The digital education market has been expanding rapidly during the last few years, providing ample opportunity in the future. There are many technologies involved in this market, with the most significant being cloud client services, edge computing, and interactive flat panel displays (IFPDs). Combined, these technologies represent ninety-two percent of the Serviceable Available Market with IFPDs as the largest opportunity with sixty-nine percent (Company X Data). Cloud computing provides anytime/anywhere services that can be accessed from any device: e-portfolios, content access, and creation. Edge computing processes data closer to its source and the point of service delivery, providing ultra-low latency to help boost efficiency, mainly used for data processing. Lastly, IFPDs are touchscreen display devices ideal for collaborative spaces and meeting rooms. They are a substitute for outdated projector technology and provide better connectivity and built-in software solutions. <br/>We decided to develop a strategy to expand the market share in the IFPD market because it is the largest, and we consider Company X has a significant advantage in this sector. Company X manufactures the processors used in IFPDs and has established good relationships with manufacturers of these devices.

This study explores the impact of feedback and feedforward and personality on computer-mediated behavior change. The impact of the effects were studied using subjects who entered information relevant to their diet and exercise into an online tool. Subjects were divided into four experimental groups: those receiving only feedback, those receiving only feedforward, those receiving both, and those receiving none. Results were analyzed using regression analysis. Results indicate that both feedforward and feedback impact behavior change and that individuals with individuals ranking low in conscientiousness experienced behavior change equivalent to that of individuals with high conscientiousness in the presence of feedforward and/or feedback.

Dietary counseling from a registered dietitian has been shown in previous studies to aid in weight loss for those receiving counseling. With the increasing use of smartphone diet/weight loss applications (app), this study sought to investigate if an iPhone diet app providing feedback from a registered dietitian improved weight loss and bio-markers of health. Twenty-four healthy adults who owned iPhones (BMI > 24 kg/m2) completed this trial. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three app groups: the MyDietitian app with daily feedback from a registered dietitian (n=7), the MyDietitian app without feedback (n=7), and the MyPlate feedback control app (n=10). Participants used their respective diet apps daily for 8-weeks while their weight loss, adherence to self-monitoring, blood bio-markers of health, and physical activity were monitored. All of the groups had a significant reduction in waist and hip circumference (p<0.001), a reduction in A1c (p=0.002), an increase in HDL cholesterol levels (p=0.012), and a reduction in calories consumed (p=0.022) over the duration of the trial. Adherence to diet monitoring via the apps did not differ between groups during the study. Body weight did not change during the study for any groups. However, when the participants were divided into low (<50% of days) or high adherence (>50% of days) groups, irrespective of study group, the high adherence group had a significant reduction in weight when compared to the low adherence group (p=0.046). These data suggest that diet apps may be useful tools for self-monitoring and even weight loss, but that the value appears to be the self-monitoring process and not the app specifically.

YAP/TAZ is the key effector in the Hippo pathway, but it is also involved in many other regulatory pathways to control tissue and organ size. To better understand its regulation and effects in tumorigenesis and degeneration, a preliminary feedback network was created with the species YAP/TAZ, phosphorylated YAP/TAZ, LATS, miR-130a, VGLL4, and β-catenin. From this network a set of ordinary differential equations were written and analyzed for parameter effects. A model showing the healthy, tumorigenic, and degenerative states was created and preliminary parameter analysis identified the effects of parameter modifications on the overall levels of YAP/TAZ. Further analysis is required and connections with the underlying biology should continue to be pursued to better understand how parameter modifications could improve disease treatments.

This paper outlines a responsible innovation framework to evaluate technologies designed for education. Traditionally, technologies being implemented for development of education come from foreign nations with less cultural understanding of the needs of the country they are trying to serve. This framework outlines categories that impact the success or failure of an educational technology. The framework is explained and then applied to the SolarSPELL case; an offline digital library designed to bring information to resource constrained areas around the world. The purpose of this research is to explore the factors determining success and failure of educational technology projects and design a framework that can be used moving forward to assess projects prior to the final implementation stage to encourage more successful projects. The framework designed in this research proved useful for evaluating educational technology designed for resource constrained areas.

This thesis details the process of developing a force feedback system for a small robotic manipulator in order to prevent damage to manipulators and the objects they are grasping, which is a desired feature in many autonomous robots. This includes the research, design, fabrication, and testing of a custom force-sensing resistor and a custom set of jaws to implement the feedback system on. In order to complete this project, extensive research went to designing and building test beds for the commercial and custom force sensors to determine if force values could even be obtained. Then the sensors were implemented on a manipulator and were evaluated for ease of use during assembly and testing, accuracy, and repeatability of results using a test bed designed during the course of this research. Afterwards the custom jaws were designed and fabricated based on problems encountered during testing with the initial set of jaws. The new jaws were then tested on the test bed with the sensors and the force feedback system was implemented on it. The overall system was then evaluated for any current limitations and improvements that could be made in the future to further develop this research and assist with its implementation on other robots. The results of this experiment show that a low-cost force sensor that is easy to mass produce can be implemented on an autonomous robot to add force feedback capabilities to it. It is hopeful that the results from the experiments conducted are implemented on robotic manipulators so the area of force sensing technologies research can be expanded upon and improved.

This study examined perception of K12 schooling systems as experienced by a randomsample of adults in Phoenix, AZ. It explored whether the values purported as key factors in the American K12 schooling system - as presented in academic literature - were compatible with the lives, interests and goals of ‘users’, student-participants.

This study examined perception of K12 schooling systems as experienced by a randomsample of adults in Phoenix, AZ. It explored whether the values purported as key factors in the American K12 schooling system - as presented in academic literature - were compatible with the lives, interests and goals of ‘users’, student-participants. In addition, it offered opportunity for post-K12 student-participants to share their views on the purposes, goals, and outcomes they held to be important. The sample consisted of 139 post-K12 stu- dents/individuals residing in Phoenix, AZ. Mean age of student-participants was 29. Results indicated a mismatch between purported K12 schooling goals and important outcomes embedded in the system and values held by the K12 student-participants. The participants in this research generally perceived K12 schooling as valuable, both to themselves and to society at large, but stressed that the deficiencies they perceived in the system were particular to delivery platforms as they relate to the learning styles of students and belonging. Future life skills and success - in and after K12 schooling - whether related to college or not were also of importance. Results revealed that the initial hypothesis of income, age, and ethnicity as key factors in satisfaction with K12 schooling was not borne-out. Rather it revealed that a sense of belonging and the suitability of learning platforms to the individual learning styles of students were of greatest significance.

Students in academic environments receive near-constant feedback about both their own abilities as well as the performance of their peers which could significantly alter their cognitive and learning outcomes. This research investigates whether this social feedback concerning peer ability would improve students’ cognitive performance as measured by a visual working memory (VWM) task. Specifically, the present study provides either positive or negative feedback by means of peers’ performance to test for changes in the quality (memory precision) and the memorability (memory failure rate) of visual working memory representations. The effect of feedback on individual confidence was also examined, as feedback might impact subjective confidence instead of object task performance. Memory precision, participant guess rate, and confidence were compared across both halves of the experiment to determine potential time differences. Participants (N=105) were each administered a 300-trial Delayed Estimation Task to assess visual working memory ability. Participants were asked to rate their confidence in their task response after each trial and were all informed of their own response accuracy after every block of 30 trials. Along with personal feedback after each block, individuals were randomly assigned to view feedback ranking their performance as more or less accurate than other students. Results indicate a nonsignificant effect of peer feedback type on individual memory precision, guess rate, and confidence, which ran contrary to experimental hypotheses. These trends could have occurred due to the presence of participant-based moderating factors that could impact how certain individuals respond to feedback. Additionally, significant increases in both the precision of participants’ memory representations and the rate at which they guessed on the Delayed Estimation Task were observed across time. Together, these findings highlight the need for further research on the nuanced effects of social feedback on neural processing in order to improve student cognition over time.

This dissertation study investigated how L2 doctoral students regulate their emotions upon receiving written feedback from their mentors. The study took a multiple-case-study approach that entailed stimulated recall of the feedback-reading and revision process. Three international doctoral students who were engaged in high-stakes writing in the third and fourth years of their doctoral program participated in the study. The data from the stimulated-recall and interview talks were analyzed and coded for emotion-regulation strategies and how they were used in the participants’ revision process. The results show that the participants, while processing feedback, experienced a variety of emotions—both positive and negative—that stemmed from the challenges of working in an academic setting, life as a scholar, and social relationships. They also regulated their emotional reactions by suppressing immediate emotional responses or by reappraising their thoughts to proactively reduce the emotional impact. The results also show that one of the key functions of emotion regulations in the writing process may be to prevent writer’s block. These findings, unlike previous studies, provide an understanding of how individual variations of emotion regulation strategies are exercised and how regulation impacts the process of writing in a naturalistic context. In addition, the findings suggest the need for future studies to identify the necessity and efficiency of emotion regulation strategies within the L2 writing context and establish an inventory of emotion regulation strategies that allow researchers, teachers, and writers to recognize ways to sustain an effective writing process.

This dissertation studies the differences in how men and women react to feedback or information about their performance in educational settings and how these differences might impact women’s decisions to stay away from traditionally male-dominated fields. The first chapter analyzes the gender differences in reaction to low performance during high school. I focus on the decision of North Carolina public high school students to enroll in advanced math or English classes after learning about their performance on statewide standardized tests in each subject. I find that women are more responsive to low-performing than men. Women that perform poorly on their tests are less likely than their higher-performance peers to enroll in advanced classes, while men's likelihood is the same regardless of performance. It has been documented that the probability of women continuing their studies in male-dominated fields -- like Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and business -- is more sensitive to their performance in relevant courses at the beginning of college relative to men. The second chapter studies these gender differences in grade sensitivity during college. Using novel survey data, I estimate students' sensitivity to grades and find that women value an extra grade point average (GPA) unit more than men. I find that anticipated discrimination in the labor market of male-dominated fields is important to understand this gender gap in grade sensitivity. I further provide evidence of the gender differences in beliefs about labor market discrimination in different fields. The last chapter investigates the dynamic effects of feedback in an experimental setting. I explore how individuals update their beliefs and choices in response to good or bad news over time in two domains: verbal skills and math. I find significant gender gaps in beliefs and choices before feedback: men are more optimistic about their performance and more willing to compete than women in both domains, but the gaps are significantly larger in math. Feedback significantly shifts individuals' beliefs and choices immediately after receiving it. However, there is substantial persistence of gender gaps over time. This is particularly true among the set of individuals who receive negative feedback.
