Membrane-based technology for gas separations is currently at an emerging stage of advancement and adoption for environmental and industrial applications due to its substantial advantages like lower energy and operating costs over the conventional gas separation technologies. Unfortunately, the available polymeric (or organic) membranes suffer a trade-off between permeance and selectivity. Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) containing two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as fillers are a highly sought approach to redress this trade-off given their enhanced gas permeabilities and selectivities compared to the pure polymeric membrane. These MMMs are increasingly gaining attention by researchers due to their unique properties and wide small- and large-scale gas separation applications. However, straightforward and scalable methods for the synthesis of MOFs nanosheets have thus far been persistently elusive. This study reports the single-phase preparation, and characterization of MMMs with 2D MOFs nanosheets as fillers. The prepared MOF and the polymer matrix form the ‘dense’ MMMs which exhibit increased gas diffusion resistance, and thus improved separation abilities. The single-phase approach was more successful than the bi-phase at synthesizing the MOFs. The influence of sonication power and time on the characteristics and performance of the membranes are examined and discussed. Increasing the sonication power from 50% to 100% reduces the pore size. Additionally, the ultimate effect on the selectivity and permeance of the MMMs with different single gases is reported. Analysis of results with various gas mixers indicates further performance improvements in these MMMs could be achieved by increasing sonication time and tuning suitable membrane thicknesses. Reported results reveal that MMMs are excellent candidates for next-generation gas mixture separations, with potential applications in CO2 capture and storage, hydrogen recovery, alkene recovery from alkanes, and natural gas purification.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a new set of porous materials comprised of metals or metal clusters bonded together in a coordination system by organic linkers. They are becoming popular for gas separations due to their abilities to be tailored toward specific applications. Zirconium MOFs in particular are known for their high stability under standard temperature and pressure due to the strength of the Zirconium-Oxygen coordination bond. However, the acid modulator needed to ensure long range order of the product also prevents complete linker deprotonation. This leads to a powder product that cannot easily be incorporated into continuous MOF membranes. This study therefore implemented a new bi-phase synthesis technique with a deprotonating agent to achieve intergrowth in UiO-66 membranes. Crystal intergrowth will allow for effective gas separations and future permeation testing. During experimentation, successful intergrown UiO-66 membranes were synthesized and characterized. The degree of intergrowth and crystal orientations varied with changing deprotonating agent concentration, modulator concentration, and ligand:modulator ratios. Further studies will focus on achieving the same results on porous substrates.

Widespread knowledge of fracture mechanics is mostly based on previous models that generalize crack growth in materials over several loading cycles. The objective of this project is to characterize crack growth that occurs in titanium alloys, specifically Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, at the sub-cycle scale, or within a single loading cycle.

Widespread knowledge of fracture mechanics is mostly based on previous models that generalize crack growth in materials over several loading cycles. The objective of this project is to characterize crack growth that occurs in titanium alloys, specifically Grade 5 Ti-6Al-4V, at the sub-cycle scale, or within a single loading cycle. Using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), imaging analysis is performed to observe crack behavior at ten loading steps throughout the loading and unloading paths. Analysis involves measuring the incremental crack growth and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of specimens at loading ratios of 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5. This report defines the relationship between crack growth and the stress intensity factor, K, of the specimens, as well as the relationship between the R-ratio and stress opening level. The crack closure phenomena and effect of microcracks are discussed as they influence the crack growth behavior. This method has previously been used to characterize crack growth in Al 7075-T6. The results for Ti-6Al-4V are compared to these previous findings in order to strengthen conclusions about crack growth behavior.

Applications such as heat exchangers, surface-based cellular structures, rotating blades, and waveguides rely on thin metal walls as crucial constituent elements of the structure. The design freedom enabled by laser powder bed fusion has led to an interest in exploiting this technology to further the performance of these components, many of which retain their as-built surface morphologies on account of their design complexity. However, there is limited understanding of how and why mechanical properties vary by wall thickness for specimens that are additively manufactured and maintain an as-printed surface finish. Critically, the contributions of microstructure and morphology to the mechanical behavior of thin wall laser powder bed fusion structures have yet to be systematically identified and decoupled. This work focuses on elucidating the room temperature quasi-static tensile and high cycle fatigue properties of as-printed, thin-wall Inconel 718 fabricated using laser powder bed fusion, with the aim of addressing this critical gap in the literature. Wall thicknesses studied range from 0.3 - 2.0 mm, and the effects of Hot Isostatic Pressing are also examined, with sheet metal specimens used as a baseline for comparison. Statistical analyses are conducted to identify the significance of the dependence of properties on wall thickness and Hot Isostatic Pressing, as well as to examine correlations of these properties to section area, porosity, and surface roughness. A thorough microstructural study is complemented with a first-of-its-kind study of surface morphology to decouple their contributions and identify underlying causes for observed changes in mechanical properties. This thesis finds that mechanical properties in the quasi-static and fatigue framework do not see appreciable declines until specimen thickness is under 0.75 mm in thickness. The added Hot Isostatic Pressing heat treatment effectively closed pores, recrystallized the grain structure, and provided a more homogenous microstructure that benefits the modulus, tensile strength, elongation, and fatigue performance at higher stresses. Stress heterogeneities, primarily caused by surface defects, negatively affected the thinner specimens disproportionately. Without the use of the Hot Isostatic Pressing, the grain structure remained much more refined and benefitted the yield strength and fatigue endurance limit.

Tire blowout often occurs during driving, which can suddenly disturb vehicle motions and seriously threaten road safety. Currently, there is still a lack of effective methods to mitigate tire blowout risks in everyday traffic, even for automated vehicles. To fundamentally study and systematically resolve the tire blowout issue for automated vehicles, a collaborative project between General Motors (GM) and Arizona State University (ASU) has been conducted since 2018. In this dissertation, three main contributions of this project will be presented. First, to explore vehicle dynamics with tire blowout impacts and establish an effective simulation platform for close-loop control performance evaluation, high-fidelity tire blowout models are thoroughly developed by explicitly considering important vehicle parameters and variables. Second, since human cooperation is required to control Level 2/3 partially automated vehicles (PAVs), novel shared steering control schemes are specifically proposed for tire blowout to ensure safe vehicle stabilization via cooperative driving. Third, for Level 4/5 highly automated vehicles (HAVs) without human control, the development of control-oriented vehicle models, controllability study, and automatic control designs are performed based on impulsive differential systems (IDS) theories. Co-simulations Matlab/Simulink® and CarSim® are conducted to validate performances of all models and control designs proposed in this dissertation. Moreover, a scaled test vehicle at ASU and a full-size test vehicle at GM are well instrumented for data collection and control implementation. Various tire blowout experiments for different scenarios are conducted for more rigorous validations. Consequently, the proposed high-fidelity tire blowout models can correctly and more accurately describe vehicle motions upon tire blowout. The developed shared steering control schemes for PAVs and automatic control designs for HAVs can effectively stabilize a vehicle to maintain path following performance in the driving lane after tire blowout. In addition to new research findings and developments in this dissertation, a pending patent for tire blowout detection is also generated in the tire blowout project. The obtained research results have attracted interest from automotive manufacturers and could have a significant impact on driving safety enhancement for automated vehicles upon tire blowout.

For the past two centuries, coal has played a vital role as the primary carbon source, fueling industries and enabling the production of essential carbon-rich materials, including carbon nanotubes, graphite, and diamond. However, the global transition towards sustainable energy production has resulted in a decline in coal usage for energy purposes, with the United States alone witnessing a substantial 50% reduction over the past decade. This shift aligns with the UN’s 2030 sustainability goals, which emphasize the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the promotion of cleaner energy sources. Despite the decreased use in energy production, the abundance of coal has sparked interest in exploring its potential for other sustainable and valuable applications.In this context, Direct Ink Writing (DIW) has emerged as a promising additive manufacturing technique that employs liquid or gel-like resins to construct three-dimensional structures. DIW offers a unique advantage by allowing the incorporation of particulate reinforcements, which enhance the properties and functionalities of the materials. This study focuses on evaluating the viability of coal as a sustainable and cost-effective substitute for other carbon-based reinforcements, such as graphite or carbon nanotubes. The research utilizes a thermosetting resin based on phenol-formaldehyde (commercially known as Bakelite) as the matrix, while pulverized coal (250 µm) and carbon black (CB) function as the reinforcements. The DIW ink is meticulously formulated to exhibit shear-thinning behavior, facilitating uniform and continuous printing of structures. Mechanical property testing of the printed structures was conducted following ASTM standards. Interestingly, the study reveals that incorporating a 2 wt% concentration of coal in the resin yields the most significant improvements in tensile modulus and flexural strength, with enhancements of 35% and 12.5% respectively. These findings underscore the promising potential of coal as a sustainable and environmentally friendly reinforcement material in additive manufacturing applications. By harnessing the unique properties of coal, this research opens new avenues for its utilization in the pursuit of greener and more efficient manufacturing processes.

Animals have always been a source of inspiration for real-life problems. The octopus is one such animal that has a lot of untapped potential. The octopus’s arm is without solid joints or bone structure and despite this it can achieve many complicated movements with virtually infinite degrees of freedom. This ability is made possible through the unique morphology of the arm. The octopus’s arm is divided into transverse, longitudinal, oblique, and circular muscle groups and each one has a unique muscle fiber orientation. The octopus’s arm is classified as a hydrostat because it maintains a constant volume while contracting with the help of its different muscle groups. These muscle groups allow elongation, shortening, bending, and twisting of the arm when they work in combination with each other. To confirm the role of transverse and longitudinal muscle groups, an electromyography (EMG) recording of these muscle groups was performed while an amputated arm of an Octopus bimaculoides was stimulated with an electrical signal to induce movement. Statistical analysis was performed on these results to confirm the roles of each muscle group quantitatively. Octopus arm morphology was previously assumed to be uniform along the arm. Through a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study at the proximal, middle, and distal sections of the arm this notion was disproven, and a new pattern was discovered. Drawing inspiration from this finding and previous octopus arm prototypes, 4 bio-inspired designs were conceived and tested in finite element analysis (FEA) simulations. Four tests in elongation, shortening, bending, and transverse-assisted bending movements were performed on all designs to compare each design’s performance. The findings in this study have applications in engineering and soft robotics fields for use cases such as, handling fragile objects, minimally invasive surgeries, difficult-to-access areas that require squeezing through small holes, and other novel cases.

Fatigue fracture is one of the most common types of mechanical failures seen in structures. Considering that fatigue failures usually initiate on surfaces, it is accepted that surface roughness has a detrimental effect on the fatigue life of components. Irregularities on the surface cause stress concentrations and form nucleation sites for cracks. As surface conditions are not always satisfactory, particularly for additively manufactured components, it is necessary to develop a reliable model for fatigue life estimation considering surface roughness effects and assure structural integrity. This research study focuses on extending a previously developed subcycle fatigue crack growth model to include the effects of surface roughness. Unlike other models that consider surface irregularities as series of cracks, the proposed model is unique in the way that it treats the peaks and valleys of surface texture as a single equivalent notch. First, an equivalent stress concentration factor for the roughness was estimated and introduced into an asymptotic interpolation method for notches. Later, a concept called equivalent initial flaw size was incorporated along with linear elastic fracture mechanics to predict the fatigue life of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with different levels of roughness under uniaxial and multiaxial loading conditions. The predicted results were validated using the available literature data. The developed model can also handle variable amplitude loading conditions, which is suggested for future work.

Intelligent engineering designs require an accurate understanding of material behavior, since any uncertainties or gaps in knowledge must be counterbalanced with heightened factors of safety, leading to overdesign. Therefore, building better structures and pushing the performance of new components requires an improved understanding of the thermomechanical response of advanced materials under service conditions. This dissertation provides fundamental investigations of several advanced materials: thermoset polymers, a common matrix material for fiber-reinforced composites and nanocomposites; aluminum alloy 7075-T6 (AA7075-T6), a high-performance aerospace material; and ceramic matrix composites (CMCs), an advanced composite for extreme-temperature applications. To understand matrix interactions with various interfaces and nanoinclusions at their fundamental scale, the properties of thermoset polymers are studied at the atomistic scale. An improved proximity-based molecular dynamics (MD) technique for modeling the crosslinking of thermoset polymers is carefully established, enabling realistic curing simulations through its ability to dynamically and probabilistically perform complex topology transformations. The proximity-based MD curing methodology is then used to explore damage initiation and the local anisotropic evolution of mechanical properties in thermoset polymers under uniaxial tension with an emphasis on changes in stiffness through a series of tensile loading, unloading, and reloading experiments. Aluminum alloys in aerospace applications often require a fatigue life of over 109 cycles, which is well over the number of cycles that can be practically tested using conventional fatigue testing equipment. In order to study these high-life regimes, a detailed ultrasonic cycle fatigue study is presented for AA7075-T6 under fully reversed tension-compression loading. The geometric sensitivity, frequency effects, size effects, surface roughness effects, and the corresponding failure mechanisms for ultrasonic fatigue across different fatigue regimes are investigated. Finally, because CMCs are utilized in extreme environments, oxidation plays an important role in their degradation. A multiphysics modeling methodology is thus developed to address the complex coupling between oxidation, mechanical stress, and oxygen diffusion in heterogeneous carbon fiber-reinforced CMC microstructures.

Magnetic liquids called ferrofluids have been used in applications ranging from audio speaker cooling and rotary pressure seals to retinal detachment surgery and implantable artificial glaucoma valves. Recently, ferrofluids have been investigated as a material for use in magnetically controllable liquid droplet robotics. Liquid droplet robotics is an emerging technology that aims to apply control theory to manipulate fluid droplets as robotic agents to perform a wide range of tasks. Furthermore, magnetically controlled micro-robotics is another popular area of study where manipulating a magnetic field allows for the control of magnetized micro-robots. Both of these emerging fields have potential for impact toward medical applications: liquid characteristics such as being able to dissolve various compounds, be injected via a needle, and the potential for the human body to automatically filter and remove a liquid droplet robot, make liquid droplet robots advantageous for medical applications; while the ability to remotely control the torques and forces on an untethered microrobot via modulating the magnetic field and gradient is also highly advantageous. The research described in this dissertation explores applications and methods for the electromagnetic control of ferrofluid droplet robots. First, basic electrical components built from fluidic channels containing ferrofluid are made remotely tunable via the placement of ferrofluid within the channel. Second, a ferrofluid droplet is shown to be fully controllable in position, stretch direction, and stretch length in two dimensions using proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controllers. Third, control of a ferrofluid’s position, stretch direction, and stretch length is extended to three dimensions, and control gains are optimized via a Bayesian optimization process to achieve higher accuracy. Finally, magnetic control of both single and multiple ferrofluid droplets in two dimensions is investigated via a visual model predictive control approach based on machine learning. These achievements take both liquid droplet robotics and magnetic micro-robotics fields several steps closer toward real-world medical applications such as embedded soft electronic health monitors, liquid-droplet-robot-based drug delivery, and automated magnetically actuated surgeries.
