This project explores how modern mobile technology can be used to provide support for domestic violence victims. The goal of the project is to create a proof-of-concept iOS mobile application that maintains a discreet safety front and provides domestic violence victims with resources and safety planning. The design and implementation are disguised as a hair salon app to maintain a low profile on the user’s phone. The HairHelp app features quick exit navigation, a secure database to store a user’s private and personal documents in case of emergency, and a checklist of safety planning measures. The steps taken in this project serve as the foundation for a larger project in the long term.

We attempted to apply a novel approach to stock market predictions. The Logistic Regression machine learning algorithm (Joseph Berkson) was applied to analyze news article headlines as represented by a bag-of-words (tri-gram and single-gram) representation in an attempt to predict the trends of stock prices based on the Dow Jones Industrial Average. The results showed that a tri-gram bag led to a 49% trend accuracy, a 1% increase when compared to the single-gram representation’s accuracy of 48%.

During the global COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, many universities shifted their focus to hosting classes and events online for their student population in order to keep them engaged. The present study investigated whether an association exists between student engagement (an individual’s engagement with class and campus) and resilience. A single-shot survey was administered to 200 participants currently enrolled as undergraduate students at Arizona State University. A multiple regression analysis and Pearson correlations were calculated. A moderate, significant correlation was found between student engagement (total score) and resilience. A significant correlation was found between cognitive engagement (student’s approach and understanding of his learning) and resilience and between valuing and resilience. Contrary to expectations, participation was not associated with resilience. Potential explanations for these results were explored and practical applications for the university were discussed.

Over the past several decades, cyberbullying has increasingly become one of the most dangerous threats to an adolescent’s mental health. Heather Springer, writing for the American Psychological Association, projects that roughly 33% of American teenagers are affected by cyberbullying while on social media (Springer). This startling percentage, compounded by an escalating need to combat cyberbullying’s negative impact on mental health, has catalyzed a wave of psychological research to explore the ways in which social media impacts teens. Over the years, researchers have produced a plethora of publications on the subject, inspiring families to pursue cyberbullying prevention for their loved ones. However, despite this surge in anti-cyberbullying interest, few researchers have attempted to coalesce these psychological findings with computer applications, and fewer still have sought to prevent cyberbullying through the strengthening of parent-teen relationships (Silva et al., 2019). Because of this, the BullyBlocker team, led by Dr. Yasin Silva and Dr. Deborah Hall, has spent the past couple years developing a mobile application called ActionPoint. Our team hopes that through this app, the risk of cyberbullying is drastically decreased and even prevented.

As the prevalence of augmented reality (AR) technology continues to increase, so too have methods for improving the appearance and behavior of computer-generated objects. This is especially significant as AR applications now expand to territories outside of the entertainment sphere and can be utilized for numerous purposes encompassing but not limited to education, specialized occupational training, retail & online shopping, design, marketing, and manufacturing. Due to the nature of AR technology, where computer-generated objects are being placed into a real-world environment, a decision has to be made regarding the visual connection between the tangible and the intangible. Should the objects blend seamlessly into their environment or purposefully stand out? It is not purely a stylistic choice. A developer must consider how their application will be used — in many instances an optimal user experience is facilitated by mimicking the real world as closely as possible; even simpler applications, such as those built primarily for mobile devices, can benefit from realistic AR. The struggle here lies in creating an immersive user experience that is not reliant on computationally-expensive graphics or heavy-duty models. The research contained in this thesis provides several ways for achieving photorealistic rendering in AR applications using a range of techniques, all of which are supported on mobile devices. These methods can be employed within the Unity Game Engine and incorporate shaders, render pipelines, node-based editors, post-processing, and light estimation.
