Ice hockey is widely recognized as one of the most exciting sports to watch and the NHL boasts very good in-game attendance figures when compared to similar professional sports leagues. In this study, we compare the NHL to the NBA, two leagues that share the same size stadiums and in-game attendance numbers but show huge disparities in national television viewership. The most watched NHL game of 2022/23, game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals totaled 2.72 million viewers nationally and the most watched NBA game of the 22/23 season was the final game of the NBA Finals totaled 17.88 million viewers nationwide. This is especially startling given the fact that on the local level, in cities with both NHL and NBA teams, the local rating are relatively even and oftentimes favor the NHL team. To investigate why this discrepancy exists, four cities that are home to both an NHL and NBA franchise were chosen as the focus of research. Youth participation and cost of both basketball and ice hockey were examined in each city and it was determined that they account for a large portion of the differences in national TV viewership. Marketing strategies of each league were also investigated, but it was found that these had little impact on the discrepancies in national TV viewership. The study concludes with possible solutions for the NHL to decrease costs and increase accessibility play, resulting in an increase in youth participation, especially in nontraditional hockey markets without NHL teams. In turn, this will bridge the gap in national viewership between themselves and the NBA.

With uses in fields such as medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology, halogenases are useful enzymes in nature which add or substitute halogens onto other molecules. By doing so, they become necessary for biosynthesis and cross-coupling reactions. Halogenases can be classified by three main types of mechanisms: nucleophilic, radical, and electrophilic. From there, they can be further broken down by the halogen involved, the substrate needed, other proteins used, or molecules generated. A notable example is PrnA which is a tryptophan-7 halogenase that falls under the flavin-dependent definition with an electrophilic mechanism. Historically, research on these enzymes was slow until the use of bioinformatics rapidly accelerated discoveries to the point where halogenases like VirX1 can be identified from viruses. By reviewing the literature available on halogenase since their first analysis, a better understanding of their functions can be obtained. Also, with the application of bioinformatics, a phylogenetic analysis on the halogenases present in cyanobacteria can be conducted and compared.

The Refugee Education and Clinic Team (REACT) is a local organization led by students at Arizona State University and the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine with the purpose of improving the health of refugees and asylees. One way in which REACT aims to improve the health of refugees and asylees is through health education workshops, which inform refugees about health conditions and management options. The purpose of this project was to analyze how REACT’s health education workshop about obesity impacted refugees’ understanding of healthy living. This project implemented a pre- and post-presentation survey at REACT’s obesity workshop to measure refugees’ understanding of healthy living. Overall, a pre-existing understanding of the importance of healthy eating and daily exercise was measured and an improvement in their understanding of the symptoms associated with obesity was recorded.
