The efficiency of communication in the construction industry is crucial for the successful management of construction projects. Frontline Supervisors are construction professionals that have daily impact on physical construction. These supervisors have the unique challenge of managing various tasks, schedules, and people in order to complete their scope of work on time. With many methods of communication today, construction managers are searching for the most effective way to communicate with supervisors on all levels. This research project aims to study the quality of communication and quantity of communication methods among front line supervisors working on construction sites in Phoenix, Arizona. Findings may inform what types of communication, e.g., face-to-face individual conversations, in-person meeting, cell phone conversations, emails, etc., are most effective for frontline supervisors. The results of this research paper will be used to aid general contractors in their communication decisions. This research will also serve as a jumping point for future research on construction communication. Researchers at Arizona State University will be able to use the information collected in this research paper to continue communication surveys in the Phoenix metro area. By continuing this project, researchers will be able to inform contractors to make decisions that benefit trade partners and contractors.

The rapid growth of published research has increased the time and energy researchers invest in literature review to stay updated in their field. While existing research tools assist with organizing papers, providing basic summaries, and improving search, there is a need for an assistant that copilots researchers to drive innovation. In response, we introduce buff, a research assistant framework employing large language models to summarize papers, identify research gaps and trends, and recommend future directions based on semantic analysis of the literature landscape, Wikipedia, and the broader internet. We demo buff through a user-friendly chat interface, powered by a citation network encompassing over 5600 research papers, amounting to over 133 million tokens of textual information. buff utilizes a network structure to fetch and analyze factual scientific information semantically. By streamlining the literature review and scientific knowledge discovery process, buff empowers researchers to concentrate their efforts on pushing the boundaries of their fields, driving innovation, and optimizing the scientific research landscape.

This thesis investigates auxetic structures' specific energy absorption properties, characterized by their negative Poisson's Ratio (NPR). Auxetics, derived from natural materials and engineered designs, are increasingly applied in automotive, aerospace, and defense industries due to their enhanced material properties like indentation resistance and fracture toughness. The research commenced with a thorough literature review to gather relevant methodologies and insights into auxetic geometries. This was followed by analytical experiments and simulations focused on the re-entrant auxetic pattern, known for its simplicity and effectiveness. The study tested modifications to this pattern, aiming to enhance energy absorption by adjusting parameters like base thickness and adding filets. Simulations were performed using ANSYS 2023 R2, modeling the materials under plane stress conditions to assess their mechanical responses. Two main variants were examined: the Enhanced Stiffness pattern, which alters thickness, and the Filet Re-entrant pattern, which incorporates fillets to reduce stress concentrations. Results indicated that both modifications improved energy absorption compared to the standard re-entrant design, with Filet patterns showing superior performance due to their efficient stress distribution. This work extends the understanding of auxetic materials, demonstrating significant potential to improve safety and functionality in engineering applications through advanced material design.

Historically, young people have spearheaded environmental movements, demanding equitable involvement in decision-making processes that impact their future. Despite their active participation, barriers such as inadequate knowledge, lack of empowerment, and diminished hope often hinder meaningful engagement and impact. This study addresses these challenges by implementing a series of educational workshops designed to equip youth with the necessary tools to effectively influence climate policy and urban planning so that they can feel more hopeful about the future in the face of climate change. Utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods, this research evaluates how different methods of arts-based educational engagement impact workshop participants' knowledge, empowerment, and optimism regarding their ability to inspire environmental change. The findings aim to contribute to the discourse on effective youth engagement in environmental justice, advocating for strategies that equip youth with the tools they need to foster sustainable community development and hope for the future.

The paper investigates the efficacy of utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) for code generation, specifically looking into Java and it’s GUI Swing library, and evaluates the quality of the generated code. It presents a comparative analysis of various AI-generated solutions, aiming to determine which approach yields the most optimal results. The study explores different AI techniques, such as machine learning models, employed in code generation tasks. Through rigorous experimentation and evaluation criteria, the paper assesses factors like code efficiency, readability, and functionality to identify the most effective AI-based code generation methods. The findings contribute insights into leveraging AI for code development and offer recommendations for improving code quality in software engineering practices. Utilizing Java Swing I created a Hangman game and then asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Blackbox to create the same game.

Extinction of experience is a phenomenon characterized by a decline in people’s contact with nature and impoverishment of local wildlife, which can result in negative changes in human attitudes towards the environment and overall well-being. In this study, I piloted a survey and an interview with my own immediate and extended family members to gain insight regarding specific nature experiences, including the factors that may inhibit such experiences. Through interviews, I found that many respondents were uncertain whether their own backyards counted as a nature space; if so, this significantly impacts their reported frequency and duration or time spent outdoors. The inclusion of yard spaces as nature spaces may therefore be necessary to fully understand the diverse nature experiences of a community.

Over time, physics has evolved to include new and interesting findings that have changed the way the world is viewed. An interesting topic in the world of physics is quantum mechanics. Quantum mechanics can be interpreted in many ways, however, the two most notable interpretations, which will be discussed in this thesis, are the Copenhagen Interpretation and the Many Worlds Interpretation. These interpretations set out to define the ways in which quantum mechanics should be approached and studied. They give a foundation for which physicists should build upon and continue to improve. This thesis begins with an overview of important classical concepts helpful in understanding the differences between the classical and quantum worlds. Following this, superposition will be introduced along with the Copenhagen and Many Worlds Interpretations. In addition to these interpretations, other important topics such as decoherence, spin, entanglement, what is quantum, deterministic vs indeterminacy and Schrödinger’s wave function will be discussed. Overall, this thesis will compare the Copenhagen Interpretation and Many Worlds Interpretation and provide important information which is helpful in understanding the world of quantum mechanics.
