For this study, my overarching goal was to understand the possibilities of humanity’s future in space exploration. Addressing the future of space exploration not only opens doors for a multitude of discoveries but may answer questions that can be essential to our survival on Earth. This study, more specifically, aimed to determine how college students at Arizona State University, engineering and astronomy students in particular, visualize the future of space exploration, as in the future, they will become the leading experts at the forefront of all space-related developments. The method through which I have conducted this study is a short survey, consisting of a variety of questions, designed to encourage students to develop their own unique interpretations of space exploration and ultimately, its imminent future. The results ultimately demonstrated that most participants in the study believed that political obstacles were the most prevalent concern in the further development of space exploration. There also appeared to be a moderate outlook on the future success and vitality of space exploration among student scientists and engineers. From a statistical standpoint, there appeared to be no alarming difference of opinion between these two ASU student groups.

There is a common sentiment in the financial services industry that your financial advisor must be a fiduciary. In this thesis, I explore whether that is truly the case. I present the two main groups of financial advisors: broker-dealers and registered investment advisors (RIAs). I compare the two groups by examining 4 key comparisons: regulation, standards of care, compensation, and investment behavior. At the end, I share my personal opinions regarding where I believe investors should seek their financial services.

Traditional crop production faces a significant challenge due to overapplication, mining, and decreased supply of mineral nutrients. In addition to this, the urgent need to address global food waste has become increasingly apparent, as discarded food scraps in landfills contribute to harmful greenhouse gas emissions. A promising solution that addresses both of these critical challenges includes the innovative utilization of food waste anaerobic digestate as a fertilizer for crop production. This study investigated whether using anaerobically digested food waste as fertilizer can fully replace or reduce the use of chemical fertilizer in vegetable and ornamental crop production. The seeds of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) ‘Nancy’ and petunia (Petunia × hybrida) ‘Easy Wave Velour Berry’ were sown into a soilless medium and grown in the indoor vertical farm at 22℃ under sole-source lighting at a photosynthetic photon flux density of 180 µmol∙m–2∙s–1 with a 20-h photoperiod. Four weeks after sowing, seedlings were transplanted and grown for three weeks in a greenhouse with an average daily temperature of 20 °C under ambient sunlight with an average daily light integral of 22 mol∙m–2∙d–1. The plants were fertilized using tap water mixed with different fertilizers, including a chemical fertilizer (15N-2.2P-16.6K), an organic fertilizer derived from anaerobically digested food waste (0.06N-0.026P-0.1191K), or a blend containing 50% chemical fertilizer and 50% food waste-based fertilizer, at the electrical conductivity of 0.7 mS·cm-1 during the young plant stage and 2.1 mS·cm-1 after transplant. At the young plant stage, lettuce and petunia have similar growth characteristics, including leaf number, SPAD index, and shoot and root fresh mass, when treated with either chemical or chemical + food waste fertilizer. In contrast, in both species, leaf area was 93-152% larger and fresh mass was 82-141% greater in plants treated with chemical or chemical + food waste fertilizer compared to food waste fertilizer. At the finishing stage, lettuce and petunia also showed similar growth and flowering characteristics under chemical or chemical + food waste fertilizer. However, in the lettuce finishing plants, fresh mass was 127-199% larger when supplied with chemical or chemical + food waste fertilizer compared to food waste fertilizer. In petunia, the number of flowers was 123-190% greater in chemical and chemical + food waste fertilizer compared to food waste fertilizer. In both lettuce and petunia at the finishing stage, the SPAD index, leaf number, root fresh mass, and root dry mass were similar among all treatments. These results suggest that food waste fertilizer applied as the sole source of plant nutrition is insufficient in comparison to chemical fertilizer at the same electrical conductivity. However, partially substituting some food waste fertilizer for chemical fertilizer reaps similar plant yield to chemical fertilizer on its own.

The Supply Chain of a company is the most critical component of a business as it directly impacts a company’s ability to deliver products/services to customers is a timely, cost effective method. With this amount of importance, a resilient supply chain is pivotal for positive future earnings in each successive quarter. Two pivotal metrics to gauge a Supply Chain include Production Delays and Excess Inventory. Through in-depth analysis, it was found that these metrics had caused abnormal amounts of price volatility with a stock’s performance. Understanding these metrics, the impact and lesson that COVID had taught, and analyzing earnings transcripts of publicly traded company’s demonstrates the use of Supply Chain health in comparison to company performance. This thesis aims to examine how a company's supply chain affects its performance, by analyzing different metrics and disruptions that have caused significant volatility in the stock market. The objective is to help investors maximize their profitability or reduce their risk by identifying the key factors that impact a company's supply chain.

This study investigates the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on telemedicine-prescribed controlled substances by discussing the opinions of pharmacists holding an Arizona pharmacy license. To accommodate the rapid changes during the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government adapted pharmacy laws to better support the healthcare community. The use of remote healthcare services such as telemedicine visits and online pharmacy services dramatically increased during the pandemic, so regulators waived tele-health restrictions like the Ryan Haight Act. This study involved structured interviews with 3 participants. The interviews revealed a positive outlook on the future of telehealth and the possibilities of modernizing healthcare and pharmacy. The study suggests that the waiving of the Ryan Haight Act was perceived somewhat positively by pharmacists, although they still had concerns regarding abandoning parts of the Act from a patient safety standpoint. The study concludes that certain pharmacy and telemedicine regulations are outdated given the positive and negative outcomes of these laws during the global pandemic. While this study offers insights on bringing various healthcare and law arguments together, the small sample size results in limited scope. The study still provides points of discussion to offer recommendations for implementation of the Ryan Haight Act and other similar tele-health and online-pharmacy regulations.

This thesis seeks to examine a nascent topic pertinent to the future of investment reporting to participants in global capital markets: cryptocurrency reporting. In the age of investor freedom, low to zero brokerage fees, and digital ‘do-it-yourself’ investing, many investors and investing platforms have adopted the use of digital currencies.

This thesis seeks to examine a nascent topic pertinent to the future of investment reporting to participants in global capital markets: cryptocurrency reporting. In the age of investor freedom, low to zero brokerage fees, and digital ‘do-it-yourself’ investing, many investors and investing platforms have adopted the use of digital currencies. Since its inception in 2009, cryptocurrency has been surrounded by controversy, which impacted financial institutions holding it, companies using it in transactions, and investors trading it. With cryptocurrency’s inherent volatility and relatively little accounting guidance, these stakeholders have faced difficulty in making capital allocation decisions, properly recording their holdings and transactions, and learning how to engage in activities involving cryptocurrency. Moreover, cryptocurrency has caught the attention of market regulators due to these same factors. Our project directly addresses this topic and explores the accounting implications of using cryptocurrency based on currently available authoritative and non-authoritative guidance. We further examine the need for authoritative reporting guidance, the regulatory bodies responsible for prescribing reporting guidance, and potential recommendations for future accounting standards. We begin by defining cryptocurrency and distinguishing it from other digital assets in Section 2. In Section 3, we discuss the risks presented by digital currencies and their inherent volatility. In Section 4, we describe the ways in which businesses currently use, treat, and interact with cryptocurrency from both transactional and accounting perspectives. In Section 5, we review, consolidate, and present the current guidance on digital currencies from the Big 4 accounting firms. In Section 6, we investigate the cryptocurrency disclosures of five large public US companies through an analysis of their annual reports. In Section 7, we research the FASB and SEC and their standard-setting processes to determine which organization is best suited to provide guidance on cryptocurrency reporting. As part of this task, we consider the role of these two regulatory agencies, their views and attitudes toward cryptocurrencies, and their jurisdictions over this area of financial reporting. This examination involves regulatory and public policy research, to understand the standard-setting process within the applicable regulatory body. Finally, in Section 8, we directly engage in the standard-setting process by drafting a comment letter to the FASB which includes the results of our research, the necessity (or lack thereof) for authoritative reporting guidance, and key issues that the Board should consider.

This project was an exploratory take on outreach in the life sciences - looking into the existing literature and practices and formulating a proof of concept for future outreach with synthesizes my findings. The research culminated in the creation of an insect guide for the novice observer, which reads as a modern take on the dichotomous key and allows amateur insect observers to develop some skills of identification with relatively little entomological knowledge.
