On Nov. 18, 2014, the Arizona State University announced its club hockey team would be elevated from club to varsity status begin in 2015-16. ASU's process lasted merely four months, spring-boarding off a July article that quoted athletic director Ray Anderson as saying all the program needed was money in order to make happen. This thesis explains what happened between that July story and the November announcement. Almost immediately the school received calls from interested donors who said they were willing to completely fund the creation of a men's hockey program. In the end, a group led by Milwaukee businessman Don Mullett donated $32 million to ASU. The thesis also explains the challenges that are still to come for ASU. Those include the arena in which ASU will play, the conference it will join, the women's sport ASU will add in order to stay compliant with Title IX and whether the program will be profitable for the University, among other things. ASU will begin play as a Division I program, the southernmost and westernmost school in the continental United States. It truly is, as Anderson wanted, an example of ASU being "entrepreneurial."

My thesis project, "Reforming the NCAA: How the governing body of intercollegiate athletics should handle student-athletes into the future," sets out to create a working blueprint for how the NCAA should handle the relationship between student-athletes, universities, and the NCAA from this point forward. The NCAA has come under fire in the past 10 years for its failure to meet modern social constructs and provide student-athletes with the resources necessary to achieving a successful educational and athletic experience, and through my thesis, I formulated reforms the NCAA can adopt and enact to respond to the growing issues within intercollegiate athletics. I began the process last spring with my thesis director as we selected a topic together, and I researched a variety of topics relating to current NCAA issues throughout the summer and fall. In the fall, I outlined sources I hoped to interview, and I conducted interviews over winter break. I spent the first two months of 2015 writing and refining my thesis, and through March, I created a PowerPoint presentation I used to defend my thesis project. During the process, I met with my thesis director at critical junctures to discuss the direction of the project and to determine how to find a delicate balance between creating attainable goals for reform and overstepping my boundaries. After a successful thesis defense, I made small revisions to the thesis and had my project re-approved by my director and second reader. In the coming weeks after submitting my thesis, I plan on exploring the possibility of having my thesis published and received critiques from those in the industry who follow collegiate athletics closely.

The ASU Men's Gymnastics Team has had a rich tradition rooted in success for over 60 years. Since being dropped from the NCAA in 1993, this team has fought to regain NCAA status as well as continue the tradition of men's gymnastics at Arizona State. Despite the adversity that the sport of collegiate men's gymnastics has faced in terms of a nationwide loss of funding, the ASU team continued to grow over the past three years and serve as an example to struggling college programs looking to combat a loss of funding and scholarships. Marketing plays an instrumental role in the journey towards re-instatement into the NCAA. Through digital marketing, direct marketing, business partnerships and detailed market segmentation, this organization has made strides towards achieving its goal of re-gaining Division 1 status as an organization. Evidence of continued growth of fundraising has allowed the team to attract recruits as well as gain more exposure as a team through competing at higher profile competitions both in the United States and abroad. Fundraising success paired with a restructured social media strategy and approach has translated to increased support and exposure for this program. From a digital perspective, the program has stayed ahead of the curve in terms of digital marketing strategy relating to video production, website design and crowd funding. Partnerships with businesses and gymnastics support organizations have furthered the ASU Men's Gymnastics teams mission and goals. These partnerships have stimulated our relationship with our community as well as provided us with countless funds and opportunities to continue to grow as a program.

The purpose of this paper is to raise awareness about the problem nonrevenue sports face today by analyzing the key factors of the failing Division 1 model and providing some unforeseen consequences in the elimination of nonrevenue sports. The first section will explore the elimination and financial trends of NCAA Division 1 in a historical and contemporary context. The second section will provide the deep-rooted problems associated with collegiate sports. Lastly, the third section will analyze unforeseen consequences for athletic departments that should be accounted for when contemplating the elimination of a nonrevenue program.

While universities cannot directly pay student-athletes, student-athletes can now make money based off their name, image, and likeness

Until the Supreme Court’s landmark decision in National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) vs. Alston, student-athletes were not allowed to be compensated for the millions of dollars in revenue they generate for universities. While universities cannot directly pay student-athletes, student-athletes can now make money based off their name, image, and likeness (NIL). NIL legislation has the potential (and has begun to) change college recruiting with the transfer portal and free agency landscape. Now, schools can bake NIL connections into their recruiting pitch, creating a recruiting renaissance. This research is an empirical study to determine the factors that contribute to an athlete’s NIL valuation and earnings. A hierarchical mixed-model analysis run in SAS also is used to analyze the data. The significance of this study includes providing schools and athletes with vital information pertaining to their fiscal valuation during the recruiting process. The findings can help families and student athletes to better estimate expected NIL earnings.

This project investigates the adjustment to college life that first-year athletes must face. Through personal essay, a comprehensive survey of current college athletes at Arizona State University, and one-on-one interviews with self-selected, current athletes, the project presents the collection of challenges confronted and best practices adopted (and also missteps to be learned from) along the way in a college athlete’s first year and transition from high school to college. By looking systematically, this project brings awareness to the common stressors that athletes face and shares coping mechanisms in which these stressors can be overcome. This project also brings the survey statistics to life with individual stories, including both the author’s personal essay and interviews with individual athletes. While the first purpose of this thesis is to make clear to athletes struggling with this transition from high school to college sports that their experience is commonplace and expected, the second purpose is to set these athletes up for success: providing them with a one-stop shop of resources to assist athletes and any of their needs. The project analyzes athletes’ current use of resources and brings together the available resources for athletes into a single catalogue. This “guidebook” blends previous research on the adjustment to college for collegiate athletes, a new study analyzing the specific resource usage of the current Sun Devil athletes, and personal testimony. What this project revealed was that not only are first-year athletes experiencing common stressors and underutilizing resources available to them, so too are athletes in the second, third, and fourth years. All athletes would benefit from increasing awareness of the challenges and stressors often experienced by athletes and increased accessing of resources available to athletes that continue to be underutilized.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to map the process by which Division I sports are added at universities and to create a blueprint for any passionate and driven individual who would like to see their sport of choice added at any college.

Methods: Information for this study was gathered through qualitative interviews with sports administrators at eleven of the twelve universities in the PAC-12 conference. This primary research was supplemented with secondary research of media sources and
PAC-12 and NCAA documents.

Results: Four key factors are involved in adding a new Division I sports program at any university. These factors are: funding, Title IX status, conference and sport status, and administrative mindset.

Conclusion: The four factors stated above are critical in the addition of any new sports program, though there will be significant variations from sport to sport and from university to university. In the case of men’s wrestling at USC, the group of advocates needs to demonstrate the significant value adding wrestling will bring to the athletic department and school. They should also follow this up with a clear plan of how they will navigate the funding, Title IX requirements and conference status.

In recent events, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) has been under fire for not creating a way for student-athletes to make money. However, after pressure from legislatures in multiple states, the NCAA decided to adopt a solution for collegiate athletes to receive compensation. Taking effect in January 2021, student-athletes will be able to obtain monetary awards. However, the NCAA has yet to release concrete rules regarding how student-athletes will receive compensation. By analyzing the history, economics, current structure, and various interviews with collegiate athletes, a pragmatic solution is extrapolated. College sports is the only place in the United States that does not allow individuals to make money off their market-driven talents, often leading to students leaving college before graduation. However, a solution exists for student-athletes to justly receive compensation without negatively affecting their sport, school, and graduation. This thesis seeks to deliver a logical solution to this situation.
