For CFD validation, hypersonic flow fields are simulated and compared with experimental data specifically designed to recreate conditions found by hypersonic vehicles. Simulated flow fields on a cone-ogive with flare at Mach 7.2 are compared with experimental data from NASA Ames Research Center 3.5" hypersonic wind tunnel. A parametric study of turbulence models is presented and concludes that the k-kl-omega transition and SST transition turbulence model have the best correlation. Downstream of the flare's shockwave, good correlation is found for all boundary layer profiles, with some slight discrepancies of the static temperature near the surface. Simulated flow fields on a blunt cone with flare above Mach 10 are compared with experimental data from CUBRC LENS hypervelocity shock tunnel. Lack of vibrational non-equilibrium calculations causes discrepancies in heat flux near the leading edge. Temperature profiles, where non-equilibrium effects are dominant, are compared with the dissociation of molecules to show the effects of dissociation on static temperature. Following the validation studies is a parametric analysis of a hypersonic inlet from Mach 6 to 20. Compressor performance is investigated for numerous cowl leading edge locations up to speeds of Mach 10. The variable cowl study showed positive trends in compressor performance parameters for a range of Mach numbers that arise from maximizing the intake of compressed flow. An interesting phenomenon due to the change in shock wave formation for different Mach numbers developed inside the cowl that had a negative influence on the total pressure recovery. Investigation of the hypersonic inlet at different altitudes is performed to study the effects of Reynolds number, and consequently, turbulent viscous effects on compressor performance. Turbulent boundary layer separation was noted as the cause for a change in compressor performance parameters due to a change in Reynolds number. This effect would not be noticeable if laminar flow was assumed. Mach numbers up to 20 are investigated to study the effects of vibrational and chemical non-equilibrium on compressor performance. A direct impact on the trends on the kinetic energy efficiency and compressor efficiency was found due to dissociation.

Stereolithography files (STL) are widely used in diverse fields as a means of describing complex geometries through surface triangulations. The resulting stereolithography output is a result of either experimental measurements, or computer-aided design. Often times stereolithography outputs from experimental means are prone to noise, surface irregularities and holes in an otherwise closed surface.

A general method for denoising and adaptively smoothing these dirty stereolithography files is proposed. Unlike existing means, this approach aims to smoothen the dirty surface representation by utilizing the well established levelset method. The level of smoothing and denoising can be set depending on a per-requirement basis by means of input parameters. Once the surface representation is smoothened as desired, it can be extracted as a standard levelset scalar isosurface.

The approach presented in this thesis is also coupled to a fully unstructured Cartesian mesh generation library with built-in localized adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) capabilities, thereby ensuring lower computational cost while also providing sufficient resolution. Future work will focus on implementing tetrahedral cuts to the base hexahedral mesh structure in order to extract a fully unstructured hexahedra-dominant mesh describing the STL geometry, which can be used for fluid flow simulations.

Simulation were used to calculate the nutrient uptake for both motile and non-motile bacterial

species and by applying the dynamical systems theory the effect of flow topology on the

variability of chemotaxis is analyzed. It is done by injecting a highly localized patch of nutrient

in the turbulent flow, and analyzing the evolution of reaction associated with the observed

high and low stretching regions. The Gaussian nutrient patch is released at different locations

and the corresponding nutrient uptake is obtained. The variable stretching characteristics of

the flow is depicted by Lagrangian Coherent Structures and the roles they play in affecting the

uptake are analyzed. The Lagrangian Coherent Structures are quantified by the Finite Time

Lyapunov Exponents which is a measure of the average stretching experienced by the flow in

finite time. It is found that in high stretching regions, the motile bacteria are attracted to the

nutrient patch very quickly, but also dispersed quickly; whereas in low stretching regions the

bacteria respond slower towards the nutrient patch. However the total uptake is intricately

determined by stretching history. These reaction characteristics are reflected in the several

realizations of simulations. This helps in understanding turbulence intensity and how it affects

the uptake of the nutrient.

This thesis describes a longitudinal dynamic analysis of a large, twin-fuselage aircraft that is connected solely by the main wing with two tails unattached by a horizontal stabilizer. The goal of the analysis is to predict the aircraft’s behavior in various flight conditions. Starting with simple force diagrams of the longitudinal directions, six equations of motion are derived: three equations defining the left fuselage’s motion and three equations defining the right fuselage’s motion. The derivation uses a state-vector approach. Linearization of the system utilizes a Taylor series expansion about different trim points to analyze the aircraft for small disturbances about the equilibrium. The state transition matrix shows that there is a coupling effect from the reactionary moments caused by the two empennages through the connection of the main wing. By analyzing the system in multiple flight conditions: take-off, climb, cruise, and post-separation of payload, a general flight envelope can be developed which will give insight as to how the aircraft will behave and the overall controllability of the aircraft. The four flight conditions are tested with published Boeing 747 data confirmed from multiple sources. All four flight conditions contain unstable phugoid modes that imply instability increases with decreasing torsional spring stiffness of the wing or as the structural damping drops below 4%.

The effect of reduced frequency on dynamic stall behavior of a pitching NACA0012 airfoil in a turbulent wake using Direct Numerical Simulations is presented in the current study. Upstream turbulence with dynamically oscillating blades and airfoils is associated with ambient flow unsteadiness and is encountered in many operating conditions. Wake turbulence, a more realistic scenario for airfoils in operation, is generated using a small solid cylinder placed upstream, the vortices shed from which interact with the pitching airfoil affecting dynamic stall behavior.

A recently developed moving overlapping grid approach is used using a high-order Spectral Element Method (SEM) for spatial discretization combined with a dynamic time-stepping procedure allowing for up to third order temporal discretization. Two cases of reduced frequency (k = 0:16 and 0:25) for airfoil oscillation are investigated and the change in dynamic stall behavior with change in reduced frequency is studied and documented using flow-fields and aerodynamic coefficients (Drag, Lift and Pitching Moment) with a focus on understanding vortex system dynamics (including formation of secondary vortices) for different reduced frequencies and it’s affect on airfoil aerodynamic characteristics and fatigue life. Transition of the flow over the surface of an airfoil for both undisturbed and disturbed flow cases will also be discussed using Pressure coefficient and Skin Friction coefficient data for a given cycle combined with a wavelet analysis using Morse wavelets in MATLAB.

This thesis discusses the equilibrium conditions and static stability of a rotorcraft kite with a single main tether flying in steady wind conditions. A dynamic model with five degrees of freedom is derived using Lagrangian formulation, which explicitly avoids any constraint force in the equations of motion. The longitudinal static stability of the steady flight under constant wind conditions is analyzed analytically from the equilibrium conditions. The rotorcraft kite orientation and tether angle are correlated through the equation Γ=δ-ϑ, a necessary condition for equilibrium. A rotorcraft kite design with 3kg mass and 1.25m rotor radius is found to be longitudinally statically stable at 25,000ft with Γ>〖65〗^0 for wind speeds above 19m/s.

An airborne, tethered, multi-rotor wind turbine, effectively a rotorcraft kite, provides one platform for accessing the energy in high altitude winds. The craft is maintained at altitude by its rotors operating in autorotation, and its equilibrium attitude and dynamic performance are affected by the aerodynamic rotor forces, which in turn are affected by the orientation and motion of the craft. The aerodynamic performance of such rotors can vary significantly depending on orientation, influencing the efficiency of the system. This thesis analyzes the aerodynamic performance of an autorotating rotor through a range of angles of attack covering those experienced by a typical autogyro through that of a horizontal-axis wind turbine. To study the behavior of such rotors, an analytical model using the blade element theory coupled with momentum theory was developed. The model uses a rigid-rotor assumption and is nominally limited to cases of small induced inflow angle and constant induced velocity. The model allows for linear twist. In order to validate the model, several rotors -- off-the-shelf model-aircraft propellers -- were tested in a low speed wind tunnel. Custom built mounts allowed rotor angles of attack from 0 to 90 degrees in the test section, providing data for lift, drag, thrust, horizontal force, and angular velocity. Experimental results showed increasing thrust and angular velocity with rising pitch angles, whereas the in-plane horizontal force peaked and dropped after a certain value. The analytical results revealed a disagreement with the experimental trends, especially at high pitch angles. The discrepancy was attributed to the rotor operating in turbulent wake and vortex ring states at high pitch angles, where momentum theory has proven to be invalid. Also, aerodynamic design constants, which are not precisely known for the test propellers, have an underlying effect on the analytical model. The developments of the thesis suggest that a different analytical model may be needed for high rotor angles of attack. However, adding a term for resisting torque to the model gives analytical results that are similar to the experimental values.

Modern aircraft propulsion systems such as the ultra high bypass ratio turbofan impose constraints on engine installation below the wing, causing jet–wing interactions. Similar interactions are encountered when a jet-powered aircraft takes off on airport runway or aircraft carrier deck. High-speed jet flow near a solid surface shows markedly different turbulence characteristics compared with free jet, including attached turbulent jet and development of non-equilibrium boundary layer down- stream. Wall pressure fluctuations tend to be more unsteady and stronger, leading to increased vibration affecting aircraft cabin noise and modified jet noise radiation. Large-eddy simulation (LES) is useful to characterize turbulent jet flows over a solid surface as well as wall pressure distribution to promote physical understanding and modeling studies. In this study, LES is performed for an installed setup of a Mach 0.7 turbulent jet where the jet–plate distance is fixed at 2D where D is the nozzle-exit diameter. Unstructured-grid LES is used to validate the corresponding experiment (from literature). In addition, a high-fidelity numerical database is built for further analysis and modeling. Turbulence statistics and energy spectra show that agreement with the experimental measurement for the installed case is encouraging, paving a way for future analysis and modeling.
