Best Management Practices (BMPs) are often designed to restore the water quality of impaired waterbodies. They are expensive to install and maintain and often have limited post-installation analysis. There is a gap in our knowledge of the long-term real-world efficiency of such systems as their dynamics are complex and poorly understood, and we have very limited data about these systems. We looked at water quality changes pre- and post-BMP implementation from sites around the US to better understand the impacts of BMPs on the nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations in the waterbodies. Water quality data was obtained from 72 waterbodies across the United States using the National Water Quality Monitoring Council’s Water Quality Portal. This data was analyzed for trends using the Kaplan-Meier method, exceedance probability, and lag time analysis. Out of the seventy-two (72) watershed locations, twenty-two (22) did not have enough data for analysis. Of these fifty (50) remaining watersheds locations one hundred eighty-four (184) monitoring sites were analyzed. Only sixty-nine (69) of these monitoring sites were found to have enough data for analysis. Forty-eight (48) sites saw improvement in nutrient levels, where overall post-implementation exceedance probability for critical thresholds (defined as 1 mg/l for N and 0.1 mg/l for P) decreased. Twenty-one (21) sites did not see improvement, where post-implementation exceedance probabilities did not show any reduction; in some cases, it showed an increase. Even among the efficient sites, where improvement was found, significant variation was observed in changes in exceedance probability with time, with many sites not demonstrating an expected uniform decreasing trend. It was also found that 56 out of the 72 water bodies had some biological indicator present, these included dissolved oxygen concentrations, benthic macroinvertebrate populations, fish communities/aquatic life, bacteria, and index scores. However, data gaps were detrimental to conclusively assessing BMPs with biological indicators. It was determined that sparse biological indicators data were not indicative of BMP success. These observations highlight the importance of designing a monitoring strategy that can capture these unexpected trends and allow a better understanding of BMPs. Along with better monitoring strategies, consistent and frequent monitoring is needed. Therefore, the effectiveness of best management practices was inconclusive due to a lack of available data on many sites.

As children and preteens begin to grow up and make their way through their teenage years, they are beginning to figure themselves out and form their own identities. They are starting to learn about events and the issues going on in the world and they are forced to determine their stance on certain issues whether that be their self-identity, politics, social injustice, etc. Realistically, many people feel uncomfortable talking about these issues. We want to prepare our audience, so they are not afraid or uncomfortable of such conversations. Through collectible cards and enamel pins with a children’s book, this product acts as a gateway to becoming more educated at an earlier age, and it aims to spread awareness about the experiences of our peers. The combination of digital branding and physical objects puts our purpose of spreading awareness in a way that makes it easier for our peers to understand. When people can relate to an idea, they will develop a personal connection to it and feel comfortable. We want our audience to be able to identify with, feel connected, and get educated on social injustice topics like mental health, discrimination, or harassment through our product. In recent years, education technology has been transforming the way we learn. With our project’s website feature, it is a more immersive and entertaining way to learn. Our generation has grown up with collectibles like Webkinz, Pokemon, Build-A-Bears, etc. that would come with a digital feature where owners can form a personal connection with their character for fun. Our purpose is to bring that back and make it more modern, current, and educational.

This project challenges the prevailing weight-centric paradigm of present-day medicine which focuses on weight as a primary indicator of health. This study aimed to understand the impact of a brief pragmatic intervention to facilitate shifting healthcare providers' clinical conceptualization, attitudes, and practices from weight-centric to weight-inclusive care. A one-hour pragmatic training was composed and presented to providers at a community health clinic. The intervention highlighted the critical gap in our understanding of health and attempted to bring attention to the intricate web of factors that play into the complexity of weight. The education also provided specific tools that providers can put into practice to better cultivate weight-inclusive care. Mixed methods were used to evaluate the acceptability and efficacy of the intervention via changes in provider attitudes, treatment behaviors, and conceptualization of patient issues. Findings reveal modest differences from pre- to post-intervention as well as a notable disconnect among providers’ understanding and application of concepts. Participants expressed significant interest in the training and weight-inclusive care.

Modified Salmonella strains and recombinant DNA in a plasmid are used to construct a Salmonella strain that is dependent on the experimentally inserted plasmid. This construction will be done via lab techniques such as polymerase chain reactions (PCR), transformation, and other means to create this construction. With future successful construction, the inhibition of flagella assembly, within the tumor environment, and increased synthesis of flagellin will be possible. In the case that only assembly is prevented, then, the reliance on the lysis system to release flagellin into the tumor microenvironment will be used as a means to induce immune response. With the success of the self-lysis ability, these strains could be used to target these tumor cells to deliver anticancer material as a vaccine delivery system.

Every year, Arizona mobile home residents suffer hundreds of fatalities and severe illnesses due to the effects of extreme heat within their homes exacerbated by high energy costs, a lack of energy-efficient infrastructure, and underlying socio-economic issues. Many of these deaths and severe illnesses can be prevented via active monitoring and reporting of temperature and humidity data from these living spaces. The team will design, build, test, and implement a Heat Warning Detection System (HWDS) to mitigate heat-related illnesses and deaths. The HWDS will detect when temperature and humidity levels have reached a dangerous threshold and will issue notifications to the emergency contacts of the resident over SMS and/or email. This will allow for timely preventative measures to be taken to ensure the safety of the resident. The team will investigate the ideal threshold to notify the mobile home residents. HWDS will require minimal user interaction. Apart from the initial physical installation of the device, the user will have to provide a list of emergency contacts that they would like the system to notify in the event that HWDS detects dangerous conditions in their residence. By deploying prototypes of HWDS to volunteer participant homes, we will be able to validate the functionality of the system as well as the usability of the physical device by homeowners. HWDS provides homeowners and their loved ones with the opportunity to take preventative measures before being exposed to conditions that could potentially have more severe implications. In the spirit of promoting accessibility and prevention among the most vulnerable communities in Greater Phoenix, our team partners with the Knowledge Exchange for Resilience at ASU (KER) to interface with organizations such as the Arizona Association of Manufactured Home, RV & Park Model Owners (AAMHO) to promote legislation and subsidies aimed towards making solutions such as ours more financially viable for the communities that need it most.
