direction were recorded, analyzed and compared above each pavement material type. The results showed that there was no significant difference in the air temperature at 3-feet and above, regardless of the type of the pavement. Near surface pavement temperatures were also measured and modeled. The results indicated that for the UHI analysis, it is important to consider the interaction between pavement structure, material properties, and environmental factors. Overall, this study demonstrated the complexity of evaluating pavement structures for UHI mitigation; it provided great insight on the effects of material types and properties on surface temperatures and near surface air temperature.

Heating of asphalt during production and construction causes the volatilization and oxidation of binders used in mixes. Volatilization and oxidation causes degradation of asphalt pavements by increasing the stiffness of the binders, increasing susceptibility to cracking and negatively affecting the functional and structural performance of the pavements. Degradation of asphalt binders by volatilization and oxidation due to high production temperature occur during early stages of pavement life and are known as Short Term Aging (STA). Elevated temperatures and increased exposure time to elevated temperatures causes increased STA of asphalt. The objective of this research was to investigate how elevated mixing temperatures and exposure time to elevated temperatures affect aging and stiffening of binders, thus influencing properties of the asphalt mixtures. The study was conducted in two stages. The first stage evaluated STA effect of asphalt binders. It involved aging two Performance Graded (PG) virgin asphalt binders, PG 76-16 and PG 64-22 at two different temperatures and durations, then measuring their viscosities. The second stage involved evaluating the effects of elevated STA temperature and time on properties of the asphalt mixtures. It involved STA of asphalt mixtures produced in the laboratory with the PG 64-22 binder at mixing temperatures elevated 25OF above standard practice; STA times at 2 and 4 hours longer than standard practices, and then compacted in a gyratory compactor. Dynamic modulus (E*) and Indirect Tensile Strength (IDT) were measured for the aged mixtures for each temperature and duration to determine the effect of different aging times and temperatures on the stiffness and fatigue properties of the aged asphalt mixtures. The binder test results showed that in all cases, there was increased viscosity. The results showed the highest increase in viscosity resulted from increased aging time. The results also indicated that PG 64-22 was more susceptible to elevated STA temperature and extended time than the PG 76-16 binders. The asphalt mixture test results confirmed the expected outcome that increasing the STA and mixing temperature by 25oF alters the stiffness of mixtures. Significant change in the dynamic modulus mostly occurred at four hour increase in STA time regardless of temperature.

ABSTRACT Developing new non-traditional device models is gaining popularity as the silicon-based electrical device approaches its limitation when it scales down. Membrane systems, also called P systems, are a new class of biological computation model inspired by the way cells process chemical signals. Spiking Neural P systems (SNP systems), a certain kind of membrane systems, is inspired by the way the neurons in brain interact using electrical spikes. Compared to the traditional Boolean logic, SNP systems not only perform similar functions but also provide a more promising solution for reliable computation. Two basic neuron types, Low Pass (LP) neurons and High Pass (HP) neurons, are introduced. These two basic types of neurons are capable to build an arbitrary SNP neuron. This leads to the conclusion that these two basic neuron types are Turing complete since SNP systems has been proved Turing complete. These two basic types of neurons are further used as the elements to construct general-purpose arithmetic circuits, such as adder, subtractor and comparator. In this thesis, erroneous behaviors of neurons are discussed. Transmission error (spike loss) is proved to be equivalent to threshold error, which makes threshold error discussion more universal. To improve the reliability, a new structure called motif is proposed. Compared to Triple Modular Redundancy improvement, motif design presents its efficiency and effectiveness in both single neuron and arithmetic circuit analysis. DRAM-based CMOS circuits are used to implement the two basic types of neurons. Functionality of basic type neurons is proved using the SPICE simulations. The motif improved adder and the comparator, as compared to conventional Boolean logic design, are much more reliable with lower leakage, and smaller silicon area. This leads to the conclusion that SNP system could provide a more promising solution for reliable computation than the conventional Boolean logic.

Vehicle type choice is a significant determinant of fuel consumption and energy sustainability; larger, heavier vehicles consume more fuel, and expel twice as many pollutants, than their smaller, lighter counterparts. Over the course of the past few decades, vehicle type choice has seen a vast shift, due to many households making more trips in larger vehicles with lower fuel economy. During the 1990s, SUVs were the fastest growing segment of the automotive industry, comprising 7% of the total light vehicle market in 1990, and 25% in 2005. More recently, due to rising oil prices, greater awareness to environmental sensitivity, the desire to reduce dependence on foreign oil, and the availability of new vehicle technologies, many households are considering the use of newer vehicles with better fuel economy, such as hybrids and electric vehicles, over the use of the SUV or low fuel economy vehicles they may already own. The goal of this research is to examine how vehicle miles traveled, fuel consumption and emissions may be reduced through shifts in vehicle type choice behavior. Using the 2009 National Household Travel Survey data it is possible to develop a model to estimate household travel demand and total fuel consumption. If given a vehicle choice shift scenario, using the model it would be possible to calculate the potential fuel consumption savings that would result from such a shift. In this way, it is possible to estimate fuel consumption reductions that would take place under a wide variety of scenarios.

Characterization of standard cells is one of the crucial steps in the IC design. Scaling of CMOS technology has lead to timing un-certainties such as that of cross coupling noise due to interconnect parasitic, skew variation due to voltage jitter and proximity effect of multiple inputs switching (MIS). Due to increased operating frequency and process variation, the probability of MIS occurrence and setup / hold failure within a clock cycle is high. The delay variation due to temporal proximity of MIS is significant for multiple input gates in the standard cell library. The shortest paths are affected by MIS due to the lack of averaging effect. Thus, sensitive designs such as that of SRAM row and column decoder circuits have high probability for MIS impact. The traditional static timing analysis (STA) assumes single input switching (SIS) scenario which is not adequate enough to capture gate delay accurately, as the delay variation due to temporal proximity of the MIS is ~15%-45%. Whereas, considering all possible scenarios of MIS for characterization is computationally intensive with huge data volume. Various modeling techniques are developed for the characterization of MIS effect. Some techniques require coefficient extraction through multiple spice simulation, and do not discuss speed up approach or apply models with complicated algorithms to account for MIS effect. The STA flow accounts for process variation through uncertainty parameter to improve product yield. Some of the MIS delay variability models account for MIS variation through table look up approach, resulting in huge data volume or do not consider propagation of RAT in the design flow. Thus, there is a need for a methodology to model MIS effect with less computational resource, and integration of such effect into design flow without trading off the accuracy. A finite-point based analytical model for MIS effect is proposed for multiple input logic gates and similar approach is extended for setup/hold characterization of sequential elements. Integration of MIS variation into design flow is explored. The proposed methodology is validated using benchmark circuits at 45nm technology node under process variation. Experimental results show significant reduction in runtime and data volume with ~10% error compared to that of SPICE simulation.
