The fashion industry dubs couture as high fashion, yet couture never reaches the finish line when it comes to comfort. Most of the brand name high heels on the market are too painful to wear for long periods of time. For this project, I have developed 3D printed high heels with detachable insoles that will relieve tired feet based on the principle of reflexology. The product integrates traditional flexible insoles with Arduino computing and the result is a functional surface that can ease the pain of the wearer. This paper introduces the product and with it, under-explored opportunities to customize your own high heels at home. Essentially, each consumer will have the ability to personalize and switch out their style without sacrificing comfort. Soon, a consumer will be a designer.

Many industries require workers in warehouse and stockroom environments to perform frequent lifting tasks. Over time these repeated tasks can lead to excess strain on the worker's body and reduced productivity. This project seeks to develop an exoskeletal wrist fixture to be used in conjunction with a powered exoskeleton arm to aid workers performing box lifting types of tasks. Existing products aimed at improving worker comfort and productivity typically employ either fully powered exoskeleton suits or utilize minimally powered spring arms and/or fixtures. These designs either reduce stress to the user's body through powered arms and grippers operated via handheld controls which have limited functionality, or they use a more minimal setup that reduces some load, but exposes the user's hands and wrists to injury by directing support to the forearm. The design proposed here seeks to strike a balance between size, weight, and power requirements and also proposes a novel wrist exoskeleton design which minimizes stress on the user's wrists by directly interfacing with the object to be picked up. The design of the wrist exoskeleton was approached through initially selecting degrees of freedom and a ROM (range of motion) to accommodate. Feel and functionality were improved through an iterative prototyping process which yielded two primary designs. A novel "clip-in" method was proposed to allow the user to easily attach and detach from the exoskeleton. Designs utilized a contact surface intended to be used with dry fibrillary adhesives to maximize exoskeleton grip. Two final designs, which used two pivots in opposite kinematic order, were constructed and tested to determine the best kinematic layout. The best design had two prototypes created to be worn with passive test arms that attached to the user though a specially designed belt.

Advancements in three-dimensional (3D) additive manufacturing techniques have opened up new possibilities for healthcare systems and the medical industry, allowing for the realization of concepts that were once confined to theoretical discussions. Among these groundbreaking research endeavors is the development of intricate magnetic structures that can be actuated through non-invasive methods, including electromagnetic and magnetic actuation. Magnetic actuation, in particular, offers the advantage of untethered operation. In this study, a photopolymerizable resin infused with Fe3O4 oxide nanoparticles is employed in the printing process using the micro-continuous liquid interface production technique. The objective is to optimize the manufacturing process to produce microstructures featuring smooth surfaces and reduced surface porosity, and enhanced flexibility and magnetic actuation. Various intricate structures are fabricated to validate the printing process's capabilities. Furthermore, the assessment of the flexibilty of these 3D-printed structures is conducted in the presence of an external magnetic field using a homemade bending test setup, allowing for a comprehensive characterization of these components. This research serves as a foundation for the future design and development of micro-robots using micro-continuous liquid interface production technique.

Applications like integrated circuits, microelectromechanical devices, antennas, sensors, actuators, and metamaterials benefit from heterogeneous material systems made of metallic structures and polymer matrixes. Due to their distinctive shells made of metal and polymer, scaly-foot snails, which are found in the deep ocean, exhibit high strength and temperature resistance. Recent metal deposition fabrication techniques have been used to create a variety of multi-material structures. However, using these complex hybrid processes, it is difficult to build complex 3D structures of heterogeneous material with improved properties, high resolution, and time efficiency. The use of electrical field-assisted heterogeneous material printing (EFA-HMP) technology has shown potential in fabricating metal-composite materials with improved mechanical properties and controlled microstructures. The technology is an advanced form of 3D printing that allows for printing multiple materials with different properties in a single print. This allows for the creation of complex and functional structures that are not possible with traditional 3D printing methods. The development of a photocurable printing solution was carried out that can serve as an electrolyte for charge transfer and further research into the printing solution's curing properties was conducted. A fundamental understanding of the formation mechanism of metallic structures on the polymer matrix was investigated through physics-based multiscale modeling and simulations. The relationship between the metallic structure's morphology, the printing solution's properties, and the printing process parameters was discovered.The thesis aims to investigate the microstructures and electrical properties of metal-composite materials fabricated using EFA-HMP technology and to evaluate the correlation between them. Several samples of metal-composite materials with different microstructures will be fabricated using EFA-HMP technology to accomplish this. The results of this study will provide a better understanding of the relationship between the microstructures and properties of metal-composite materials fabricated using EFA-HMP technology and contribute to the development of new and improved materials in various fields of application. Furthermore, this research will also shed light on the advantages and limitations of EFA-HMP technology in fabricating metal-composite materials and study the correlation between the microstructures and mechanical properties.

Stereolithography (SLA) is an innovative additive manufacturing technique that has gained immense popularity in recent times due to its ability to produce complex and precise three-dimensional objects. However, the quality of the final product depends on the stability and homogeneity of the photocurable metallic ink used, which is crucial for manufacturing high-quality parts with good surface finish and higher density. To achieve homogeneity in the photocurable metallic resin, the study conducted on optimizing the printing ink for ultrafast layer less fabrication of 3D metal objects investigated the effectiveness of different dispersants such as KH 560, Triton X-100, BYK 2013, BYK 2030, and BYK 111. The use of dispersants plays a vital role in optimizing the ink and enhancing the surface finish and density of the final product. The rheology results showed that the appropriate dispersant has the potential to improve the properties of the printing ink and benefit the integrity of the printed green bodies and their surface finish. By using the optimized suspension, the study was able to fabricate parts with high metallic loading at an ultrafast speed using the Continuous Liquid Interface Production technique. FTIR analysis, sedimentation testing, and rheology study has been carried out which demonstrates the effects of the utilization of various dispersants optimally to improve the homogeneity and manufactured part’s integrity. Power law has been used to understand the viscosity behavior of dispersants in a photocurable ink with copper sulfate keeping the parameters such as shearing rate, stress, and torque intact. The microscopic images of the sintered parts showed high precision and an extremely smooth surface finish, which underscores the technique's potential to produce high-quality 3D metal objects. The solubility of dispersants significantly influenced the structural quality after washing and debinding processes. This study provides valuable information to design photocurable metallic suspensions for metal salts like copper sulfate pentahydrate.

The increased risk of falling and the worse ability to perform other daily physical activities in the elderly cause concern about monitoring and correcting basic everyday movement. In this thesis, a Kinect-based system was designed to assess one of the most important factors in balance control of human body when doing Sit-to-Stand (STS) movement: the postural symmetry in mediolateral direction. A symmetry score, calculated by the data obtained from a Kinect RGB-D camera, was proposed to reflect the mediolateral postural symmetry degree and was used to drive a real-time audio feedback designed in MAX/MSP to help users adjust themselves to perform their movement in a more symmetrical way during STS. The symmetry score was verified by calculating the Spearman correlation coefficient with the data obtained from Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) sensor and got an average value at 0.732. Five healthy adults, four males and one female, with normal balance abilities and with no musculoskeletal disorders, were selected to participate in the experiment and the results showed that the low-cost Kinect-based system has the potential to train users to perform a more symmetrical movement in mediolateral direction during STS movement.

Although tremor, rigidity, and bradykinesia are cardinal symptoms of Parkinson's disease (PD), impairments of gait and balance significantly affect quality of life, especially as the disease progresses, and do not respond well to anti-parkinsonism medications. Many studies have shown that people with PD can walk better when appropriate cues are presented but, to the best of our knowledge, the effects of real-time feedback of step length and uprightness of posture on gait and posture have not been specifically investigated. If it can be demonstrated that real-time feedback can improve posture and gait, the resultant knowledge could be used to design effective rehabilitation strategies to improve quality of life in this population.

In this feasibility study, we have developed a treadmill-based experimental paradigm to provide feedback of step length and upright posture in real-time. Ten subjects (mean age 65.9 ± 7.6 years) with mild to moderate PD (Hoehn and Yahr stage III or below) were evaluated in their ability to successfully utilize real-time feedback presented during quiet standing and treadmill walking tasks during a single data collection session in their medication-on state. During quiet standing tasks in which back angle feedback was provided, subjects were asked to utilize the feedback to maintain upright posture. During treadmill walking tasks, subjects walked at their self-selected speed for five minutes without feedback, with feedback of back angle, or with feedback of step length. During walking tasks with back angle feedback, subjects were asked to utilize the feedback to maintain upright posture. During walking tasks with step length feedback, subjects were asked to utilize the feedback to walk with increased step length. During quiet standing tasks, measurements of back angle were obtained; during walking tasks, measurements of back angle, step length, and step time were obtained.

Subjects stood and walked with significantly increased upright posture during the tasks with real-time back angle feedback compared to tasks without feedback. Similarly, subjects walked with significantly increased step length during tasks with real-time step length feedback compared to tasks without feedback. These results demonstrate that people with PD can utilize real-time feedback to improve upright posture and gait.

The current push towards integrating new digital fabrication techniques into all parts of daily life has raised concerns about the changing role of the craftsperson in creative making. The goal of this dissertation is to gain insight into how new technologies can be incorporated into creative practices in a way that effectively supports the goals and workflows of practitioners. To do so, I explore three different cases in which 3D printing, a tool by which complex 3D objects are fabricated from digital designs, is used in tandem with traditional creative practices. Each project focuses on a different way to incorporate 3D printed objects, whether it be as a visualization for artists’ processes, a substitute medium for finished artworks, or as a step toward a larger fabrication workflow. Through this research, I discover how the integration of 3D printing affects creative processes, explore how these changes influence how and why practitioners engage in artistic practices, and gain insight into directions for future technological innovations.

The goal of the presented research is using Electro Field-assisted Nano Ink Writing(EF-NIW) to deposit poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate, or PEDOT, on a substrate to serve as a basis for designing high-efficiency, scalable solar cells. Through the analysis of parameters that affect electrospray deposition, methods to accurately produce a PEDOT film will be determined. With the finished, contingent film, tests for efficacy can be performed. The film will be analyzed for profilometry, determining the thickness of the film. The film will then be put up to a conductivity test.
