Algorithmic composition techniques are used here as a tool in composing the pieces, but are not the main focus. Thematically, this project explores the analogy between artificial neural networks and neural activity in the brain. This project consists of three short pieces, each exploring these concept in different ways.

Only in recent decades have music libraries become more aware of the importance of preservation of musical scores and materials in their collections. It follows that the preservation goals in a library differ from those in a museum due to the specific purpose of the collecting institution. As a student of paper conservation in an art museum setting and a musician with classical training, I wanted to investigate the scope of art conservation as it applies to cultural heritage objects outside the realm of works of visual art in a museum—namely the musical scores and ephemera contained in the Bavicchi archive in the ASU Music Library Special Collections. The archive is a large, unexplored collection of materials pertaining to approximately ninety opuses composed by the teacher, conductor, and composer, John A. Bavicchi (1922-2012). These materials include final scores, drafts of scores, preliminary sketches, programs from performances, correspondence, news publications, publishing agreements, and financial records. Although these types of ephemera materials are transitory by nature and pose considerable problems for the institution responsible for their preservation, the goal of this project is to demonstrate the importance of preserving non-art objects related to non-visual artforms in a music library context, to show the value of musical ephemera in general, and to advocate for the care of the Bavicchi archive in particular. Using one Bavicchi composition, Opus 51, as a case study from which to develop a protocol for the preservation of the rest of the archive, I made an inventory of all seventy-four objects pertaining to Opus 51, executed and documented conservation treatment, and implemented proper housing for all objects. Making sure to consider how and where these archival materials are most likely to be used—for scholarly research in a music library—I established guidelines for evaluating condition and assigning treatment priority, provided descriptions of relevant remedial treatment procedures, and recommended rehousing and potential preservation practices. Additionally, I offered justification for my conservation work through the contextualization of the archival materials relating to Opus 51. I provided an initial musical analysis of the archival materials and compared the informational content of the Opus 51 ephemera to general information gathered from outside sources, with the intention of illustrating the need to preserve these materials in order to better understand Bavicchi’s compositional process and the public reception of his work.

Light Emerging is a symphonic dance suite in five movements. The work’s approximate length is 25 minutes; it is scored for flute, oboe, clarinet in Bb, bassoon, horn in F, trumpet in C with loop pedal, trombone, percussion, electronic percussion, piano, strings, and fixed media. Each movement of the dance suite is written to be performed as a standalone piece or together as one multimovement work. The music showcases open quintal sonorities layered in conflicting substructures, which contract into denser brooding passages and transform into tonal fanfares.

Attempting to capture the essence of how humanity uniquely experiences light and assigns personification to it, the composer presents light and dark as the main characters in a grand ballet of good and evil. Prism (Movement I) is an overture that is constantly shifting and evolving. A rainbow of colors is presented by the various orchestra members, as timbral and pitch evolutions showcase the ever-changing perspectives of a prism held to light. Yin/Yang (Movement II) explores the relationship between light and dark. The solo clarinet represents light breaking through the darkness as its colorful flourishes pierce through the brooding fixed media. Sunrise (Movement III) captures the impressive majesty of light bursting over the dark horizon in the early morning. Lux (Movement IV) is a dance of light, using solo trumpet and a chorus of phantom trumpets. Light Eternal (Movement V) expresses the deep need for humans to worship that which is unknown and eternal, and the power of light to overcome the dark. The “March of Eternal Light” signals our end in this world and the journey to the beyond.

As clarinet students progress in their studies, there comes a point at which many are assigned to perform contemporary repertoire that is either overplayed due to accessibility and use in pedagogy, or includes difficult extended techniques like microtones, multiphonics, and more. This project identifies a “gap” in unaccompanied clarinet repertoire and seeks to expand this repertoire by outlining a program of study featuring five newly commissioned unaccompanied clarinet solos through which students can learn both traditional and untraditional techniques. Each of the first four works focus on one aspect of clarinet technique—musicality, the altissimo register, microtones, and multiphonics, respectively—and the final work is a culmination of all these techniques. Included in this document is biographical information for each composer, program notes, a brief description, and a performance guide for each piece. Additionally, each work was recorded by the author and included with this document.

ABSTRACT

Music therapy is a highly effective treatment when used in the care of persons with dementia (PWD) and singing in particular is found to be calming and pleasurable to PWD. Seniorsing.net is a music-based application for use in memory care that provides a fun and interactive sing along activity for PWD. Developed by a music therapist, the application is designed to engage the user in singing along with recorded song performances while lyrics are displayed on the device screen. Seniorsing.net is accessible on any mobile device and is intended to provide a positive musical experience for PWD, whether listening or singing along. This study was conducted to test the design aspects of the application for use with PWD and their caregivers. Eighteen dyads of participants/caregivers were recruited from the senior community. Participants were observed interacting with seniorsing.net by the music therapist to provide an understanding of the usability of seniorsing.net and to collect information on the responses of PWD to seniorsing.net. Caregivers were given the opportunity to evaluate seniorsing.net via survey. The parameters that were measured included visual clarity and appeal, audibility, clarity of directions and usability by PWD and their caregivers. Observations of participants showed positive interactions with the application. Over 64% of participants independently engaged in singing with the application and over 50% of participants were able to activate features of the application with minimal assistance. Caregiver feedback was also positive. Most caregivers strongly agreed or agreed to the effectiveness of the design and its ease of use with PWD. 100% of caregivers found the song performances to be appropriate and comfortable to follow and sing. Caregivers gave suggestions for improvement of seniorsing.net, such as including more song choices and having more written directions on some of the screens. In conclusion, seniorsing.net was found to be enjoyable and easy to use by PWD and their caregivers.
