In this article we present a program that is supplemental to a low-cost force-sensing quadrupedal laminate robot platform previously developed by Ben Shuch. The robot has four legs with two degrees of freedom apiece. Each leg is a four-bar mechanism controlled by two servo motors. The program that has been developed allows the user to predict the force distribution of the robot based on its configuration and the angle of the ground it is standing on. Through the use of this program, future students working on research involving this robot will be able to calculate the force distribution of the robot based on its configuration and generate ideal configurations of the robot using data gathered from force sensors attached to its feet.

As urban populations increase, so does the demand for innovative transportation solutions which reduce traffic congestion, reduce pollution, and reduce inequalities by providing mobility for all kinds of people. One emerging solution is self-driving vehicles, which have been coined as a safer driving method by reducing fatalities due to driving accidents. While completely automated vehicles are still in the testing and development phase, the United Nations predict their full debut by 2030 [1]. While many resources are focusing their time on creating the technology to execute decisions such as the controls, communications, and sensing, engineers often leave ethics as an afterthought. The truth is autonomous vehicles are imperfect systems that will still experience possible crash scenarios even if all systems are working perfectly. Because of this, ethical machine learning must be considered and implemented to avoid an ethical catastrophe which could delay or completely halt future autonomous vehicle development. This paper presents an experiment for determining a more complete view of human morality and how this translates into ideal driving behaviors.
This paper analyzes responses to deviated Trolley Problem scenarios [5] in a simulated driving environment and still images from MIT’s moral machine website [8] to better understand how humans respond to various crashes. Also included is participants driving habits and personal values, however the bulk of that analysis is not included here. The results of the simulation prove that for the most part in driving scenarios, people would rather sacrifice themselves over people outside of the vehicle. The moral machine scenarios prove that self-sacrifice changes as the trend to harm one’s own vehicle was not so strong when passengers were introduced. Further defending this idea is the importance placed on Family Security over any other value.
Suggestions for implementing ethics into autonomous vehicle crashes stem from the results of this experiment but are dependent on more research and greater sample sizes. Once enough data is collected and analyzed, a moral baseline for human’s moral domain may be agreed upon, quantified, and turned into hard rules governing how self-driving cars should act in different scenarios. With these hard rules as boundary conditions, artificial intelligence should provide training and incremental learning for scenarios which cannot be determined by the rules. Finally, the neural networks which make decisions in artificial intelligence must move from their current “black box” state to something more traceable. This will allow researchers to understand why an autonomous vehicle made a certain decision and allow tweaks as needed.

The mean age of the world’s population is rapidly increasing and with that growth in an aging population a large number of elderly people are in need of walking assistance. In addition, a number of medical conditions contribute to gait disorders that require gait rehabilitation. Wearable robotics can be used to improve functional outcomes in the gait rehabilitation process. The ankle push-off phase of an individual’s gait is vital to their ability to walk and propel themselves forward. During the ankle push-off phase of walking, plantar flexors are required to providing a large amount of force to power the heel off the ground.

The purpose of this project is to improve upon the passive ankle foot orthosis originally designed in the ASU’s Robotics and Intelligent Systems Laboratory (RISE Lab). This device utilizes springs positioned parallel to the user’s Achilles tendon which store energy to be released during the push off phase of the user’s gait cycle. Goals of the project are to improve the speed and reliability of the ratchet and pawl mechanism, design the device to fit a wider range of shoe sizes, and reduce the overall mass and size of the device. The resulting system is semi-passive and only utilizes a single solenoid to unlock the ratcheting mechanism when the spring’s potential force is required. The device created also utilizes constant force springs rather than traditional linear springs which allows for a more predictable level of force. A healthy user tested the device on a treadmill and surface electromyography (sEMG) sensors were placed on the user’s plantar flexor muscles to monitor potential reductions in muscular activity resulting from the assistance provided by the AFO device. The data demonstrates the robotic shoe was able to assist during the heel-off stage and reduced activation in the plantar flexor muscles was evident from the EMG data collected. As this is an ongoing research project, this thesis will also recommend possible design upgrades and changes to be made to the device in the future. These upgrades include utilizing a carbon fiber or lightweight plastic frame such as many of the traditional ankle foot-orthosis sold today and introducing a system to regulate the amount of spring force applied as a function of the force required at specific times of the heel off gait phase.

With the revolution of low-cost microelectronics, rotary-wing vehicles have grown increasingly popular and important in the past two decades. With increased interest in quadcopters comes the need to for a systematic and rigorous framework to model, analyze, control, and design them. This thesis presents the beginning of such a framework.

With the revolution of low-cost microelectronics, rotary-wing vehicles have grown increasingly popular and important in the past two decades. With increased interest in quadcopters comes the need to for a systematic and rigorous framework to model, analyze, control, and design them. This thesis presents the beginning of such a framework.

The work presents the nonlinear equations of motion of a quadcopter. This includes the translational and rotational equations of motion, as well as an analysis of the nonlinear actuator dynamics. The work then analyzes the static properties of a quadcopter in forward flight equilibrium and shows how static properties change as physical properties of the vehicle are varied. Next, the dynamics of forward flight are linearized, and a dynamic analysis is provided.

After dynamic analysis, the work shows detailed hierarchical control system design trade studies, which includes attitude and translational inner-outer loop control. Among other designs, the following are presented: PD control, proportional control, pole-placement control. Each of these control architectures are employed for the inner loops and outer loops. The work also analyzes linear versus nonlinear simulation performance of a quadcopter, specifically for a step x-axis reference command. It is found that the nonlinear dynamics of the actuator cause significant discrepancy between linear and nonlinear simulation.

Finally, this thesis establishes directions for future graduate research. This includes hardware design, as well as moving toward design of a highly-maneuverable thrust-vectoring quadrotor which will be the focus of the proposed graduate PhD research. In summary, this thesis provides the beginning of a cohesive framework to model, analyze, control, and design quadcopters. It also lays the groundwork for graduate research and beyond.

For the basis of this project, a particular interest is taken in soft robotic arms for the assistance of daily living tasks. A detailed overview and function of the soft robotic modules comprised within the soft robotic arm will be the main focus. In this thesis, design and fabrication methods of fabric reinforced textile actuators (FRTAs) have their design expanded. Original design changes to the actuators that improve their performance are detailed in this report. This report also includes an explanation of how the FRTA’s are made, explaining step by step how to make each sub-assembly and explain its function. Comparisons between the presented module and the function of the soft poly limb from previous works are also expanded. Various forms of testing, such as force testing, range of motion testing, and stiffness testing are conducted on the soft robotic module to provide insights into its performance and characteristics. Lastly, present plans for various forms of future work and integration of the soft robotic module into a full soft robotic arm assembly are discussed.

Chemoreception is an important method for an octopus to sense and react to its surroundings. However, the density of chemoreceptors within different areas of the skin of the octopus arm is poorly documented. In order to assess the relative sensitivity of various regions and the degree to which chemoreception is locally controlled, octopus arms were amputated and exposed to acetic acid, a noxious chemical stimulus that has previously been shown to elicit movement responses in amputated arms (Hague et al., 2013). To test this, 11 wild-caught Octopus bimaculoides (6 females, 5 males) were obtained. Acetic acid vapor was introduced in the distal oral, distal aboral, proximal oral, and proximal aboral regions of amputated arms. The frequency of the occurrence of movement was first analyzed. For those trials in which movement occurred, the latency (delay between the stimulus and the onset of movement) and the duration of movement were analyzed. The distal aboral and distal oral regions were both more likely to move than either the proximal oral or proximal aboral regions (p < 0.0001), and when they did move, were more likely to move for longer periods of time (p < 0.05). In addition, the proximal oral region was more likely to exhibit a delay in the onset of movement compared to the distal oral or distal aboral regions (p < 0.0001). These findings provide evidence that the distal arm is most sensitive to noxious chemical stimuli. However, there were no significant differences between the distal oral and distal aboral regions, or between the proximal oral and proximal aboral regions. This suggests that there may not be a significant difference in the density of chemoreceptors in the aboral versus oral regions of the arm, contrary to claims in the literature. The other independent variables analyzed, including sex, body mass, arm length, anterior versus posterior arm identity, and left versus right arm identity, did not have a significant effect on any of the three dependent variables analyzed. Further analysis of the relative density of chemoreceptors in different regions of the octopus arm is merited.

The objective of this project was to research and experimentally test methods of localization, waypoint following, and actuation for high-speed driving by an autonomous vehicle. This thesis describes the implementation of LiDAR localization techniques, Model Predictive Control waypoint following, and communication for actuation on a 2016 Chevrolet Camaro, Arizona State University’s former EcoCAR. The LiDAR localization techniques include the NDT Mapping and Matching algorithms from the open-source autonomous vehicle platform, Autoware. The mapping algorithm was supplemented by that of Google Cartographer due to the limitations of map size in Autoware’s algorithms. The Model Predictive Control for waypoint following and the computer-microcontroller-actuator communication line are described. In addition to this experimental work, the thesis discusses an investigation of alternative approaches for each problem.

For my thesis I worked in ASU’s Bio-Inspired Mechatronics lab on a project lead by PhD student Pham H. Nguyen (Berm) to develop an assistive soft robotic supernumerary limb. I contributed to the design and evaluation of two prototypes: the silicon based Soft Poly Limb (SPL) and one bladder-based fabric arm, the fabric Soft Poly Limb (fSPL). For both arms I was responsible for the design of 3D printed components (molds, end caps, etc.) as well as the evaluation of the completed prototypes by comparing the actual performance of the arms to the finite element predictions. I contributed to the writing of two published papers describing the design and evaluation of the two arms. After the completion of the fSPL I attempted to create a quasi-static model of the actuators driving the fSPL.

muscular hydrostat, which allows for nearly infinite degrees of freedom of movement without
the structure of a skeletal system. This study employed Magnetic Resonance Imaging with a
Gadoteridol-based contrast agent to image the octopus arm and view the internal tissues. Muscle
layering

Octopus arms employ a complex three dimensional array of musculature, called a
muscular hydrostat, which allows for nearly infinite degrees of freedom of movement without
the structure of a skeletal system. This study employed Magnetic Resonance Imaging with a
Gadoteridol-based contrast agent to image the octopus arm and view the internal tissues. Muscle
layering was mapped and area was measured using AMIRA image processing and the trends in
these layers at the proximal, middle, and distal portions of the arms were analyzed. A total of 39
arms from 6 specimens were scanned to give 112 total imaged sections (38 proximal, 37 middle,
37 distal), from which to ascertain and study the possible differences in musculature. The
images revealed significant increases in the internal longitudinal muscle layer percentages
between the proximal and middle, proximal and distal, and middle and distal sections of the
arms. These structural differences are hypothesized to be used for rapid retraction of the distal
segment when encountering predators or noxious stimuli. In contrast, a significant decrease in
the transverse muscle layer was found when comparing the same sections. These structural
differences are hypothesized to be a result of bending behaviors during retraction. Additionally,
the internal longitudinal layer was separately studied orally, toward the sucker, and aborally,
away from the sucker. The significant differences in oral and aboral internal longitudinal
musculature in proximal, middle, and distal sections is hypothesized to support the pseudo-joint
functionality displayed in octopus fetching behaviors. The results indicate that individual
octopus arm morphology is more unique than previously thought and supports that internal
structural differences exist to support behavioral functionality.

Bicycles are already used for daily transportation by a large share of the world's population and provide a partial solution for many issues facing the world today. The low environmental impact of bicycling combined with the reduced requirement for road and parking spaces makes bicycles a good choice for transportation over short distances in urban areas. Bicycle riding has also been shown to improve overall health and increase life expectancy. However, riding a bicycle may be inconvenient or impossible for persons with disabilities due to the complex and coordinated nature of the task. Automated bicycles provide an interesting area of study for human-robot interaction, due to the number of contact points between the rider and the bicycle. The goal of the Smart Bike project is to provide a platform for future study of the physical interaction between a semi-autonomous bicycle robot and a human rider, with possible applications in rehabilitation and autonomous vehicle research.

This thesis presents the development of two balance control systems, which utilize actively controlled steering and a control moment gyroscope to stabilize the bicycle at high and low speeds. These systems may also be used to introduce disturbances, which can be useful for studying human reactions. The effectiveness of the steering balance control system is verified through testing with a PID controller in an outdoor environment. Also presented is the development of a force sensitive bicycle seat which provides feedback used to estimate the pose of the rider on the bicycle. The relationship between seat force distribution is demonstrated with a motion capture experiment. A corresponding software system is developed for balance control and sensor integration, with inputs from the rider, the internal balance and steering controller, and a remote operator.
