As the need for data concerning the health of the world's oceans increases, it becomes necessary to develop large, networked communication systems underwater. This research involves the development of an embedded operating system that is suited for optically-linked underwater wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Optical WSNs are unique in that large sums of data may be received relatively infrequently, and so an operating system for each node must be very responsive. Additionally, the volatile nature of the underwater environment means that the operating system must be accurate, while still maintaining a low profile on a relatively small microprocessor core. The first part of this research concerns the actual implementation of the operating system's task scheduler and additional libraries to maintain synchronization, and the second part involves testing the operating system for responsiveness to interrupts and overall performance.

As persistent non-volatile memory solutions become integrated in the computing ecosystem and landscape, traditional commodity file systems architected and developed for traditional block I/O based memory solutions must be reevaluated. A majority of commodity file systems have been architected and designed with the goal of managing data on non-volatile storage devices such as hard disk drives (HDDs) and solid state drives (SSDs). HDDs and SSDs are attached to a computing system via a controller or I/O hub, often referred to as the southbridge. The point of HDD and SSD attachment creates multiple levels of translation for any data managed by the CPU that must be stored in non-volatile memory (NVM) on an HDD or SSD. Storage Class Memory (SCM) devices provide the ability to store data at the CPU and DRAM level of a computing system. A novel set of modifications to the ext2 and ext4 commodity file systems to address the needs of SCM will be presented and discussed. An in-depth analysis of many existing file systems, from multiple sources, will be presented along with an analysis to identify key modifications and extensions that would be necessary to execute file system on SCM devices. From this analysis, modifications and extensions have been applied to the FAT commodity file system for key functional tests that will be presented to demonstrate the operation and execution of the file system extensions.

Real-Time Operating Systems are used in a variety of applications ranging from autonomous vehicles, flight controllers, and energy management systems to pacemakers, satellite tracking systems, amateur robotics and much more. It turns out that while general-purpose computers can perform tasks quite quickly, the execution time for various processes varies noticeably between different executions. Execution time variation poses a big challenge for many computer-controlled systems that operate in the real-world such as robots, autonomous vehicles, drones, traffic signals, etc. The execution time variation matters in these systems since they must interact in the real world and perform actions at the proper times, and executing these tasks at other times can have varied effects ranging from a minor inconvenience to catastrophic failure. Many of these real-time systems are comprised of single board computers, such as a pacemaker. One single-board computer that is popular among hobbyists due to its form factor, cost, and performance is the Raspberry Pi, which uses an ARM-based processor. In order to provide a Real-Time Operating System for this single board computer this paper presents Jobbed, a single-core Real-Time Operating System which uses a fixed priority preemptive scheduler, targeted at the Raspberry Pi 2B. In this paper, we present the algorithmic structure behind this system and compare it to the Raspbian Operating System in an array of performance and behavioral tests targeted towards proper Real-Time Operating Systems.
