This paper will cover topics regarding remote work. More specifically, remote work for the field of logistics. It will also dive into remote work platforms themselves e.g., Slack, Zoom, etc. Microsoft Teams, the specific software we used while I was at my internship, will be analyzed as well. I will, specifically, be analyzing the fundamental issues that occurred during my internship, developing a feasible solution with a laid-out process for each one. After the proper execution of these processes, I will discuss my results. I found that time is the most critical component of an optimal transition to remote work. Finally, I will conclude with reflections on my findings, insights from current working supply chain professionals, and prompt further research that could be done.

This honors thesis explores the potential use of LoRa technology for detecting moisture in a diaper. Tests of both onboard and external humidity sensors coupled with LoRa transmission are incredibly promising. The potential scale of the final device also shows much promise, measuring smaller than a U.S. dime. However, the estimated cost for producing these proof-of-concept units in bulk is $19.41 per unit. While this is believed to be a pessimistic estimate of the price, the cost of production remains too high regardless for large-scale implementation. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the need for further research and development to optimize the design and reduce the cost of production. Despite the limitations imposed by price, the idea of using LoRa in detecting moisture in a diaper remains intriguing and promising, however, RFID technology has many advantages, such as size, cost, and passive power features.

Early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic introduced a change in communication norms in regard to well-being. People traversed through different forms of communication to adapt to policies and regulations that limited in-person interactions to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Social interactions have been found to be an innate human need, important to one’s health and well-being. The study looked at the relationship between socializing and well-being during the state of the COVID-19 pandemic. Socializing variables consisted of remote and in-person socializing which in-person socializing was divided into two distinct categories. In-person socializing was divided into in-person safe socializing, indicating socializing that was safe from the risk of contracting the virus, and in-person unsafe socializing which indicates that socializing was at risk of contracting the virus. Additionally, the current study also investigated how age moderates this relationship between socializing and well-being. SEM analyses reported that in-person unsafe socializing has a significant positive association with well-being outcomes: anxiety and depression which indicate high levels of anxiety and depression with increased in-person unsafe socializing. The study also found remote socializing to have a significant positive association with the well-being outcome: positive affect, indicating increased levels of positive affect with increased remote socializing. Regression analyses looked at moderation by age, finding no significant interactions of age between socializing and well-being. Findings suggest the beneficial role of remote socializing and although remote socializing cannot replace in-person interactions, it serves as a supplemental resource during unpredictable events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

Course-based undergraduate research experiences (CUREs) are strategically designed to advance novel research and integrate future professionals into the scientific community by making relevant discoveries through iteration, communication, and collaboration. With Universities also expanding online undergraduate degree programs that incorporate students who are otherwise unable to attend college, there is a demand for online asynchronous courses to train online students in authentic research, thereby leading to a more skilled, diverse, and inclusive workforce. In this case-study, a pilot CURE leveraging the data-intensive field of genomics was presented as an inclusive opportunity for asynchronous, online students to increase their research experience without having to commit to in person or extra-curricular assignments. This online CURE was designed to investigate the effects of trimming software on high-throughput sequencing data when analyzing sex differential gene expression. Project-based objectives were developed to asynchronously teach (1) the biology behind the research, (2) the coding needed to conduct the research, and (3) professional development tools to communicate research findings. Course effectiveness was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively using weekly, open-response progress reports and an assessment administered before and after term completion. This pilot study exhibited that students can be successful in remote research experiences that incorporate channels for communication, bespoke and accessible learning materials, and open-response reports to monitor challenges and coping strategies. In this iteration, remote students demonstrated improved learning outcomes and self-reported improved confidence as researchers. In addition, students gained more realistic expectations to self-assess computational research skill-levels and self-identified adaptive coping strategies that are transferrable to future research projects. Overall, this framework for an online asynchronous CURE effectively taught students computational skills to conduct genomics research in addition to professional skills to transition to and thrive in the workforce.
