Upon investigating the current state of the high scrap problem at Niagara Bottling's Phoenix manufacturing facility, it was found that 49% of the scrap was being generated at the bottling lines in the form of plastic bottles, and 39% of scrap took the form of preforms accumulated at either the bottling lines or the injection molding machines. The scope of this project includes all forms of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), but the large accumulation of scrap in these areas suggests a primary focus on the bottling lines and the injection molding machines. Further analysis of the bottling lines found that the filler at each line as well as the blower on line X1 were the biggest contributors to the scrap accumulation problem. Each of these machines was seeing over 0.4% of bottles rejected at the visual inspection units. Due to the underlying status and quality issues of the injection molding machines that were beyond the scope of this project, this process was only investigated for solutions involving the overall processes and people. Based on the data and process flow analysis there were several solutions proposed including a root-cause analysis of the highest faulting machines, the repair of the injection molding overhead conveyor systems, the creation of a low waste environment, and the implementation a scrap tracking and analysis process. Based on the current high variability in the scrap experience across all machines, it is recommended that Niagara Phoenix pursue the scrap tracking and analysis alternative. After the implementing the scrap tracking and analysis process, the initial results were encouraging and could potentially warrant the investment in a software platform that could automate the collection of data necessary for this process. Based on the initial results of the manual collection and analysis process, each individual line show signs of potential reduction in the scrap rate of over 50%. According to this improvement, purchasing the software platform would see a payoff period of only 36 days.

With increasing interest in sustainability and green building, organizations are implementing programs such as Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance (LEED-EB) in order to focus corporate sustainability goals on the operations of a facility and the practices of the building occupants. Green building programs help reduce the impact of a facility and bring about several environmental benefits including but not limited to energy conservation, water conservation and material conservation. In addition to various environmental benefits, green building programs can help companies become more efficient. The problem is that organizations are not always successful in their pursuits to achieve sustainability goals. It frequently take years to implement a program, and in many cases the goals for sustainability never come to fruition, when in the mean time resources are wasted, money is spent needlessly and opportunities are lost forever. This thesis addresses how the Six Sigma methodologies used by so many to implement change in their organizations could be applied to the LEED-EB program to help companies achieve sustainability results. A qualitative analysis of the Six Sigma methodologies was performed to determine if and how a LEED-EB program might utilize such methods. The two programs were found to be compatible and several areas for improvements to implementing a LEED-EB program were identified.

Perfection is extremely difficult to achieve when playing team sports. This is especially true for lacrosse, a sport where dropped passes, missed shots and turnovers are prevalent even at the college and professional levels of the game. In order to improve on mistakes, teams must first recognize where the errors are being made. The purpose of this project is to implement the DMAIC process improvement method into lacrosse, with the goal of identifying and implementing improvements, leading to a more successful team.
In order to use DMAIC, lacrosse was expressed as a process that included five phases: offense, defense, riding, clearing and faceoffs. Data was gathered for each phase using game film from the Arizona State Men’s Club Lacrosse Team over the course of the 2019 and 2020 seasons. The data was then analyzed by comparing the output statistics of each phase to the goal differential, number of goals scored, and number of goals against. Once the areas of improvement were determined, additional analysis was done to determine why these certain areas needed improvement. The results provided what changes needed to be made in order to improve the team. In order to ensure the team sustained their success, control measures were put in place to determine what action needs to be taken and when.
