Access to real-time situational information including the relative position and motion of surrounding objects is critical for safe and independent travel. Object or obstacle (OO) detection at a distance is primarily a task of the visual system due to the high resolution information the eyes are able to receive from afar. As a sensory organ in particular, the eyes have an unparalleled ability to adjust to varying degrees of light, color, and distance. Therefore, in the case of a non-visual traveler, someone who is blind or low vision, access to visual information is unattainable if it is positioned beyond the reach of the preferred mobility device or outside the path of travel. Although, the area of assistive technology in terms of electronic travel aids (ETA’s) has received considerable attention over the last two decades; surprisingly, the field has seen little work in the area focused on augmenting rather than replacing current non-visual travel techniques, methods, and tools. Consequently, this work describes the design of an intuitive tactile language and series of wearable tactile interfaces (the Haptic Chair, HaptWrap, and HapBack) to deliver real-time spatiotemporal data. The overall intuitiveness of the haptic mappings conveyed through the tactile interfaces are evaluated using a combination of absolute identification accuracy of a series of patterns and subjective feedback through post-experiment surveys. Two types of spatiotemporal representations are considered: static patterns representing object location at a single time instance, and dynamic patterns, added in the HaptWrap, which represent object movement over a time interval. Results support the viability of multi-dimensional haptics applied to the body to yield an intuitive understanding of dynamic interactions occurring around the navigator during travel. Lastly, it is important to point out that the guiding principle of this work centered on providing the navigator with spatial knowledge otherwise unattainable through current mobility techniques, methods, and tools, thus, providing the \emph{navigator} with the information necessary to make informed navigation decisions independently, at a distance.

In recent years, Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have been widely used in not only the computer vision community but also within the medical imaging community. Specifically, the use of pre-trained CNNs on large-scale datasets (e.g., ImageNet) via transfer learning for a variety of medical imaging applications, has become the de facto standard within both communities.

However, to fit the current paradigm, 3D imaging tasks have to be reformulated and solved in 2D, losing rich 3D contextual information. Moreover, pre-trained models on natural images never see any biomedical images and do not have knowledge about anatomical structures present in medical images. To overcome the above limitations, this thesis proposes an image out-painting self-supervised proxy task to develop pre-trained models directly from medical images without utilizing systematic annotations. The idea is to randomly mask an image and train the model to predict the missing region. It is demonstrated that by predicting missing anatomical structures when seeing only parts of the image, the model will learn generic representation yielding better performance on various medical imaging applications via transfer learning.

The extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed proxy task outperforms training from scratch in six out of seven medical imaging applications covering 2D and 3D classification and segmentation. Moreover, image out-painting proxy task offers competitive performance to state-of-the-art models pre-trained on ImageNet and other self-supervised baselines such as in-painting. Owing to its outstanding performance, out-painting is utilized as one of the self-supervised proxy tasks to provide generic 3D pre-trained models for medical image analysis.

There is intense interest in adopting computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems, particularly those developed based on deep learning algorithms, for applications in a number of medical specialties. However, success of these CAD systems relies heavily on large annotated datasets; otherwise, deep learning often results in algorithms that perform poorly and lack generalizability. Therefore, this dissertation seeks to address this critical problem: How to develop efficient and effective deep learning algorithms for medical applications where large annotated datasets are unavailable. In doing so, we have outlined three specific aims: (1) acquiring necessary annotations efficiently from human experts; (2) utilizing existing annotations effectively from advanced architecture; and (3) extracting generic knowledge directly from unannotated images. Our extensive experiments indicate that, with a small part of the dataset annotated, the developed deep learning methods can match, or even outperform those that require annotating the entire dataset. The last part of this dissertation presents the importance and application of imaging in healthcare, elaborating on how the developed techniques can impact several key facets of the CAD system for detecting pulmonary embolism. Further research is necessary to determine the feasibility of applying these advanced deep learning technologies in clinical practice, particularly when annotation is limited. Progress in this area has the potential to enable deep learning algorithms to generalize to real clinical data and eventually allow CAD systems to be employed in clinical medicine at the point of care.

In

Open Design is a crowd-driven global ecosystem which tries to challenge and alter contemporary modes of capitalistic hardware production. It strives to build on the collective skills, expertise and efforts of people regardless of their educational, social or political backgrounds to develop and disseminate physical products, machines and systems. In contrast to capitalistic hardware production, Open Design practitioners publicly share design files, blueprints and knowhow through various channels including internet platforms and in-person workshops. These designs are typically replicated, modified, improved and reshared by individuals and groups who are broadly referred to as ‘makers’.

This dissertation aims to expand the current scope of Open Design within human-computer interaction (HCI) research through a long-term exploration of Open Design’s socio-technical processes. I examine Open Design from three perspectives: the functional—materials, tools, and platforms that enable crowd-driven open hardware production, the critical—materially-oriented engagements within open design as a site for sociotechnical discourse, and the speculative—crowd-driven critical envisioning of future hardware.

More specifically, this dissertation first explores the growing global scene of Open Design through a long-term ethnographic study of the open science hardware (OScH) movement, a genre of Open Design. This long-term study of OScH provides a focal point for HCI to deeply understand Open Design's growing global landscape. Second, it examines the application of Critical Making within Open Design through an OScH workshop with designers, engineers, artists and makers from local communities. This work foregrounds the role of HCI researchers as facilitators of collaborative critical engagements within Open Design. Third, this dissertation introduces the concept of crowd-driven Design Fiction through the development of a publicly accessible online Design Fiction platform named Dream Drones. Through a six month long development and a study with drone related practitioners, it offers several pragmatic insights into the challenges and opportunities for crowd-driven Design Fiction. Through these explorations, I highlight the broader implications and novel research pathways for HCI to shape and be shaped by the global Open Design movement.

Cameras have become commonplace with wide-ranging applications of phone photography, computer vision, and medical imaging. With a growing need to reduce size and costs while maintaining image quality, the need to look past traditional style of cameras is becoming more apparent. Several non-traditional cameras have shown to be promising options for size-constraint applications, and while they may offer several advantages, they also usually are limited by image quality degradation due to optical or a need to reconstruct a captured image. In this thesis, we take a look at three of these non-traditional cameras: a pinhole camera, a diffusion-mask lensless camera, and an under-display camera (UDC).

For each of these cases, I present a feasible image restoration pipeline to correct for their particular limitations. For the pinhole camera, I present an early pipeline to allow for practical pinhole photography by reducing noise levels caused by low-light imaging, enhancing exposure levels, and sharpening the blur caused by the pinhole. For lensless cameras, we explore a neural network architecture that performs joint image reconstruction and point spread function (PSF) estimation to robustly recover images captured with multiple PSFs from different cameras. Using adversarial learning, this approach achieves improved reconstruction results that do not require explicit knowledge of the PSF at test-time and shows an added improvement in the reconstruction model’s ability to generalize to variations in the camera’s PSF. This allows lensless cameras to be utilized in a wider range of applications that require multiple cameras without the need to explicitly train a separate model for each new camera. For UDCs, we utilize a multi-stage approach to correct for low light transmission, blur, and haze. This pipeline uses a PyNET deep neural network architecture to perform a majority of the restoration, while additionally using a traditional optimization approach which is then fused in a learned manner in the second stage to improve high-frequency features. I show results from this novel fusion approach that is on-par with the state of the art.

In brain imaging study, 3D surface-based algorithms may provide more advantages over volume-based methods, due to their sub-voxel accuracy to represent subtle subregional changes and solid mathematical foundations on which global shape analyses can be achieved on complicated topological structures, such as the convoluted cortical surfaces. On the other hand, given the enormous amount of data being generated daily, it is still challenging to develop effective and efficient surface-based methods to analyze brain shape morphometry. There are two major problems in surface-based shape analysis research: correspondence and similarity. This dissertation covers both topics by proposing novel surface registration and indexing algorithms based on conformal geometry for brain morphometry analysis.

First, I propose a surface fluid registration system, which extends the traditional image fluid registration to surfaces. With surface conformal parameterization, the complexity of the proposed registration formula has been greatly reduced, compared to prior methods. Inverse consistency is also incorporated to drive a symmetric correspondence between surfaces. After registration, the multivariate tensor-based morphometry (mTBM) is computed to measure local shape deformations. The algorithm was applied to study hippocampal atrophy associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Next, I propose a ventricular surface registration algorithm based on hyperbolic Ricci flow, which computes a global conformal parameterization for each ventricular surface without introducing any singularity. Furthermore, in the parameter space, unique hyperbolic geodesic curves are introduced to guide consistent correspondences across subjects, a technique called geodesic curve lifting. Tensor-based morphometry (TBM) statistic is computed from the registration to measure shape changes. This algorithm was applied to study ventricular enlargement in mild cognitive impatient (MCI) converters.

Finally, a new shape index, the hyperbolic Wasserstein distance, is introduced. This algorithm computes the Wasserstein distance between general topological surfaces as a shape similarity measure of different surfaces. It is based on hyperbolic Ricci flow, hyperbolic harmonic map, and optimal mass transportation map, which is extended to hyperbolic space. This method fills a gap in the Wasserstein distance study, where prior work only dealt with images or genus-0 closed surfaces. The algorithm was applied in an AD vs. control cortical shape classification study and achieved promising accuracy rate.

Generalized concepts are used to overcome this problem. Generalization may result into word sense disambiguation failing to find similarity. This is addressed by taking into account contextual synonyms. Concept discovery based on contextual synonyms reveal information about the semantic roles of the words leading to concepts. Merger engine generalize the concepts so that it can be used as features in learning algorithms.
