As part of the InnovationSpace program, interdisciplinary teams of five undergraduate students from the areas of business, engineering, graphic design, industrial design, and sustainability are responsible for creating a product idea that addresses a societal need. My team, Flo, was tasked with finding a product/service solution that will increase collaboration or creativity in a workplace environment. After deciding as a group how to define collaboration—working with others to achieve a common goal—and creativity—getting to an end goal in a different way than is expected—we spent the fall 2014 semester researching pain points and areas of interest for potential customers and users. We learned that one of the barriers to productivity for our target users in startups and mature corporations is that they often lack the right mix of private and collaborative spaces. From this insight, we created a product system called Trenz.
There are benefits and drawbacks to both collaboration and individual work. Trenz sits at the intersection of both work styles, thus aiming to negate the downsides of both and harness their benefits based on real-time user needs. Holistically, the corporate workplace furniture industry is stagnant, despite several trends that pave the way for future innovation. Even though studies are consistently released on the benefits of natural light, flexibility, and activity in the workplace, the furniture industry has not yet responded with a solution that successfully solves all three while keeping the user in mind. As such, Trenz is a product-service system with the potential to create a new segment in the market because of its user-centric design, the support of individual/group work dynamics, and its feature set that can accommodate a diverse group of users.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 is a civil rights law that protects the rights of people with disabilities. Within InnovationSpace, my team and I investigated the problems of ADA regulations within hotels. Despite how the ADA is meant to prevent discrimination from occurring, many disabled people still face problems today in hotels from inconveniences to ADA regulation violations. As said in the mission statement of the hotel project in InnovationSpace, going where you want, when you want and with whom you want, is a basic human right that everyone deserves to enjoy, so it is essential that people with disabilities are properly accommodated. Being intrigued of the expectations and reality of ADA compliance found in hotels, I decided to further investigate this gap.

This project was completed as part of the InnovationSpace collaborative thesis, an entrepreneurial joint venture program that allows students to develop products that create market value while serving societal needs. This collaborative thesis was done in a team of students from various disciplines under the sponsorship of Cisco Systems, and the goal was to develop an assistive technology project for the disabled that incorporated the internet of things (IOT). This project was broken out into several different phases. Initially, the team came up with a variety of ideas based on our market research. We narrowed down the ideas to a list of three potential products and built a business model and prototype for each of them seen in phase 5. After reviewing them further, we ultimately selected the MecX, an assistive technology designed to increase physical activity for a disabled person. We built a working prototype for this product and created a full design with all stakeholders in mind. Once this was done, we ran surveys to test the feasibility of our product to its demographic. Finally, we presented this product to a panel of judges and sponsors.

The Innovation Space program is a joint venture among the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering and W.P. Carey School of Business in order for transdisciplinary students to develop a product that creates social change. LG was the sponsor for 2018-2019 class with the goal of creating comfortable cooling that is better for the environment. Throughout seven phases, the Sumo team developed three product ideas, selected one product idea, developed a business plan and implementation plan. The Ciel vent system was picked and tested for any assumptions made in the initial business plan. After adjustments were made to the final phase seven business plan, a reflection was completed about the W. P. Carey School of Business and Innovation Space experience.
