The focus of this investigation is on the renewed assessment of nonlinear reduced order models (ROM) for the accurate prediction of the geometrically nonlinear response of a curved beam. In light of difficulties encountered in an earlier modeling effort, the various steps involved in the construction of the reduced order model are carefully reassessed. The selection of the basis functions is first addressed by comparison with the results of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis. The normal basis functions suggested earlier, i.e. the transverse linear modes of the corresponding flat beam, are shown in fact to be very close to the POD eigenvectors of the normal displacements and thus retained in the present effort. A strong connection is similarly established between the POD eigenvectors of the tangential displacements and the dual modes which are accordingly selected to complement the normal basis functions. The identification of the parameters of the reduced order model is revisited next and it is observed that the standard approach for their identification does not capture well the occurrence of snap-throughs. On this basis, a revised approach is proposed which is assessed first on the static, symmetric response of the beam to a uniform load. A very good to excellent matching between full finite element and ROM predicted responses validates the new identification procedure and motivates its application to the dynamic response of the beam which exhibits both symmetric and antisymmetric motions. While not quite as accurate as in the static case, the reduced order model predictions match well their full Nastran counterparts and support the reduced order model development strategy.

Over the past few decades there has been significant interest in the design and construction of hypersonic vehicles. Such vehicles exhibit strongly coupled aerodynamics, acoustics, heat transfer, and structural deformations, which can take significant computational efforts to simulate using standard finite element and computational fluid dynamics techniques. This situation has lead to development of various reduced order modelling (ROM) methods which reduce the parameter space of these simulations so they can be run more quickly. The planned hypersonic vehicles will be constructed by assembling a series of sub-structures, such as panels and stiffeners, that will be welded together creating built-up structures.In this light, the focus of the present investigation is on the formulation and validation of nonlinear reduced order models (NLROMs) of built-up structures that include nonlinear geometric effects induced by the large loads/large response. Moreover, it is recognized that gaps between sub-structures could result from the these intense loadings can thus the inclusion of the nonlinearity introduced by contact separation will also be addressed. These efforts, application to built-up structures and inclusion of contact nonlinearity, represent novel developments of existing NLROM strategies. A hat stiffened panel is selected as a representative example of built-up structure and a compact NRLOM is successfully constructed for this structure which exhibited a potential internal resonance. For the investigation of contact nonlinearity, two structural models were used: a cantilevered beam which can contact several stops and an overlapping plate model which can exhibit the opening/closing of a gap. Successful NLROMs were constructed for these structures with the basis for the plate model determined as a two-step process, i.e., considering the plate without gap first and then enriching the corresponding basis to account for opening of the gap. Adaptions were then successfully made to a Newton-Raphson solver to properly account for contact and the associated forces in static predictions by NLROMs.

Civil infrastructures are susceptible to damage under the events of natural or manmade disasters. Over the last two decades, the use of emerging engineering materials, such as the fiber-reinforced plastics (FRPs), in structural retrofitting have gained significant popularity. However, due to their inherent brittleness and lack of energy dissipation, undesirable failure modes of the FRP-retrofitted systems, such as sudden laminate fracture and debonding, have been frequently observed. In this light, a Carbon-fiber reinforced Hybrid-polymeric Matrix Composite (or CHMC) was developed to provide a superior, yet affordable, solution for infrastructure damage mitigation and protection. The microstructural and micromechanical characteristics of the CHMC was investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nanoindentation technique. The mechanical performance, such as damping, was identified using free and forced vibration tests. A simplified analytical model based on micromechanics was developed to predict the laminate stiffness using the modulus profile tested by the nanoindentation. The prediction results were verified by the flexural modulus calculated from the vibration tests. The feasibility of using CHMC to retrofit damaged structural systems was investigated via a series of structural component level tests. The effectiveness of using CHMC versus conventional carbon-fiber reinforced epoxy (CF/ epoxy) to retrofit notch damaged steel beams were tested. The comparison of the test results indicated the superior deformation capacity of the CHMC retrofitted beams. The full field strain distributions near the critical notch tip region were experimentally determined by the digital imaging correlation (DIC), and the results matched well with the finite element analysis (FEA) results. In the second series of tests, the application of CHMC was expanded to retrofit the full-scale fatigue-damaged concrete-encased steel (or SRC) girders. Similar to the notched steel beam tests, the CHMC retrofitted SRC girders exhibited substantially better post-peak load ductility than that of CF/ epoxy retrofitted girder. Lastly, a quasi-static push over test on the CHMC retrofitted reinforced concrete shear wall further highlighted the CHMC's capability of enhancing the deformation and energy dissipating potential of the damaged civil infrastructure systems. Analytical and numerical models were developed to assist the retrofitting design using the newly developed CHMC material.
