Depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts or actions are on the rise in adolescents (National Institute of Mental Health, 2015; Bridge, Asti, & Horowitz, 2015). Parents, school administrators, and therapists are searching for resiliency factors with in at-risk groups to aid students in need. In previous work, Luthar and Zigler (1992) reported that intelligent youth are more resilient than less intelligent youth under low stress conditions but they lose their advantage under high stress conditions. This study examined whether intelligence (reflected in grade point average; GPA) and maladaptive (internalizing and externalizing symptoms) behaviors are negatively related in adolescents, and tested whether level of stress, reflected in emotion regulation and friendship quality, moderated that association. It also probed whether the relationships differ by gender. Sixth-graders (N=506) were recruited with active parental consent from three middle schools. Adolescents completed self-report questionnaires Regarding demo graphics, maladaptive behaviors, emotion regulation, and friendship quality, and GPA data were collected from the school. Regression analyses found that GPA was negatively related to externalizing symptoms. Girls with poor friendship communication report significantly higher maladaptive behaviors. This relation was more pronounced for girls with high GPAs, as predicted. Results support the theory that intelligent female adolescents are more reactive under adverse circumstances. Future efforts should follow students through middle school into high school to evaluate whether friendships remain important to adjustment, hold for boys as well as girls, and have implications for relationship interventions.

Women have made great progress in the fight for equality over the years; however, there is still a disparity in wages among men and women under capitalism. Women make an average of approximately 76 cents to the 1 dollar of a man. This is a problem that is caused by the lack of value society puts on women’s work. This thesis explores this issue by analyzing and utilizing some of the ideas found in texts such as The Marx-Engels Reader by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels, Marx, Women, and Capitalist Social Reproduction: Marxist Feminist Essays by Martha E. Gimenez, and Revolting Prostitutes: The Fight for Sex Workers' Rights by Molly Smith and Juno Mac. Through analyzing the texts, subject matter such as domestic labor, sexual labor, and ideas revolving around capitalism are revealed and discussed to further understand the way that women can be freed from the exploitation they experience under the capitalist system.

Modern society is progressing at an unprecedented rate, with technologies like the internet enabling us to publicize life-changing words at a press of a button. Through these powerful tools, we have overcome traditional boundaries to create online communities, but reckless use of these tools has also deteriorated our human relationships.

Modern society is progressing at an unprecedented rate, with technologies like the internet enabling us to publicize life-changing words at a press of a button. Through these powerful tools, we have overcome traditional boundaries to create online communities, but reckless use of these tools has also deteriorated our human relationships. This disconnection can be described as an alienation from our society, and by extension, we experience alienation from ourselves. By applying the ideas of existentialist philosophers who have wrestled with alienation in the 20th century, my thesis suggests that individuals can reorient ourselves and our place in society by maintaining consciousness of the human realities that alienation reveals, refraining from tendencies that keep us under illusions, and defending true freedom for ourselves and for others. Simultaneously, society must reorient itself by encouraging equal participation, personal growth, and honest representation of complex identities.
