The writing of the Medieval period has been influential for centuries yet is often simplified by caricatures of the brave knight and lovely damsel. Especially in terms of gender, this period in western history is particularly strict and binary. However, through unique authors such as Marie de France, a rare female writer of the period, we can see complex, yet subtle, presentations of difference that may be unexpected to some readers. Within the lays of Marie de France, I aim to analyze the feminized male figures of Lanval, Guigemar and Bisclavret as models of gender difference using a lens of modern gender theory, specifically the ideas of theorists such as Judith Butler and R.W. Connell. These male figures of demonstrate deviations from the standard medieval masculinity through androgyny and hyper-masculinity in ways unique for the period. The conventions of the Western medieval culture are then subverted by the supernatural, making the lays lasting examples of gender expression. Using modern theory, we can take a step back from previous historical periods and try to better understand the society and culture of that time and place. By examining these male figures of difference and medieval standards of masculinity of a context long past we can see how to grow and progress further in the modern day. Gender can be understood as a social construct even centuries ago, exemplified by the unique figures of difference presented by such authors as Marie de France. Keeping that in mind, we can reanalyze literature in innovative ways and continue to seek new understandings of gender and masculinity.

Informal caregivers to persons with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) commonly experience high levels of perceived burden, stress, and low quality of life— outcomes that negatively affect the quality of care provided. Yet to be explored are the effects of heart-focused breathing, a self-regulation deep breathing technique, on perceived caregiver burden and heart rate variability (HRV), a measure of autonomic nervous system function. Considering the high attrition rates of many previous in-person AD caregiver interventions, it may be necessary to implement an online intervention to address perceived caregiver burden. This study aimed to test the trends in effects of a 2-week online heart-focused breathing intervention using HeartMath’s Heart Lock-In® technique on perceived caregiver burden, perceived stress, quality of life, anxiety, inner haven, self-compassion, and HRV in a population of AD caregivers. Ten informal AD caregivers participated in the study with five participants randomized into the waitlist control group and five into the intervention group. The intervention group practiced a 10-minute heart-focused breathing protocol using their smart device (i.e., phone) every day for a 2-week period. Participants completed pre- and post- self-report questionnaires online via Google Forms and HRV assessments via the Welltory mobile application. The HRV assessments measured rMSSD, high frequency, and low frequency. The intervention group did not experience improvements related to perceived caregiver burden, perceived stress, anxiety, inner haven or high frequency waves. However, the study results suggest positive trends in quality of life, self-compassion, rMSSD, and low frequency waves among the AD caregivers. Additional research within a larger and more diverse population is needed.

Personality is a relevant and applicable research topic now more than ever; because of the Internet, self-report measures of personality are becoming increasingly accessible. Although now widely available for personal application, personality inventories are not often examined in the context of their associations with other factors. Specifically, there exists a gap in the research on personality and its associations with philosophical belief. Based on a sample of 88 individuals, correlations between the Big Five and Philosophy Dichotomy Test were examined in order to investigate the associations between personality traits and philosophical belief. Agreeableness was found to be negatively associated with the sensuality, values, metaphysical, and societal axes, corresponding to higher levels of hedonism, rationalism, materialism, and egoism. These findings suggest that personality as measured by the Big Five and philosophical belief are somewhat associated. Limitations and future directions are presented.

The aim of this paper is to investigate the B-casein fractions in Scandinavian and Icelandic milk for evidence to either support or refute the claim that the A1 variant of B-casein is diabetogenic in adolescent populations. Based on the theory that differences in milk protein composition explain a lower incidence of Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) in Iceland when compared to surrounding Nordic countries, an informative poster was created so that a more educated decision can be made by those wishing to take preventative measures against the incidence of the disease. This paper includes a basic background behind the epidemiology of T1D and the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations. Next, comparison between milk protein composition and consumption in Iceland against the other Nordic countries is performed through an in-depth literature review. The review was conducted using PubMed databases until December of 2018. Key findings of this investigation raise concerns regarding the decision between optimizing milk producing rates or breeding for milk devoid of diabetogenic proteins. The current literature on the impact of cattle genetics on the protein composition of milk sheds light on the safety of Icelandic dairy and the resulting health of their population. Icelandic dairy has been evidenced to contain lower levels of A1 b-casein and is considered less diabetogenic. For these reasons, this author would recommend the consumption of Icelandic dairy products over those from other regions.

Bipolar disorder will affect an estimated 4.4% of adults in the U.S (Bipolar Disorder, 2017). This study addresses the hypothesis that individuals endorsing mania symptoms also tend to show increased creativity. There has been some empirical support linking mania and creativity, as well as anecdotal evidence of highly creative individuals posthumously being diagnosed with some form of bipolar disorder. To our knowledge, however, no prior studies have sought to link specific symptoms of mania with creativity. Participants in this study completed two separate creativity tasks, measuring convergent and divergent thinking, respectively; the Remote Associates Test (RAT) and the Alternate Uses Test (AUT). Two questionnaires followed: The Behavioral Inhibition/Activation Scale (BIS/BAS; Carver & White, 1994) with subscales for Drive, Fun Seeking and Reward Responsiveness and the Hypomanic Personality Scale (HPS; Stanton, McArtor & Watson, 2017) with subscales for an individual’s level of Modesty, Charisma, Activation, Intellectual Confidence and Lability. Multiple regression analyses revealed that scores on Activation, Intellectual Confidence, and Modesty significantly predicted creative test scores. Future studies may seek to replicate the study with a different community or use different measures of creativity.

Their presence is of great concern as they can transmit many deadly diseases, including yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika, and dengue fever, putting the residents of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area

Despite its well-documented preference for much more humid climates, the yellow fever mosquito, or Aedes aegypti, has inhabited Arizona since 1951. Their presence is of great concern as they can transmit many deadly diseases, including yellow fever, chikungunya, Zika, and dengue fever, putting the residents of the Phoenix Metropolitan Area at risk. Maricopa County Vector Control has made an extensive effort to reduce this risk mainly through the act of fogging insecticides during the night in areas where mosquito numbers exceed a threshold. However, given the well-known temperature-toxicity relationships in insect species, fogging at night may be less or more effective —depending on the relationship— due to the colder temperatures at these times. Additionally, insecticide resistance testing has always been performed at temperatures not usually experienced during fogging, adding to the uncertainty on how useful those test outcomes are. This study took the first steps in determining the effects of temperature on the toxicity of a commonly used insecticide, deltamethrin, on Aedes aegypti by developing a dose response curve on a lab strain at a standard lab temperature of 25°C by performing a CDC bottle bioassay. The diagnostic dose was found to be 50 μg/mL and the lethal dose, 50% (LD50, the dose required to kill half of the test mosquitoes) was found to be 9 μg/mL. Future testing would need to be completed to compare the deltamethrin dose response curve developed in this study with deltamethrin dose response curves at various different temperatures.

Listening to music is an experience shared by both a listener and a composer. For a composer, music is a way of self-expression, a composition being able to tell a story, send a message or emit an emotion to a listener. This creative project focuses on the composition of 3 songs that portray a strong message to the listener. The lyrics of the compositions were written by taking experiences that have caused interference in life, taking that to portray a strong message to the listener. The message of the compositions are portrayed both with the lyrics and the accompanying music through instrumentation. The compositions are composed for a trio, SunKissed, made up of violin, guitar and percussion with three vocals.

Stress activates physiological systems within the body to protect oneself against the potential harmful effects of enduring long-term stress. Past studies have shown that structures involved in timing are implicated in a number of psychological disorders and further are sensitive to stress. In this experiment, Sprague Dawley rats are trained to perform a perspective timing task and are then exposed to twice-daily chronic variable stress for 21 days. Behavioral data are collected, followed by post-mortem tissue analysis of the PFC, hippocampus, and striatum. This study aims to examine the morphological changes in key brain regions such as the hippocampus that appear to be involved in interval timing. Additionally, this study aims to confirm that dendritic complexity in the hippocampus produces consistent data using a classic Sholl analysis versus using a virtual image-stacking software, Neurostackr. The results of this study demonstrate that the expected Gaussian graph produced from a classic Sholl analysis was produced from both a long-shaft and short-shaft neuron found in the hippocampus using the virtual technology. These findings verify that a virtual image-stacking software and Sholl analysis will suffice in place of the traditional method of hand traced neurons on a transparent sheet with concentric circles to count bifurcation points. This virtual method ultimately reduces cost, improves timeliness of data collection, and eliminates some of the subjectivity of human error.

Tissue engineering scaffold fabrication methods often have tradeoffs associated with them that prevent one method from fulfilling all design requirements of a desired scaffold. This undergraduate thesis seeks to combine 3D printing and electrospinning tissue engineering fabrication methods into a hybrid fabrication method that can potentially fulfill more design requirements than each method alone. The hybrid scaffolds were made by inserting electrospun scaffolds between layers of 3D printed scaffolds of increasing print temperature and effects on adhesion and mechanical properties were characterized. The fabrication method proved to be feasible and print temperature affected both adhesion and mechanical properties of the scaffolds. A positive, non-linear relationship was seen between print temperature and adhesion and resulting force. Insertion of electrospun mats led to increased damping of scaffolds. Evidence from characterization indicated factors other than print temperature were likely contributing to adhesion and mechanical properties. If studied further, this fabrication method could potentially be used to improve overall structure and regenerative potential of tissue engineering scaffolds.

Microsolvation studies have begun to shed the light on the impact that single water molecules have on the structure of a molecule. The difference in behavior that molecules show when exposed to an increasing number of water molecules has been considered important but remains elusive. The cluster distributions of formic acid were studied for its known importance as an intermediate in the water gas shift reaction. Implementations of the water gas shift reaction range from a wide range of applications. Studies have proposed implementations such as variety such as making water on the manned mission to mars and as an industrial energy source. The reaction pathway of formic acid favors decarboxylation in solvated conditions but control over the pathway is an important field of study. Formic acid was introduced into a high vacuum system in the form of a cluster beam via supersonic expansion and was ionized with the second harmonic (400nm) of a pump-probe laser. Mass spectra showed a ‘magic’ 5,1 (formic acid, water) peak which showed higher intensity than was usually observed in clusters with 1 water molecule. Peak integration showed a higher relative abundance for the 5,1 cluster as well and showed the increased binding favorability of this conformation. As a result, there is an enhanced probability of molecules sticking together in this arrangement and this is due to the stable, cage-like structure that the formic acid forms when surrounding the water molecule.
