In recent years, several methods have been proposed to encode sentences into fixed length continuous vectors called sentence representation or sentence embedding. With the recent advancements in various deep learning methods applied in Natural Language Processing (NLP), these representations play a crucial role in tasks such as named entity recognition, question answering and sentence classification.

Traditionally, sentence vector representations are learnt from its constituent word representations, also known as word embeddings. Various methods to learn the distributed representation (embedding) of words have been proposed using the notion of Distributional Semantics, i.e. “meaning of a word is characterized by the company it keeps”. However, principle of compositionality states that meaning of a sentence is a function of the meanings of words and also the way they are syntactically combined. In various recent methods for sentence representation, the syntactic information like dependency or relation between words have been largely ignored.

In this work, I have explored the effectiveness of sentence representations that are composed of the representation of both, its constituent words and the relations between the words in a sentence. The word and relation embeddings are learned based on their context. These general-purpose embeddings can also be used as off-the- shelf semantic and syntactic features for various NLP tasks. Similarity Evaluation tasks was performed on two datasets showing the usefulness of the learned word embeddings. Experiments were conducted on three different sentence classification tasks showing that our sentence representations outperform the original word-based sentence representations, when used with the state-of-the-art Neural Network architectures.

Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), a neurodegenerative disease is a progressive disease that affects the brain gradually with time and worsens. Reliable and early diagnosis of AD and its prodromal stages (i.e. Mild Cognitive Impairment(MCI)) is essential. Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) measures the decline in the regional cerebral metabolic rate for glucose, offering a reliable metabolic biomarker even on presymptomatic AD patients. PET scans provide functional information that is unique and unavailable using other types of imaging. The computational efficacy of FDG-PET data alone, for the classification of various Alzheimer’s Diagnostic categories (AD, MCI (LMCI, EMCI), Control) has not been studied. This serves as motivation to correctly classify the various diagnostic categories using FDG-PET data. Deep learning has recently been applied to the analysis of structural and functional brain imaging data. This thesis is an introduction to a deep learning based classification technique using neural networks with dimensionality reduction techniques to classify the different stages of AD based on FDG-PET image analysis.

This thesis develops a classification method to investigate the performance of FDG-PET as an effective biomarker for Alzheimer's clinical group classification. This involves dimensionality reduction using Probabilistic Principal Component Analysis on max-pooled data and mean-pooled data, followed by a Multilayer Feed Forward Neural Network which performs binary classification. Max pooled features result into better classification performance compared to results on mean pooled features. Additionally, experiments are done to investigate if the addition of important demographic features such as Functional Activities Questionnaire(FAQ), gene information helps improve performance. Classification results indicate that our designed classifiers achieve competitive results, and better with the additional of demographic features.

The origin and function of color in animals has been a subject of great interest for taxonomists and ecologists in recent years. Coloration in animals is useful for many important functions like species identification, camouflage and understanding evolutionary relationships. Quantitative measurements of color signal and patch size in mammals, birds and reptiles, to name a few are strong indicators of sexual selection cues and individual health. These measurements provide valuable insights into the impact of environmental conditions on habitat and breeding of mammals, birds and reptiles. Recent advances in the area of digital cameras and sensors have led to a significant increase in the use of digital photography as a means of color quantification in animals. Although a significant amount of research has been conducted on ways to standardize image acquisition conditions and calibrate cameras for use in animal color quantification, almost no work has been done on designing automated methods for animal color quantification. This thesis presents a novel perceptual"–"based framework for the automated extraction and quantification of animal coloration from digital images with slowly varying (almost homogenous) background colors. This implemented framework uses a combination of several techniques including color space quantization using a few dominant colors, foreground"–"background identification, Bayesian classification and mixture Gaussian modelling of conditional densities, edge"–"enhanced model"–"based classification and Saturation"–"Brightness quantization to extract the colored patch. This approach assumes no prior information about the color of either the subject or the background and also the position of the subject in the image. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated for the plumage color of the wild house finches. Segmentation results obtained using the implemented framework are compared with manually scored results to illustrate the performance of this system. The segmentation results show a high correlation with manually scored images. This novel framework also eliminates common problems in manual scoring of digital images such as low repeatability and inter"–"observer error.

Video denoising has been an important task in many multimedia and computer vision applications. Video denoising has been an important task in many multimedia and computer vision applications. Recent developments in the matrix completion theory and emergence of new numerical methods which can efficiently solve the matrix completion problem have paved the way for exploration of new techniques for some classical image processing tasks. Recent literature shows that many computer vision and image processing problems can be solved by using the matrix completion theory. This thesis explores the application of matrix completion in video denoising. A state-of-the-art video denoising algorithm in which the denoising task is modeled as a matrix completion problem is chosen for detailed study. The contribution of this thesis lies in both providing extensive analysis to bridge the gap in existing literature on matrix completion frame work for video denoising and also in proposing some novel techniques to improve the performance of the chosen denoising algorithm. The chosen algorithm is implemented for thorough analysis. Experiments and discussions are presented to enable better understanding of the problem. Instability shown by the algorithm at some parameter values in a particular case of low levels of pure Gaussian noise is identified. Artifacts introduced in such cases are analyzed. A novel way of grouping structurally-relevant patches is proposed to improve the algorithm. Experiments show that this technique is useful, especially in videos containing high amounts of motion. Based on the observation that matrix completion is not suitable for denoising patches containing relatively low amount of image details, a framework is designed to separate patches corresponding to low structured regions from a noisy image. Experiments are conducted by not subjecting such patches to matrix completion, instead denoising such patches in a different way. The resulting improvement in performance suggests that denoising low structured patches does not require a complex method like matrix completion and in fact it is counter-productive to subject such patches to matrix completion. These results also indicate the inherent limitation of matrix completion to deal with cases in which noise dominates the structural properties of an image. A novel method for introducing priorities to the ranked patches in matrix completion is also presented. Results showed that this method yields improved performance in general. It is observed that the artifacts in presence of low levels of pure Gaussian noise appear differently after introducing priorities to the patches and the artifacts occur at a wider range of parameter values. Results and discussion suggesting future ways to explore this problem are also presented.

Video object segmentation (VOS) is an important task in computer vision with a lot of applications, e.g., video editing, object tracking, and object based encoding. Different from image object segmentation, video object segmentation must consider both spatial and temporal coherence for the object. Despite extensive previous work, the problem is still challenging. Usually, foreground object in the video draws more attention from humans, i.e. it is salient. In this thesis we tackle the problem from the aspect of saliency, where saliency means a certain subset of visual information selected by a visual system (human or machine). We present a novel unsupervised method for video object segmentation that considers both low level vision cues and high level motion cues. In our model, video object segmentation can be formulated as a unified energy minimization problem and solved in polynomial time by employing the min-cut algorithm. Specifically, our energy function comprises the unary term and pair-wise interaction energy term respectively, where unary term measures region saliency and interaction term smooths the mutual effects between object saliency and motion saliency. Object saliency is computed in spatial domain from each discrete frame using multi-scale context features, e.g., color histogram, gradient, and graph based manifold ranking. Meanwhile, motion saliency is calculated in temporal domain by extracting phase information of the video. In the experimental section of this thesis, our proposed method has been evaluated on several benchmark datasets. In MSRA 1000 dataset the result demonstrates that our spatial object saliency detection is superior to the state-of-art methods. Moreover, our temporal motion saliency detector can achieve better performance than existing motion detection approaches in UCF sports action analysis dataset and Weizmann dataset respectively. Finally, we show the attractive empirical result and quantitative evaluation of our approach on two benchmark video object segmentation datasets.

The exponential rise in unmanned aerial vehicles has necessitated the need for accurate pose estimation under any extreme conditions. Visual Odometry (VO) is the estimation of position and orientation of a vehicle based on analysis of a sequence of images captured from a camera mounted on it. VO offers a cheap and relatively accurate alternative to conventional odometry techniques like wheel odometry, inertial measurement systems and global positioning system (GPS). This thesis implements and analyzes the performance of a two camera based VO called Stereo based visual odometry (SVO) in presence of various deterrent factors like shadows, extremely bright outdoors, wet conditions etc... To allow the implementation of VO on any generic vehicle, a discussion on porting of the VO algorithm to android handsets is presented too. The SVO is implemented in three steps. In the first step, a dense disparity map for a scene is computed. To achieve this we utilize sum of absolute differences technique for stereo matching on rectified and pre-filtered stereo frames. Epipolar geometry is used to simplify the matching problem. The second step involves feature detection and temporal matching. Feature detection is carried out by Harris corner detector. These features are matched between two consecutive frames using the Lucas-Kanade feature tracker. The 3D co-ordinates of these matched set of features are computed from the disparity map obtained from the first step and are mapped into each other by a translation and a rotation. The rotation and translation is computed using least squares minimization with the aid of Singular Value Decomposition. Random Sample Consensus (RANSAC) is used for outlier detection. This comprises the third step. The accuracy of the algorithm is quantified based on the final position error, which is the difference between the final position computed by the SVO algorithm and the final ground truth position as obtained from the GPS. The SVO showed an error of around 1% under normal conditions for a path length of 60 m and around 3% in bright conditions for a path length of 130 m. The algorithm suffered in presence of shadows and vibrations, with errors of around 15% and path lengths of 20 m and 100 m respectively.

Debugging is a hard task. Debugging multi-threaded applications with their inherit non-determinism is all the more difficult. Non-determinism of any kind adds to the difficulty of cyclic debugging. In Android applications which are written in Java, threads and concurrency constructs introduce non-determinism to the program execution. Even with the same input, consecutive runs may not be the same and reproducing the same bug is a challenging task. This makes it difficult to understand and analyze the execution behavior or to understand the source of a failing execution. This thesis introduces a replay mechanism for Android applications written in Java and is based on the Lamport Clock. This tool provides the user with a controlled debugging environment, where the program execution follows the identical partially ordered happened-before dependency among threads, as during the recorded execution. In this, certain significant events like thread creation, synchronization etc. are recorded during run-time. They can later be replayed off-line, as many times as needed to pinpoint and fix an error in the application. It is software based approach and has been implemented by modifying the Dalvik Virtual Machine in the Android platform. The method of replay described in this thesis is independent of the underlying operating system scheduler.

Continuous advancements in biomedical research have resulted in the production of vast amounts of scientific data and literature discussing them. The ultimate goal of computational biology is to translate these large amounts of data into actual knowledge of the complex biological processes and accurate life science models. The ability to rapidly and effectively survey the literature is necessary for the creation of large scale models of the relationships among biomedical entities as well as hypothesis generation to guide biomedical research. To reduce the effort and time spent in performing these activities, an intelligent search system is required. Even though many systems aid in navigating through this wide collection of documents, the vastness and depth of this information overload can be overwhelming. An automated extraction system coupled with a cognitive search and navigation service over these document collections would not only save time and effort, but also facilitate discovery of the unknown information implicitly conveyed in the texts. This thesis presents the different approaches used for large scale biomedical named entity recognition, and the challenges faced in each. It also proposes BioEve: an integrative framework to fuse a faceted search with information extraction to provide a search service that addresses the user's desire for "completeness" of the query results, not just the top-ranked ones. This information extraction system enables discovery of important semantic relationships between entities such as genes, diseases, drugs, and cell lines and events from biomedical text on MEDLINE, which is the largest publicly available database of the world's biomedical journal literature. It is an innovative search and discovery service that makes it easier to search
avigate and discover knowledge hidden in life sciences literature. To demonstrate the utility of this system, this thesis also details a prototype enterprise quality search and discovery service that helps researchers with a guided step-by-step query refinement, by suggesting concepts enriched in intermediate results, and thereby facilitating the "discover more as you search" paradigm.

Federated Learning (FL) is envisaged to be a promising solution for collaboratively training a machine learning model while keeping the training data decentralized and private. Instead of sharing raw data to the central entity, the participating client devices share focused updates for aggregation to ensure global convergence of the model.

Federated Learning (FL) is envisaged to be a promising solution for collaboratively training a machine learning model while keeping the training data decentralized and private. Instead of sharing raw data to the central entity, the participating client devices share focused updates for aggregation to ensure global convergence of the model. Owing to the shortcomings of manually handcrafted neural network architectures, the research community is striving to develop Neural Architecture Search (NAS) approaches to automatically search for optimal networks that fit the clients’ data. Despite the inaccessibility of clients’ data in an FL setting, the federated NAS literature has recently witnessed great progress to apply these NAS techniques to an FL setting. However, one of the key bottlenecks of Federated Learning is the cost of communication between clients and the server, and the state-of-the-art federated NAS techniques search for networks with millions of parameters that require several rounds of communication to find the optimal weight parameters. Also, deploying a network having millions of parameters on edge devices (which are the typical participants in an FL process) is infeasible due to its computational limitations and increased latency. Thus, this work proposes Weight-Agnostic Federated Neural Architecture Search (WFNAS), a novel evolutionary framework to search for well-performing and minimally connected weight-agnostic network architectures in an FL setting. As the connectivity of the networks themselves is the solution, there is no need for weight training and hyperparameter tuning, reducing the communication overhead significantly. The experiments indicate a gain of nearly 40% for orthogonal (vertical FL) data distributions compared to local training. This work is the first federated NAS technique in the literature for vertical FL. Although the experiments are performed in a resource-constrained environment, the aim of this thesis is to show a new direction of research to the FL community.

Facial Expressions Recognition using the Convolution Neural Network has been actively researched upon in the last decade due to its high number of applications in the human-computer interaction domain. As Convolution Neural Networks have the exceptional ability to learn, they outperform the methods using handcrafted features. Though the state-of-the-art models achieve high accuracy on the lab-controlled images, they still struggle for the wild expressions. Wild expressions are captured in a real-world setting and have natural expressions. Wild databases have many challenges such as occlusion, variations in lighting conditions and head poses. In this work, I address these challenges and propose a new model containing a Hybrid Convolutional Neural Network with a Fusion Layer. The Fusion Layer utilizes a combination of the knowledge obtained from two different domains for enhanced feature extraction from the in-the-wild images. I tested my network on two publicly available in-the-wild datasets namely RAF-DB and AffectNet. Next, I tested my trained model on CK+ dataset for the cross-database evaluation study. I prove that my model achieves comparable results with state-of-the-art methods. I argue that it can perform well on such datasets because it learns the features from two different domains rather than a single domain. Last, I present a real-time facial expression recognition system as a part of this work where the images are captured in real-time using laptop camera and passed to the model for obtaining a facial expression label for it. It indicates that the proposed model has low processing time and can produce output almost instantly.
