A total of 262 individuals, who underwent psychotherapy at a counseling training facility, completed the Outcome Questionnaire-45 (OQ-45) and the reduced version of the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems (IIP-32). This study posited the following research question: Is the magnitude of the effect of ethnicity on treatment outcome conditional on certain IP dimensions (dominance or affiliation)? The purpose of this research was to determine whether or not ethnicity, represented by 3 ethnic groups (Whites, Hispanics, and Asians), was related to treatment outcome, and if this relationship was moderated by two interpersonal distress dimensions: dominance and affiliation. The results of the hierarchical regression analyses indicated that ethnicity did not predict post-treatment outcome gain, and neither affiliation nor dominance was a moderator of the relationship between outcome and ethnicity.

Dominance behavior can regulate a division of labor in a group, such as that between reproductive and non-reproductive individuals. Manipulations of insect societies in a controlled environment can reveal how dominance behavior is regulated. Here, I examined how morphological caste, fecundity, group size, and age influence the expression of dominance behavior using the ponerine ant Harpegnathos saltator. All H. saltator females have the ability to reproduce. Only those with a queen morphology that enables dispersal, however, show putative sex pheromones. In contrast, those with a worker morphology normally express dominance behavior. To evaluate how worker-like dominance behavior and associated traits could be expressed in queens, I removed the wings from alate gynes, those with a queen morphology who had not yet mated or left the nest, making them dealate. Compared to gynes with attached wings, dealates frequently performed dominance behavior. In addition, only the dealates demonstrated worker-like ovarian activity in the presence of reproductive individuals, whereas gynes with wings produced sex pheromones exclusively. Therefore, the attachment of wings determines a gyne’s expression of worker-like dominance behavior and physiology. When the queen dies, workers establish a reproductive hierarchy among themselves by performing a combination of dominance behaviors. To understand how reproductive status depends on these interactions as well as a worker’s age, I measured the frequency of dominance behaviors in groups of different size composed of young and old workers. The number of workers who expressed dominance scaled with the size of the group, but younger ones were more likely to express dominance behavior and eventually become reproductive. Therefore, the predisposition of age integrates with a self-organized process to form this reproductive hierarchy. A social insect’s fecundity and fertility signal depends on social context because fecundity increases with colony size. To evaluate how a socially dependent signal regulates dominance behavior, I manipulated a reproductive worker’s social context. Reproductive workers with reduced fecundity and a less prominent fertility signal expressed more dominance behavior than those with a stronger fertility signal and higher fecundity. Therefore, dominance behavior reinforces rank to compensate for a weak signal, indicating how social context can feed back to influence the maintenance of dominance. Mechanisms that regulate H. saltator’s reproductive hierarchy can inform how the reproductive division of labor is regulated in other groups of animals.

Discovering more about social hierarchies within groups of mice and the underlying brain mechanisms supporting differences in dominance is essential to understanding social roles and individuality. In this study, we aimed to discover if a novel dominance assay is able to determine social hierarchies in groups of three, as well as how this novel assay compares to a classic dominance tube test. SLEAP software, a machine learning tool, was used to analyze the behaviors of the mice in the novel dominance apparatus. In addition, cytokine levels were collected from the mice to assess possible correlations between hierarchical standing and presence of inflammatory agents.

Besides acquiring group status via dominance or force, as in other animals, human beings can acquire status via prestige, which follows from other group members valuing one’s expert knowledge. Past research has shown a preference for prestigious leaders over dominant leaders. That is, people prefer leaders who are expert over those who are domineering. In this research, I explored whether the preference for prestige over dominance applies to preferences for actual political figures with facial features that appear dominant or prestigious. I also asked whether the same links between dominance, prestige, and voter preference would hold for both men and women. American participants (recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk) rated European politicians’ faces on traits associated with prestige and dominance and indicated their likelihood of voting for this person as a governor of their state. Findings suggest ratings of both prestige is a strong predictor of leadership preference than dominance. However, strong correlations between variables suggest prestige and dominance are two closely related concepts. In addition, participants indicated a marginal to significant preference for female leaders, depending on their perceived dominance and prestigiousness.
