Prospective memory is defined as remembering to carry out specified actions in the future. Research has suggested that prospective memory retrieval is reliant on multiple cognitive processes to function, and the ways in which these different processes are used is dependent on a variety of variables relating to the prospective memory task at hand. The current study focuses on the strength of the association between the prospective
memory cue and the prospective memory intention. Based on literature suggesting that aspects of prospective memory are reliant on executive control functioning, the current study examined the possibility that executive control depletion would affect prospective memory ability on subsequent tasks. Results showed that depletion of executive control resources, measured objectively, did not impair prospective memory in either a low or
high cue-association condition. However, participants‟ subjective assessment of their own fatigue correlated significantly with their subsequent prospective memory performance, regardless of association condition. The results of the study indicate that depletion studies that fail to account for both objective and subjective measures suffer from an unclear interpretation of effects, and that recognition of perceived expectancies
of cognitive resource limitation can assist in improving prospective memory ability.

Social proof and mismatch of self-preference have been assumed to play an important role in the inference of value. They can be influential factors when it comes to decision-making in a mate-selection environment. In this thesis study, participants took an online survey in the form of a dating website. They answered a series of questions about the traits they would like to see in a potential mate. They were then presented with four potential mates and asked to rank them by their preferences. The results show that participants most preferred the potential mate with a high social proof and a low mismatch of self-preference and least preferred the potential mate with a low social proof and a high mismatch of self-preference. When comparing just social proof and mismatch of self-preference, there was not an interaction effect between the two. I conclude that even though social proof is a powerful influencing factor by itself, it did not have the power to trump the mismatch of self-preference.

Cryptotephra (microscopic volcanic ash) has had significant contributions towards constructing and refining age models and correlating archaeological sites for decades. This thesis will report on cryptotephra from the archaeological site of Kathu Pan, specifically from sinkhole 6, located on the southern edge of the Kalahari basin in the Northern Cape of South Africa. I will investigate the potential of cryptotephra from the Holocene layers of Kathu Pan (KP6) to test the current age model and source it to a specific region and a specific eruption. Both of the samples in this study, kp6-55-70 and kp6-75-90, are high silica rhyolites that date to the Holocene. Based on the geochemical findings, both samples have potential to be sourced from the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER), Guatemala, Indonesia, and New Zealand. The primary sourcing was focused on the Main Ethiopian Rift (MER) and the Turkana Basin in Kenya. Evidence suggests that kp6-75-90 is likely to have originated from the Turkana basin, meanwhile kp6-55-70 requires further sourcing in order to confidently correlate it to a region and an eruption. Further research needs to be completed in order to refine the age model at Kathu Pan 6.

Historic mining of heavy metals (HMs) in Arizona has resulted in the creation of abandoned mine lands (AML), which can become sources of contamination and possible risks to human health. The goals of this work were to support the creation of databases useful for AML risk assessment, and to use Patagonia, Arizona as a case study to assess the relationship between water quality and proximity to AML sites. The of risk assessment database for AML contains risk calculation results from published national and international studies, with 4,667 data points from 75 unique papers. From the data visualization, 18 environmental contaminants, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, F-, Fe, Hg, Mn, NH4+, Ni, Pb, Sb, Se, Tl, V, W, and Zn, had data points with non-carcinogenic health risks above commonly used health risk benchmarks. Comparatively, of the studies that computed a carcinogenic health risk, the seven contaminants evaluated (As, Cd, Cr, Cr(VI), Hg, Ni, Pb) all had data exceeding a 10-6 cancer risk (CR) reference value. In Patagonia, Pb, Cu, and Zn were measured at higher concentrations when closer to AML sites than at points downstream. These findings were corroborated by a comparison of contaminant concentrations across the watershed area, which additionally suggested a higher surface water solubility of HMs such as boron and barium.
